OS X :: Finder Restarts Itself - G5 Tower
Mar 30, 2009
I have a problem on a G5 tower. OSX 10.4.11, dual 2.3gh with 2.5 gb RAM. Every few minutes finder restarts. Even if nothing else is running, the finder window will just close. Other programs seem to run fine.

I have an early 2008 MacPro-10GB memory. Recently switched out two of the drives and decided to try a mirrored RAID setup with 2 3TB Seagate Barracuda drives as the boot set (using Lion 10.7.2). Ever since, I have had random episodes where the finder quits, everything closes and then the finder comes back up and is ready to go but all my programs have been shut down in the process.It can happen as often as four times an hour. I don't lose more than a couple of minutes of work but if I'm iChatting, I suddenly lose the connection or scanning stops or printing stops. Should I not have tried to set up the RAID?

My Finder "quits" or "restarts" when I try to access any file other than a single file that is on the Desktop.
WANT: To repair the operation of the finder so I have access to all my files.
SYSTEM: I am currently running OS 10.5.8 on an older Macbook, with a 325 GB HD. (Note: I started having this trouble on OS 10.5.7 but upgraded to 10.5.8 but the problem still persisted.)
SYMPTOMS:
1. Most of the time when I access my files on the file called Dons MacBook all the file information shown on the Desktop will disappear and then reappear in a second similar to when you are starting the OS. The Finder itself, with all the files listed, will not appear
2. However, sometimes the Finder WILL appear and when all the files are shown and i click on any file or folder the "busy" circle will appear for a time and then the Desktop will "quit" or "reset" again as describe above.
3. I ran Disk Doctor from my start up disk. The disk needed no repairs. When I went to "Verify Disk Premissions" I received the following: "Error: No valid packages."
4. Forum research told me that I needed a "Basesystem.pkg" installed in my Library file but even if I found one on the net or my original OS CD I do not have access to my Library folder because when I try to access it in the Finder, if the Finder actually appears, it "resets" as described above.
5. All the programs on my Dock will start and operate normally. These programs "go get" stored files and run them normally. From that I know that the "resetting" of the Finder does not mean that I am losing programs or they are being erased. (I can only run programs on the Dock because they are not accessible in the Finder as all other files.)
6. I can access the finder information when I am trying to Save a file. The Finder window that appears for me to search for a place to put a document works okay.
7. I can download email attachments (pdf) documents, for example, to the Desktop one at a time but if I put them in a common file on the Desktop, when I call up the common file, the Finder window starts but "resets" as noted above.
8. If I have a file on a CD when the Finder comes up to list the files in the CD, it "resets" as described above.

whenever I even go near the Downloads folder, Finder crashes. This happens whether I try to access it from Users -> (username) or if I am trying to attach something to an email, in list view. It is really irritating me, because I put most of my stuff into this folder, and cannot access it!

Finder will flick to blue screen for a split second and restart quitting all open apps. Not restarting the iMac, but just Finder? I've ran Disk Utility and found no problems and also ran a Hardware Test and found no problems. The only indication I have is in Console which without posting the whole log the below lines stand out to me as potential issues:
HIToolbox: received notification of WindowServer event port death.
This line is present numerous times with each application name that was open next to it indicating to me a reason each app has quit? Then a long list of this line repeated;
com.apple.fontd [58544] FODBCheck: foRec->annexNumber != kInvalidAnnexNumber (0)
Followed by:
com.apple.WindowServer[58526] WindowServer[58526] <Error>: kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint() to catch errors as they are logged.
This happened once yesterday and a few times today so it's becoming more regular...

We have a Mac Pro Tower Quad-Core Intel Xeon 2.8 Mhz. with Apple HD 30 inch Display. OS X 10.5.8 with no Raid card. 4 GB ram, 300 GB hard drive, with only 30 GB left to use. A random message comes up asking me: Are you sure you want to shut down your computer? Restart, Sleep, Cancel or Shutdown. I ran Disk Utility off the CD, repaired permissions. Rebooted computer and the message re-appeared after it loaded the OS X. I removed all startup process from 3rd party software. Turned off Bluetooth settings, as I have a wired keyboard and Mouse. What could be happening? No new hardware or software has been installed for 1 year. All OS X updates are current. I attempted to look in the console logs but some of the information is foreign to me.

This morning my Mac Pro tower worked but seemed buggy. I decided to reboot and went into Restart function. I got the chime, have display of Apple but instead of the spinning dial, I now see the dreaded circle with a slash through it. Not a good sign. I tried to repeat with same results.

