OS X :: How To Stream Music To Another PC / (almost) Free Airtunes
Feb 8, 2009
So You like the Idea of being able to stream your music over wifi? but you don't want to pay 100$ for a aiport base station? and you have some "old" pc/macs sitting around?
I found the ultimate solution for you!
I tried to stream my music (use my old laptops as a wifi speaker station) for some time now, and I recently found Airfoil [URL] and it works GREAT!!! it even includes a video player which automaticly syncs the sound to the video(VERY usefull)
you only need The application, and another pc/mac, its really easy to set up, and you can not only stream iTunes music, but also any other sound on your mac!! I use it everyday, and I just wanted to share that, because i did not find any other solution!

I have step up Airtunes (Express) and it works fine from computers on the LAN connected via ethernet, but the one PC it doesnt work well on is in the kitchen (wireless with a 90% connection N). The express obviosly has a good connection otherwise it wouldnt work on the other PCs. It seems that the way iTunes works is that if you play music from a shared location (we have a music server) it doesnt stream the music direct from the source to the express, the music travels via the PC with which is controlling the music (which is a bit silly?) Due to this, the Kitchen PC doesnt work well, but if when clicked play, the music went straight from the source to the express it would work fine

iMac -> Amp -> Speakers
I get annoyed by computer noises ruining my music experience now and then. So I thought "perfect idea, I'll use airtunes for my main speakers" (I have an AirPort Ex under me desk). That way, tunes come out the speakers, other noises come out of the iMac. Except when I want to watch a Movie...

I have an iMac connected to speakers.. and then I have my Macbook. Im looking for a way to play music from iTunes or Pandora on my Macbook... and listen through the speakers connected to my iMac while I am roaming about the house with my Macbook. Is there any way to do this other than Airtunes, or using screen sharing? (Right now im just using screen sharing and controlling the iMac)

I have a Snow Leopard and Windows 7 partition. On my Windows 7 partition, I'd like to be able to stream music that I have stored on the OSX one. Is there any way to do this? I'm able to access the files using programs like HFXExplorer, and I'm able to copy music to the Windows partition when I'm on the OSX one, but when I try accessing the OSX partition from the Windows 7 partition, I'm met with empty folders.
Copying all the music is out of the question as there is a great deal of it, for which I just don't have the space for doubles. Is there anyway to simply stream the music from the OSX partition in a music client; winamp specifically?

I have an existing Airport Extreme wireless network. I would like to connect an Airport Express to stream music through the house. Based, on the information that I have read in this forum, I just have to plug the Airport Express into an outlet near my receiver and then I have to run an audio in cable from the airport express to the receiver. That seems simple enough, but I am so confused when I look at the back of my receiver that I don't know where to plug the audio cable into.

I had selected a whole bunch of music from my iTunes to sync onto my iPhone using my USB cable. Now I've signed up for iTunes Match and none of that music is on my iPhone anymore except by streaming. How do I get those tunes and podcasts back on my iPhone so I can listen to them when streaming is not available (like downstairs in my gym where there's no signal) WHILE ALSO being able to access the other non-sync'd tunes if I want whenever I've got a good signal. I spent some time choosing which tunes to keep on my iPhone and which not to sync.

iPhone 4, iOS 5.1

I have an Airport Express 802.11N with latest software (7.4.1). It has stopped connecting for AirTunes. In the Airport Utility (from a PowerBook G4) the music icon has a cancel ("O" with "") superimposed. The Airport Utility from an Intel-based MacPro or MacBook Pro shows the icon properly. In all cases the Enable AirTunes block is checked. iTunes shows the Airport Express in the list but will not play through it. It has worked before.

but how do I buy DRM-free music on iTunes? Do I have to upgrade my current library to DRM-free before I can buy a DRM-free song? Is there a way of telling if a song is DRM-free, such as a icon in the corner? Because for the life of me, I can't seem to find any DRM-free songs, and I have iTunes 802...

