OS X Mavericks :: How To View Hidden Folders In Finder

Jun 29, 2014

Sometimes, it's not just folders, it's files too. Sometimes in non-mac sources, like my SMART TV, I see files named .filename.mp4 along with filename.mp4. And these fraudulent files are really bothering. And the worst part, I can't see them in Finder. remove the .file.mp4.

I used the term 'filename.mp4' to represent an MP4 video file. But the files that have a . before them need to be deleted.

OS X :: Rant Over Hidden Files And Folders

Mar 8, 2009

Namely: Library and its contents. If Windows can do it, I'm confident Leopard 10.5.6 can too. None of the myriad permutations of the below Terminal command work.

Code:
# defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool TRUE
# KillAll Finder
When I "search this Mac" in the Finder or querry Spotlight, I want nothing but nothing excluded from results. I am not a computer retard in danger of ruining my OS through hasty file relocation or deletion. I want my search returns to include even the most sensitive system files which, if accidentally deleted, would cause my Mac Pro to reach out through my monitor and stab me in the face.

Folder example: There are several folders called "Mozilla" on my system, and yours if you use Firefox. Good luck finding a folder called "Mozilla" using the Finder or Spotlight. You'll have to know where it is and manually navigate there.

File example: I have a file called userChrome.css buried in users/me/Library/AS/Mozilla/ext/yadaYoda, But when I search for "userChrome.css" - Mac OS peers out at me through it's glowing red eye and says, very calmly, "What are you doing Dave? I can't let you do that Dave."

Can anyone tell me how to really & truly include ALL files and folders in searches? I'll reiterate that I've tried a dozen terminal commands I found online.

OS X Mountain Lion :: Can't Hide Folders And Files That Are Usually Hidden

Sep 8, 2014

This past weekend I transferred my OS and apps to a newly installed SSD drive.

During the process I had to move some files around in order to get The OS and Apps on the SSD.

I used a technique that utilizes the Terminal and the chflags command.

My issue is now I can not hide the files and folders that are usually hidden.

I can't remember the exact method I used to unhide hidden folders and files. I can't even find a reference to it in my web browsers history.I have searched on the web for solutions along these lines: defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -boolean FALSE ; killall Finderchflags hidden sudo chflags hidden

But none of these approaches have worked. I have downloaded Onyx, TinkerTool and Show Hide Invisible Files.

I have used them as best I understand to hide the normally hidden files and folders, but nothing has worked.

OS X :: How Do You Delete Hidden Files On A System

Jan 7, 2011

Might seem like a stupid question, but I have an SD card with hidden files filling it up to capacity. I want to delete these but I can't. I can see them, but when I hit delete it makes that noise that says you cant do this, and I cannot drag to the bin either.

MacBook Pro :: How To Delete Hidden Partitions

Nov 14, 2009

Wut up Mac Peeps, pretty advanced Mac user and I just can't figure out how to delete the hidden partitions that Windows 7 creates. I've installed Windows 7 twice on this HDD with Leopard v.10.5.8 on it and now I have 2 small partitions at 200MB each. This means 4 partitions (1 for Leopard, 1 for Windows 7, and 2 hidden partitions). They don't show up in Disk Utility and I tried removing the entire BootCamp partition, then re-installing Leopard just so that I could configure the HDD to "One Single Partition" with Disk Utility on the Leopard Disc while re-installing and THAT didn't work for the hidden partitions either...couldn't believe it...

I'm hoping I don't have to use a Windows DOS Boot Disc to format or something...not sure if they work on MBPs but I would try...I could also use Seagate HDD Tools but I'm trying to keep this simple.

ICloud :: Cannot Delete Folders/sub-folders In It

Jul 2, 2012

I imported a large store of outlook email messages into iCloud mail - including many folders and subfolders some time ago.  I would now like to delete the lot of them. Deleting a single message or folder works fine.  However, when I try to delete a folder with subfolders, even though I reply to the 'are you sure' message by clicking "yes," the folder and subfolders initially disappear yet, immediately upon refresh, all folders and subfolders reappear and I find that the instruction has been completely ignored.

OS X :: To Make Folders Go To The Top In List View?

I've read many times people want to make folders appear at the top of a list in Finder like they are represented in Windows explorer. I found an article on Macworld that tells you how to do this.

I remember doing this over a year ago on my G4 Powerbook and it working. But on my Intel MacBook Pro, I can't locate the file they are referring to in the article. where this file was moved to or how to access this thing on the Intel machines?

Remember, to reset the setting to its default value, just change the "1" at the end to a "0" (or vice versa). Enable "X-Raying" Folders with QuickLook This one is pretty cool. It lets you show the contents of folders when QuickLooking them.

OS X :: How To Sort Folders At Top Of File View In Finder

Jul 30, 2009

I'm a recent switcher, and of course would never voluntarily go back to a PC. Love everything about the Mac for the most part.

One thing that has bugged me: In Windows File Explorer, when browsing files, all the folders are at the top (in alpha order), then the files are sorted below that in alpha order.

In Finder, the folders are mixed in so everything is alpha all together.

I would prefer seeing all my folders at the top.

Is there a setting that controls this?

I have not ever seen this before nor have I installed any software I haven't ever used before that did not do this.

This also shows in Columns View and the Lower Pane of Cover Flow.

... so lost ...

Get Info shows a preview of a normal folder, as does icon view.

OS X :: View All Folders/files With File Open Dialog In Any Application?

Mar 13, 2009

I have setup up Finder to view all folders/files. I know how to become root from Terminal using (su) and navigate to all folders and do things.

The problem I can't figure out is when I use Mac apps (such as TextEdit) to open a file in one of the hidden folders (such as /private/etc/apache,) I dont see them in the dialog even though I am logged in as root and have enabled the Finder to show all files.

Is there a way to view all the folders from these dialog boxes? I dont want to use vim or pico for editing.

OS X :: How To View Pic And Delete Unwanted Pic In Folder

Sep 24, 2010

When we download new pictures in Windows and saved in a folder, we simply view it using Window Picture Viewer, scroll along and delete pictures we don't want. Easy and straight forward.

I did the same saving all new pictures in a folder. Then problem arrises:

1) When click the 1st picture to commence viewing, its not able to scroll to the next one. unlike Picture Viewer. So does it mean I have to open up individual pic, close, move cursor to next pic, open, delete unwanted pic, close, move cursor to next ....repeat....repeat.....one by one at a time. That is mind bogging absurd.

2) Then I use space bar and able to scroll forward. When reach the last pic of the row. it stop, Then I have to move cursor down and now scroll backwards. Seems very strange. Its kind of zig-zag manner. And after deleting pic, I have to start all over again instead of continuing from last pic. Again this is crazy.

I haven't really explore iphoto yet but don't tell me to use iphoto to do the job. That means I have to import photos from folder to iphoto and that is double job. Not forgetting there is no "cut and paste" function at right click mouse and that also means duplication.

Surely Mac is meant for graphics and there must be a much easier way than Window Picture Viewer, right?

I put in my password, it accepts the password. However, the folders and files on my ipod are not deleted after asking for my password.
