OS X :: Errors Installing Leopard On Completely Erased Hard Drive

Aug 12, 2009

I'm about at my wits end. I would say I have a harddisk failure, but it passes every diagnostic I can throw at the thing. My problem is that I erased the main drive in my mac (been booting from an external hd) and I'm trying to install Leopard on this drive. The Leopard install starts, I'm able to choose the disk, and tell it to erase and install (or just install after erasing the disk externally). The installer starts, gets about 30-40 minutes in and then just plain stops because some package or other (seems to be different every time) is corrupt. My only option is to reboot and try again. I've done it three times now and am starting to feel rather stupid. Is there a known issue here that anyone can direct me at? I didn't see anything snarfing around the forums, but that doesn't mean I could've just plain missed it. I've just finished running tech tool pro 4 hardware tests (drive controller, etc.), surface scan, disk utilities erase and verify hoping it would tell me if there is a disk problem brewing. So far all the tests show green. I decided to try and hit the thing with something that writes to every imaginable space on the disk, so I ran erase free space from disk utilities. I plan on trying again after that finishes.

OS X :: Installing Leopard From Ex Hard Drive

Jan 19, 2010

I have the disk image for Leopard on my external hard drive. I put it on there from my Powerbook. I tried to reinstall Leopard onto a Macbook but it wouldn't let me because I had to do a GUID partition on the external hard drive. I did that, put the DMG back onto the external drive and went to install it. I went to Startup Disk under System Prefences but my hard drive isn't showing up.

my white macbooks hard drive broke along with my cd drive. I purchased a new hard drive and put it in but now I have no way to install Leopard since my cd drive is broke.I do understand the best way would be to buy an external CD drive and use that but I would rather not waste all that money on one use.I do have a firewire cable and my friend has a white macbook. I've heard that you can boot using another computer and use there cd drive via firewire by holding "T" or whatever.

OS X :: Erased Hard Drive - Cannot Reinstall Mac

Dec 24, 2010

I have never had this problem before: I deleted Bootcamp partition. Repaired my hard disk and then erased my hard drive. Now I am trying to reinstall Snow Leopard and after the install starts it says: 35 minutes remaining" for about 5 minutes. Then it goes to a screen that says: "Install Failed: Mac OSX could not be installed on your computer. The Installer could not copy the necessary support files. Click Restart to restart your computer and try installing again." I tried restarting and installing and I get the exact same situation. I am not sure what is going on here. This MBP is less than 6 months old and this is the 1st time I have tried a reinstall on this particular machine.

MacBook Pro :: Formatting My Hard Drive And Installing Leopard?

Dec 26, 2007

I think I'm going to format my hard drive to delete everything from it and start fresh with leopard. I already have leopard installed, but I think I should just format my hard drive (after backing up what I truly need like my music and other files) and then just install leopard.

Question, I have read that I go to disk utility to do this (format and install leopard), is this correct? If so, what else do I need to know before I do this?

OS X :: Formatting Hard Drive And Installing Snow Leopard?

Jan 24, 2010

I am having problems with my I-Mac. It is the 2.8GHZ 24" model and when I try to start it up I get a white screen with a blinking grey file folder with a "?" mark in it??

I had this problem before. Erased the hard drive and then reinstalled everything. I made it through it but I think I may have done it wrong. Anyways the computer worked good till the other day. I upgraded to Snow Leopard and now it is doing it again.

Do I need to start with the install disk 1 that came with the computer and install disk 2, then install snow leopard? Or can is there a faster route of doing this?

MacBook Pro :: Intel Hard Drive Not Recognized When Installing Leopard

Jul 15, 2010

I have a Macbook pro 17" 2008 model, and I just bought a new 160gb Intel X-25m solid state hard drive. I installed it into the mac with no problem, but when I boot up with the OS boot disc 1, the drive doesn't show up in the "destination" screen. No drives are there. When I open Disk Utility the drive is there, and shown as read/write, but when I boot with option held down the drive isn't there either. I can't even do any repairs on the drive in the disk utility.

OS X :: Time Machine Erased External Hard Drive?

Nov 10, 2007

I started installing Leopard last night before going out. I came back late last night (or early this morning) and sat down to explore the new OS. There was a pop-up about using Time Machine with my external hard drive. I clicked okay.

It began loading and running Time Machine before telling me my external hard drive was the wrong format or something. It then gave me the option to delete (which I assumed ment delete the Time Machine files from my external hard drive). I clicked on it.

A few minutes later I realized that it had erased my entire external hard drive, renaming it "Time Machine Backups". I had JUST moved my entire music and movie collection to that hard drive and am wondering if there's any way I can recover those files.

