Intel Mac :: Whenever Try To Access Downloads Folder, Finder Crashes And Restarts Itself

Jun 17, 2012

whenever I even go near the Downloads folder, Finder crashes. This happens whether I try to access it from Users -> (username) or if I am trying to attach something to an email, in list view. It is really irritating me, because I put most of my stuff into this folder, and cannot access it!

OS X :: Unable To Access The Files - Finder Quits And Restarts?

Sep 27, 2010

My Finder "quits" or "restarts" when I try to access any file other than a single file that is on the Desktop.

WANT: To repair the operation of the finder so I have access to all my files.

SYSTEM: I am currently running OS 10.5.8 on an older Macbook, with a 325 GB HD. (Note: I started having this trouble on OS 10.5.7 but upgraded to 10.5.8 but the problem still persisted.)

SYMPTOMS:
1. Most of the time when I access my files on the file called Dons MacBook all the file information shown on the Desktop will disappear and then reappear in a second similar to when you are starting the OS. The Finder itself, with all the files listed, will not appear

2. However, sometimes the Finder WILL appear and when all the files are shown and i click on any file or folder the "busy" circle will appear for a time and then the Desktop will "quit" or "reset" again as describe above.

3. I ran Disk Doctor from my start up disk. The disk needed no repairs. When I went to "Verify Disk Premissions" I received the following: "Error: No valid packages."

4. Forum research told me that I needed a "Basesystem.pkg" installed in my Library file but even if I found one on the net or my original OS CD I do not have access to my Library folder because when I try to access it in the Finder, if the Finder actually appears, it "resets" as described above.

5. All the programs on my Dock will start and operate normally. These programs "go get" stored files and run them normally. From that I know that the "resetting" of the Finder does not mean that I am losing programs or they are being erased. (I can only run programs on the Dock because they are not accessible in the Finder as all other files.)

6. I can access the finder information when I am trying to Save a file. The Finder window that appears for me to search for a place to put a document works okay.

7. I can download email attachments (pdf) documents, for example, to the Desktop one at a time but if I put them in a common file on the Desktop, when I call up the common file, the Finder window starts but "resets" as noted above.

8. If I have a file on a CD when the Finder comes up to list the files in the CD, it "resets" as described above.

OS X :: Downloads Folder Could Not Be Opened - No Access Privileges

Dec 27, 2008

Error message: "The folder 'Downloads' could not be opened because you do not have sufficient access privileges." I get this error message both on my computer and in time machine. I sent in my comp to apple they replaced the hard drive to my surprise; I created a brand new user account without reloading any info off time machine. Then once that account was created I opened the migration assistant utility and restored certain information off of time machine. I then deleted the 'new' account. Now I'm on the restored account and I do not have access to particular folders on the macintosh hd. in time machine I am blocked from accessing them as well. I googled a lot and some say its a MAC address, but I'm not so sure that's the case for my particular situation. Lot of important files are locked up that I need to access asap!

OS X :: Downloads Folder Opening In Finder Rather Than A Window?

Dec 20, 2010

As far as I can see, someone on my work mac right clicked on the 'Downloads' folder and set the 'Open With' option to 'Preview'.

As such, when the icon is clicked every item in the Downloads folder opens in preview (massive pain) and there are issues with the folder working on the dock. I tried changing the 'open with' option on the Downloads folder myself but there isn't anything appropriate to change it back to. I assumed finder but that isnt an option.

OS X :: Applications Folder Crashes Finder For One User?

Feb 11, 2008

My main user account went haywire at the weekend - dock disappearing and Finder cycling and rebooting every few seconds. I fixed those issues by trashing the dock and finder .plist files, and all appears to be well except...I cannot access the Applications folder without the Finder crashing. All other folders appear fine.- I can access the Applications folder using another user- I can access the apps themselves from spotlight- I tried trashing .DS_Store - no difference.

Applications :: Keynote Crashes - MacBook Spontaneously Restarts

Sep 21, 2008

MacBook Core Duo, Leopard 10.5.5, Keynote 4.0.3

Periodically when I play a Keynote presentation my MacBook will spontaneously restart. I've searched many different forums and found many others with the same problem, but no working fix yet. I have a huge presentation next week and obviously I can no longer trust Keynote to do it (quite a few ugly stories on the other forums about embarrassing keynote crashes in front of large audiences).

Mac Pro :: Finder Suddenly Quits And Restarts?

Feb 28, 2012

I have an early 2008 MacPro-10GB memory. Recently switched out two of the drives and decided to try a mirrored RAID setup with 2 3TB Seagate Barracuda drives as the boot set (using Lion 10.7.2). Ever since, I have had random episodes where the finder quits, everything closes and then the finder comes back up and is ready to go but all my programs have been shut down in the process. It can happen as often as four times an hour. I don't lose more than a couple of minutes of work but if I'm iChatting, I suddenly lose the connection or scanning stops or printing stops. Should I not have tried to set up the RAID?

Intel Mac :: Why Does Finder Crash When Try And Open A Folder

Apr 7, 2012

Here's an interesting one for all you intelegent people out there.

I have a 2011 iMac running Lion. I have a USB harddrive connected which stores digial versions of all my DVDs so that I can stream them to my AppleTV. Has no issues with it before now. A moment ago my Mac crashed and had to be restarted by holding down the button at the back (first time ever!!). When i turned the thing back on, the drive didn't mount so I went into disk utility and repaired the drive which resulted in it mounting.

Here lies the problem, I can access files on my drive in every other folder but the Movies on. See the below video. [URL]†

have I lost my 660gb+ collection of movies?

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Finder Flicker On Blue Screen And Restarts Quitting All Open Apps

Apr 27, 2012

Finder will flick to blue screen for a split second and restart quitting all open apps. Not restarting the iMac, but just Finder? I've ran Disk Utility and found no problems and also ran a Hardware Test and found no problems.†The only indication I have is in Console which without posting the whole log the below lines stand out to me as potential issues:

HIToolbox: received notification of WindowServer event port death.
This line is present numerous times with each application name that was open next to it indicating to me a reason each app has quit?†Then a long list of this line repeated;
com.apple.fontd [58544] FODBCheck: foRec->annexNumber != kInvalidAnnexNumber (0)
Followed by:
com.apple.WindowServer[58526] WindowServer[58526] <Error>: kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint() to catch errors as they are logged.

This happened once yesterday and a few times today so it's becoming more regular...

OS X :: Appropriate Access Privileges For Downloads

Jun 7, 2009

I am the administrator on this computer, and every time I try downloading something from Software Updates it tells me I don't have appropriate access privileges. It didn't used to happen, and I've gotten by fine this year because I haven't had to download anything urgently. Now, I really need to download Mac OS X Update Combined 10.5.7, but it says "you do not have appropriate access privileges".

Also, although it tells me that I can try again by finding the installer package in the finder, the package does not exist on my computer. I've gone to system preferences, the only user checked to administer is me, and I don't see any other option that could fix the problem..