I am trying to edit a project for class in Final cut pro and like and idiot thought I was going to use my itunes library (relax, I know if I showed it in public, I would be screwed for using copy written music), but I wanted to know if iTunes is ever going to get rid of that format, considering it seems like other services have done away with it as a marketing edge.

I was sick for a couple of months and came back on here, and now my regional settings seem to no longer give me free Spanish music. Does anyone know why that is? Most of the stuff I buy comes from the musicians I'm introduced to through the free music.

I have a lot of music on my macbook and want to download more. I just bought a 520 GB hard drive. How would you recommend storing this music so that it would be easily accessible from the external and backed up yet cleared from my computer? there has to be an easier way than what I had with my pc......(everytime I wanted to hear a song from my external or put one on a cd I had to go through all these folders - transfer the song from the external to the computer and wait)

I am planning on purchasing a mac mini solely for the purpose of playing music - it will be hooked up to a hi-fi amplifier and speakers. All of the music that will be on the computer will be in lossless format, which is very large. I will need a lot (320+ GB?) of storage.
I'm wondering if I can cut costs by buying an old 80 GB mini and augmenting its hard drive with a time capsule. I was planning on buying a time capsule anyway, so I could save something like $300. My questions are: would I be able to stream music from the time capsule to the mac mini? Would I be able to import music from itunes directly onto the time capsule? If I hook the mini up to the time capsule via USB, can it serve as a hard-drive, even if my internet is down? Is it going to be much more worth my time to buck up and buy a new 320 GB mini?

I recently installed an AT&T 2Wire modem (both wireless and ethernet). It setup OK and the wireless network works perfectly with my wife's iPod Touch. For years I've also had and Airport Express with Airtunes that I use to send iTunes to my stereo. I opened up the Airport Network configure panel and tried to add the Airport network to the 2Wire network. After several minutes, I got a response that said it could not join the network. After that, my Airport network disappeared. It does not show up in the Airport Utility and it doesn't show up anywhere. I have the original CD that came with the Airport Express, but I can't reinstall the software because it requires OSX 10.3 and I have 10.4.11. How can I get the AE network back?

I have tried many permutations: different settings on the AirPort Express, different configurations of Ethernet cables and Wifi, you name it. In every case, there are at least occasional patches of silence lasting 0.5-5 seconds (playback does not pause during this silence). My findings: If the AirPort Express is not plugged into the Ethernet, but instead forced to use the Wifi coming out of my AirPort Extreme nearby, then the glitches are almost constant. It is so terrible, during five minutes of "playback" there might be thirty seconds of actual sound.
If the AirPort Express is plugged into the Ethernet, it doesn't matter whether my MacBook Pro is plugged in. There will be occasional glitches. At least some of these glitches are coming from the MacBook-end, because they sometimes coincide with Time Machine backups or processor-intensive tasks. What the hell? Is AirTunes just bad? Or is it my MacBook Pro, is it overloaded or does it have some errant process stepping on the AirTunes' toes?

My apologies if this is covered elsewhere, but I haven't been able to find a topic that answers my question - if there is one please let me know.
I would like to use my AE purely for remote speakers for itunes. This works fine if I select the AE as my network via Airport on my macbook, but then this means that I can't access my wireless modem and therefore the internet.
Any hints on how to select the AE purely for itunes and still be able to go only online?

I guess for the past few weeks, I wanna say since 10.5.3, the music I play through Airtunes has sounded crumby. Some distortion and crackling. I got a bit worried and thought it was maybe a HW issue, but tests and wavelengths turned out ok, and games/tv/movies had no issues. So I turned on Airfoil, to force all system sound through the AP Express and thus my sound system, and played songs back and forth, from iTunes and Airtines, to Quick Look/Quicktime and Airfoil. Lo and behold, Airtunes sounds nasty, Airfoil sounds perfectly fine.