OS X :: Disk Utility Partition Erased Hard Drive?

Nov 12, 2009

I was making a partition on my USB external drive in order to put a disk image of Snow Leopard on it, so I could boot off of it.

I added a 10GB partition to the drive, and clicked Apply. The following dialogue box came up:

Partitioning this disk will change some of the volumes. No volumes will be erased.

This volume will be added:
"Snow Leopard"

This volume will be resized:
"XXX HDD"

I clicked Partition, and it finished very quickly. I checked Finder, and the entire drive, BOTH partitions are completely empty.

MacBook Pro :: How To Restore Files From Erased Hard Drive

Apr 24, 2012

I recently got infected with a trojan, and after updating my mac was told I've also picked up malware software. I moved everything I needed to my hard drive and wiped and reloaded my mac. I then checked my time machine backups on my hard drive and found the malware files on the time machine backups too. so i took what I needed off my hard drive and wiped that, but without realising have deleted my uni work folder containing my essays. Is there anyway to recover the files? I've tried using a couple of programs online but there only trials, so when I find the file I cant restore it.

Hardware :: Seagate External Hard Drive Erased Pictures

Apr 8, 2009

I got a Seagate 500GB external hard drive recently. I'm looking to delete files from my Mac after I back them up on the external hard drive. I tested this with one picture and after I deleted the picture then backed up the hard drive, the hard drive 'erased' the picture. I did talk to Seagate and the guy said it wasn't actually erased, it just went into history. (Although I can't find history and forgot to ask :/)

So, my question is - How can I put files on the external hard drive then delete them from my Mac and when I later back up my computer, keep the files on my external hard drive that were previously deleted from my computer. I know the files will be in history but I'd like for all of them to be in one place instead of searching through history for maybe one file here and there. I hope this makes sense!!! (I have Leopard OS)

MacBook Pro :: Disk Errors Reappear Within Day After Repair-Hard Drive Dead?

Mar 6, 2012

Over the last few weeks, I have been experiencing crashes on my Macbook Pro. The crash would appear as such: I'll be using Chrome and all of a sudden pages won't load. The mouse continues to work, but if I navigate to the desktop, folder won't open. Then, if I try to quit programs, the dock either becomes unresponsive or programs will only quit if "forced quit." Then the beachball of death appears. The beachball of death will continue for a very long time—perhasp indefinitely, so I decide to manually power down the computer.

I have tried to verify the hard drive in Disk Utility, and a few times I have gotten this error: Volume bitmap needs minor repair for orphaned blocksChecking volume information.Invalid volume free block count(It should be 46122698 instead of 42839276)The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.Error: This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD. Restart your computer, holding down the Command key and the R key until you see the Apple logo. When the Mac OS X Utilities window appears, choose Disk Utility. So I restart from the system (command-R) and repair the disk. But now within a day or two I get the same error.  Does my hard drive need to be replaced? Am I on borrowed time? My computer is under warranty. Do you think Apple will replace the hard drive?

OS X :: Macbook Pro Hard Drive Completely Full?

Dec 5, 2010

Not exactly sure what happened, but I think it has something to do with the new iPhoto? I booted it for the 1st time off my external drive to create a X-Mas Card and imported 4 photos into it. Don't know if after opening it, it attempted to import all the photos from my external drive to my internal drive? Don't know why it would do that but there is no sign of it in the Pictures folder. Any ideas? Only other thing I did was sync my iPad, so I went into my backups and deleted all those files and it freed up 16gb. I started last night with 44 gb and don't know where in the f the rest of my space went? I've used DriveSlim to attempt to find any wasted space, but nothing turned up Is there a way to see specifically what happened last night?? I have Time Machine running I've restarted my comp, and still stuck around 16gbs......clueless as to where this Hard-drive space is being used. I've gone thru all my main folders (pictures, music, movies, etc...) and its not being wasted their....has to be hiding somewhere in my Library or what?

OS X :: External Hard Drive Goes To Sleep Completely?

Apr 20, 2009

As I've read in many threads there's no way to turn off the blue light, even when my imac is off or sleep, and even thou the hdd is (or might) be asleep, the light always stays on... over all this is not a huge deal, but since the imac is in my room sometimes the light it's a little annoying. I was wondering if anyone here has an external hard drive that goes to sleep and even the lights turn off completely..

Specially if it's a famous brand.. like WD or anything along those lines.. since I'm looking to upgrade my external HDD i figured it's a good to know.. otherwise i'm going to just upgrade to the 1tb Lacie.. I'm considering the 1tb "My Book" because even thou I read that the 500gb had a lot of issues apparently the 1tb one is a lot better.. has anyone has had this drive? Any issues?
