I need to populate the bays of my new MacPro 2.66 with 5GB RAM. The stock HD turns out to be a Seagate 250GB HD ST3250820A. I've found them online and wonder if I just should RAID three or four of them as opposed to one Seagate 500GBs or 750 with 32GB cache? These would all be a Raid run by Apple software not a RAID card.

View 24 Replies View RelatedI am trying to create a new image .. and my hard drive is not listed on the left hand panel .. the other night it worked fine except it would keep locking up so i did a disc repair and then restarted when i did a restart to prepare for a fresh install i noticed my hard drive was no longer in the disc utlitity not sure why that is.. Now the Snow leopard disc is stuck in the drive and I am unable to eject the disc tried almost every ejection command there is nothing .. isnt there a way to mount the hard drive through the terminal?

I use clang-3.1 in C++11 mode, with -stdlib=libc++, without any IDE, just on the command line.
My problem is: my c++ code is expected to throw exceptions (I'm testing it), but the Terminal does not print out the exception messages. Instead of my nice exception messages (which I see with clang-3.1 on linux), I have things like: "terminate called throwing an exceptionAbort trap:"
How should I act on the environment of the code to display those exception messages? I don't want to change the code.

I'm trying to restore an old Hard Drive image OS.dmg to a usb hard drive that I have. I'm using the command: dd if=/Users/Shared/OS.dmg of=/dev/disk5 bs=1m. And I'm getting, dd: /dev/disk5: Resource busy. What would cause this error? I'm not sure why it's "busy". I get the exact same thing when I try to do it in Disk Utility.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo I was using Safari this afternoon, even though I usually use Firefox or Chrome. It crashed again on me and a box appeared that said it may be due to the WCIDEngine Plugin? When I read the problem details to send to Apple, it said "EXC_BAD_ACCESS for exception type, and then for exception codes it said "KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at (some numbers I'm not copying over). Worse yet, it reminded me that I've had 7 crashes since last report. I'm getting awfully tired of this crap. I run a PC that's on Windows 7 and it runs like a charm. I am seriously thinking about going back to it because I got my Mini with the expectation that it would work and most of the time it does, but it's little repetitive things like this that make me question it. I will add that I scrolled down the problem details list and it said that "Thread 0 Crashed" and then proceeded to list a number of things about symantec, like .com/symantec.WCIDEngine".

I've done a bit of search on the two codes I'm seeing and guess it might be the NuRam (8gb) I just put into it. Just wondering if there is anyway I can test the ram before I call them up? I took the advice of people online and created a sparse image file as a way of password protecting folders on my hard drive. Worked well for a while. These days, when I try to add or delete files from that sparse image, I get error 61 code. Why can't I write/delete from that mounted image anymore?

My files were backing up for about a day, had 75gb of 100gb done and then my power went out. It cancelled out, and then when it came back on I tried to resume it. It started to backup 25gb, which I'm assuming is just the last 25gb that it had to do. Anyway, it did that for a while then stopped, and now when I try to backup, it says: "Time Machine Error: The backup disk image could not be mounted."
How do I backup the rest of my stuff? Do I have to start over? And is there a way to make it transfer faster? I mean, there's no way to directly connect it to your computer, is there? Also, in the Time Machine settings thing, it says "Available: 839.8GB of 929.5GB. Does that mean it has 839gb of my 929gb backed up? What happened to the other 71gb? I just want my stuff to be backed up, why is this so complicated?

Recently, I have discovered a quite strange shortcut � first in Safari then in any cocoa apps. If you select some text in browser url bar and press Cntrl+L then the text will be shortly highlighted. It looks very similar to the keyword highlighting during search trough web pages. Take a look on short screencast and you will get what I mean � on my blog (in russian) or youtube.
Such yellow few seconds highlighting happens also in Google search bar of Safari, in TextEdit and so on. Interesting is that the Control+L shortcut disapear in Safari 4.0 Preview.
I have no idea what is the reason to use this shortcut. Is it programmers error? Easter egg?
Does anyone know if Firefox 4 is Cocoa or Carbon. If it is none of those than what exactly is it.

I am sick and tired of network hangs and such stuff which happens with the current Finder (Which seems to only work single-threadedly) and am looking forward to Leopard and hoping that it has been rewritten.
Somehow I have this gutfeeling, that they put this "Eyecandy"-Feature Coverflow on top of the old finder and changed nothing underneath.
Error message "The backup disk image could not be created." I have tried everything I have found online in the community from TM full reset to changing my computers name. Anything else I can try? I am using a Seagate external HD with a connection through my router. I spent an hour on the phone with seagate and everything is ok on the HD end. TM sees it and it is mounted but cannot go any further

As expected, Apple overnight equipped its vast developer community with a new build of its upcoming Snow Leopard operating system that includes significant changes, such as a redesigned QuickTime Player.
People familiar with the matter confirm the build number to indeed be 10A286, as was predicted by AppleInsider in a software-related news roundup published earlier in the week.
Among the changes developers will see in the latest beta is a completely redesigned QuickTime Player -- believed to be QuickTime X Player -- which sports "a new minimal user interface*focused predominately on playback," those people say.
Also widely distributed outside Apple's walls for the first time is a new Cocoa-based Mac OS X desktop envoirnment featuring updated info windows and contextual menus.

I made a Winclone image of my Boot Camp partition before upgrading my hard drive, and now I've come to restore the image to a new partition I get the following error: "Invalid Image: MBR Not Found" I get the same error whether I create the partition using Boot Camp Assistant or using Winclone. Anyone had this error before or know the cause?

My parents are having the exact problem described in this thread (and I've been tasked with remote tech support): [URL] Upon startup, WinXP gives them a BSOD reboot loop while indicating that a DLL file is possibly corrupt. Booting in Safe Mode won't work, and reverting to an earlier snapshot merely delays the problem by 24 hours or so.
The obvious and ideal solution would be to boot into Repair mode from the install disc and copy the clean DLL to replace the damaged copy. The problem is that, according to the thread, I'll need to first get Fusion to accept a floppy image of SCSI adapter drivers for me to even be able to enter Repair mode. I am having problem with post processing a simulation. Every time I hit the "plot parameter" button within the software I get the same error. Opening the file on a windows machine works perfectly fine, therefore I have tried updating the Java through "Software update" and still no luck.

Safari used to let me drag an image from a webpage to the finder and have the dragged file be saved as an actual image but now all that's saved is a webloc file. I want the image saved, not a reference to the image's URL - do I now have to always use "save as" to save it?
I can understand Safari creating a webloc file if I dragged the site icon from the location bar to the finder, but to make the default behavior for dragging things that are parts of a page (not the page itself) as webloc files seems like a HUGE step backwards for usability.
Does anyone know if there's, say, a key to hold when dragging to avoid saving a webloc file or a defaults command or something to make Safari revert back to sane draging behavior?

One software says I cannot upload an image because the image or the container folder does not have permission. Indeed there is one "unknown" in permissions, that I cannot get to a read write no matter how hard I try -- both on the folder, the desktop, and the file (this is all on my laptop) I've done a repair permission.

When a user copies an image from a browser into PowerPoint 2011 he gets text of a link back to the image, not the image itself. But if he copies from a browser into Word he gets the image, and can then copy the image from Word to PowerPoint. Same results with both Firefox and Safari. Behavior is new so I assume it relates to recent software updates but user does not recall accepting any.