I updated my G3 today to 10.3 finally and everything was working great until I updated software to 10.3.9 now my wireless isn't detecting any signals while it was working before the update. I'm thinking a driver was broken any ideas. It's a linksys wireless adapter I do believe.

Just got my new Mac Pro and I'm rearranging my desk/office to accommodate this monster tower. I think I know the optimal answer to this question, but, where is the best place to position this tower - so that I can maximize desk space and not attract too many dust bunnies. My office is carpeted and the last time I opened up my old PC tower loacated on the floor, it looked like a lanscape from Mars, with dust everywhere. I'd like to put the Mac Pro on the floor and I could raise it 5 or 6 inches, if needed, to hopefully avoid some dust. I'm just leary as this unit has so much venting and I'm guessing considerable cross ventilation. Also, if I did put the system on the floor, what is the method of internal cleaning - an anti-static vacuum?

I've got a powermac G5 dual 2ghz and 3 gigs of RAM that has a dead logic board. I don't really want to pay the $900 to have it replaced, so I'm thinking about just parting out the rest of the machine.

My computer crashed yesterday, and when I reboot, it took forever to restart, then crashed a couple more times. I tried a disk repair from the install CD disk utilities, but after an hour or so, it said disk couldn't repair (I think it repaired things like the B-tree and directories). Now it takes 10mins+ to boot, and apps that used to launch right away, take a long time. There's a lag as I type this in now. It's a dual 2ghz PowerPC G5, 3gigs of ram, running on tiger 10.4.11.

Just dived into the Mac world but I was transporting my brand new Mac Pro quad through JFK airport and checked it in the original packing with EXTRA wrapping. Well some TSA agent wanted to check the insides to make sure it was a Mac and the guy must of not known how to pull the lever so he took a crow bar to external parts and pried it open. So I need to get myself a new tower / case for my Mac. Anyone know where I can sort one? Besides going thorugh Apple care or something as I blew ALL of my cash on the system itself so I would just buy the new case and dismantle and rebuild it by myself as it looks pretty easy going.

I have a G4 800 powermac Quicksilver tower. I haven't used it regularly for a number of years, although it has been started up say every 5 months or so without any problems at all. Last weekend I started it up and it worked for about 2 minutes before suddenly shutting down, without warning. I tried starting up again and it started up, only to shut down as soon as the desktop appeared.
I started up again, and whilst the light in the power switch on the front panel illuminated, and a short 'apple boing' noise came on, it just shut down immediately after. Having left the computer untouched until the following weekend (today) the same order of events has unfolded. two minutes for the first go until unannounced shutdown, and then progressively shorter amounts of power. Whilst this isn't a critical piece of hardware for me, it does hold some useful data.

We have a Dual 867MHz G4 MDD (combo drive) running OSX 10.2.8. We're in the UK, which is Region 2 for DVD's.Somehow (probably by accidentally playing a Region 1 disc) the drive is stuck on region 1, and refuses to be changed to region 2.When I click on "Set region now", I get the attached error message. When I click on OK, the region 2 DVD gets ejected.How can I set the G4 so as it will play region 2 DVD's again?

I have a Mac Pro (Intel) and have 2 empty hard drive slots. I have an external 2TB hard drive that I would like to take out of it's case and install into the tower. Can I do this without ruining the external drives? Here is my concern: I own an ACOMDATA 2TB drive, Model DHD2000UFAB-72. It is actually 2 hard drives inside. Is there something in the external case that or motherboard inside the external case that helps them run together as one? If I put each one inside a separate slot in my tower will it work?

I need some help/suggestions as to why my G5 tower won't connect to a wireless network. I recently moved into a guest house with free wireless internet. My landlord gave me the password to tap in, and it works great on my netbook, which is what I am using to post this entry. It also works with my iPod Touch. However, my G5 times out every time I try. It recognizes the network and when I type in the password, it tries to join it and after a few moments it says "connection timed out"
Why is this happening? I'm up to date on software/hardware updates. I've even tried shutting down my netbook to see if that was the reason it wasn't connecting, but nope. Still doesn't connect.I like my netbook and internet browsing is speedy on it but I need my desktop for most of my work and internet productivity.

Have a Power Mac G4 MDD - Apple genius bar looked at it and told me probably need a new power supply (shutting down at will and having trouble powering up but before that the computer was running well) and I'm not sure if I should get a used or new one on ebay or if you have a better idea. Can't afford a whole new system so want to resurrect this one.
