Feb 19, 2010I was backing up my music and pictures on my external hard drive and erased the old copy. When I tried to empty my trash after that I could not remove the files because I did not have sufficient privileges. Using the rm -rf code I was able to remove everything except my itunes library. Anyone have any suggestions how to get my itunes library out of my trash? It only shows up when the external drive is plugged in.

Aug 12, 2009I'm about at my wits end. I would say I have a harddisk failure, but it passes every diagnostic I can throw at the thing. My problem is that I erased the main drive in my mac (been booting from an external hd) and I'm trying to install Leopard on this drive. The Leopard install starts, I'm able to choose the disk, and tell it to erase and install (or just install after erasing the disk externally). The installer starts, gets about 30-40 minutes in and then just plain stops because some package or other (seems to be different every time) is corrupt. My only option is to reboot and try again. I've done it three times now and am starting to feel rather stupid. Is there a known issue here that anyone can direct me at? I didn't see anything snarfing around the forums, but that doesn't mean I could've just plain missed it. I've just finished running tech tool pro 4 hardware tests (drive controller, etc.), surface scan, disk utilities erase and verify hoping it would tell me if there is a disk problem brewing. So far all the tests show green. I decided to try and hit the thing with something that writes to every imaginable space on the disk, so I ran erase free space from disk utilities. I plan on trying again after that finishes.

Dec 12, 2009I just created my address book with tons of email addresses and mail addresses. Was happy that was done, started to make groups and as I was dragging and dropping, creating a new group, suddenly there were only two vcards showing. I did undo add to group and undo selected card and that was the furthest I could go back to undo. Now I only have 2 addresses. I checked the trash bin and there is nothing in there from address book, no recovered files either. I searched and found a $99 service to to recover files but don't want to pay - seems that there should be some other way. What happened, and what can I do to find all of those contacts again?

Mar 20, 2012I have taken everything out of the trash and then returned items in small groups for successful emptying. That identified the problem which seems to be one iMovie 08 clip that causes the Secure Empty Trash to freeze. The progress bar shows that it contains 3 items which drops to 2 almost instantly. Then it freezes and just stays there (45 minutes or longer) until I select Force Quit. Clicking on the Stop Emptying Trash has no effect whatever.

Apr 24, 2012I recently got infected with a trojan, and after updating my mac was told I've also picked up malware software. I moved everything I needed to my hard drive and wiped and reloaded my mac. I then checked my time machine backups on my hard drive and found the malware files on the time machine backups too. so i took what I needed off my hard drive and wiped that, but without realising have deleted my uni work folder containing my essays. Is there anyway to recover the files? I've tried using a couple of programs online but there only trials, so when I find the file I cant restore it.

So now I have a trash folder full all my Drobo's content and I can't figure out how to get it all back to "put back"! Aug 7, 2009How can I get my iMac to completely empty my trash? My delete secure trash always starts at 9,500 or more items to delete. Then the message: "The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "501" could not be read or written. (Error code-36)" always comes on when there are still 9,474 items left. I click continue and one more item is deleted down to 9,473, then it quits deleting. The files left in the trash are like this example: QHAE.la Dec 31,1903, 6:00PM Zero KB Alias. There are 38 of them and the date, time, size and kind are all the same.

Jun 12, 2012I have tried several times to dump my trash. The message comes up to empty all or just unlocked items. I select the all option and it begins to empty the trash bin. But soon after starting, the trash -------- bar showing how many trash items have been emptied shuts down. When I go back to check the trash bin, there is still a lot of trash that hasn't been dumped. How do I fix my trash bin so it empties everything out?

Sep 14, 2009I have a very bizarre problem. This all started with me wanting to share some iWork '09 templates with a coworker. (On 10.6.1 btw)
The templates *should* be stored in Library->Application Support->iWork->Pages->MyTemplates
But through the finder, no such tree exists. I've got Library->Application Support->iWork'09 and that's it.
I opened up Pages and went to "Save as template..." By default it opens up a file picker dialog starts with the default template folder path above. I can navigate the tree in the file picker dialog (and all my template files are there) but in the finder no such directory exists.
I tried typing the name of my template files in spotlight and it can't find them. But I can open templates just fine in Pages.
Final Cut Pro X :: MPEG Files Exported Aren't Readable On PC
Sep 7, 2014My FCP crashed last week and the only option left was to install OS 10 which enabled me to install the latest FCP. The 'update' thing didn't happen for me so I lost everything.Â
After redoing weeks of work, my plan was to return to my old system - exporting mpeg files in FCP and transferring them to my PC where I use Nero to make menus. This has always worked in the past. However, since updating OS X and FCP, any mpeg files aren't read via VLC on my PC. I have tried a whole array of export options (various codecs - H264/Apple Pro Res) but nothing works. I have tried to open the mpeg files on 2 computers but still no luck. Both computers have updated versions of VLC and Quicktime.Â

Sep 24, 2010I recently installed ilife 09 into my imac but I cant take advantage of the face detection feature. I deleted my jpg files in the data folder because I thought it was a duplicate file. I didn't know when downloading pictures from a digital camera, iphoto creates two jpg files. One in data folder and other in original folder. I tried copying the jpg files from original folder into the data folder but I'm still having issues. Is there any way I can recover my jpg files from data folder?

May 1, 2012Despite having several files in the trash, its icon never changes (always shows an empty trash) and the "Empty Trash" option is dimmed (that is, cannot be used). OnyX ws the only solution but it's temporary. What's the fix I should apply to Mac OS X? Also, why is it that every time I want to move a file to trash I must enter my password? It's annoying to say the least.Please help me as I don't want to go through the royal pains of installing everything again, Windows-style. I think Mac OS X should be better than that.

May 16, 2012A few days ago, I tried to open iTunes, and I got an error message that iTunes could not open because of error 13024. I tried to open skype, and I had an error message that it couldn't open as well. Â
Confused, I decided to restart the computer. When I got to the login screen, I entered my password and hit enter. The login wondow closed, but the login screen (the purple space picture) remained. I waited and waited, but it still remained. The cursor wasn't showing that the mac was working on it. Â
Frustrated after trying and retrying to restart the computer and login with no success, I started pushing random buttons dejectedly on the keyboard. When I hit the play/pause button, and iTunes started opening. The same errror message came up, but with it came the top iTunes bar, complete with the little apple symbol in the top right hand corner. Â
With that, I was able to open firefox, pages, and other recent items. But I can't open finder, and the dock is still gone. Â
Other issues that have come with this: history items don't save on firefox, copy & paste doesn't work for any programs, i can't sage changes I've made to existing pages documents. Â
I should note that my startup disk is full. I was in the miiddle of finding files I didn't need to delete when this all happened. I've tried deleting files through the "open..." function in pages, with no luck. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the issue. Â
