Mac Pro :: Samsung Spinpoint 32mb Cache F1 Vs Seagate Barracuda 32mb Cache
Jan 26, 2008
Which one of these 500gb drives is better? I've been browsing Newegg for two hours now reading reviews. The Seagate drives seem to come with bad firmware that causes performance and cache recognition issues. The Samsung drives have a high failure rate. Whats the real deal? Has anyone here had any bad experiences with either drives?

I need to populate the bays of my new MacPro 2.66 with 5GB RAM. The stock HD turns out to be a Seagate 250GB HD ST3250820A. I've found them online and wonder if I just should RAID three or four of them as opposed to one Seagate 500GBs or 750 with 32GB cache? These would all be a Raid run by Apple software not a RAID card.

Is anyone having trouble with the above drive since the update?
I'm using it (Barracuda 7200.11 - 1TB) to house my home directory on my MacPro 2008, in one of the Internal Bays. Since the update I'm having trouble with folders and files going missing, countless freezes, preferences going missing, Time Machine dying.... it's practically crippled my Mac. A couple of times on restart it's failed to see the HD with the home directory on it, so, power down... restart... and everything has magically returned to normal.
The occasions it has worked I've checked out it's status using TechTool Pro 5 and it says everything is fine. 2 mins later - freeze.... restart.... I've tried the combo install. No joy.
The drives are only a couple of months old.... someone tell me it's not just me!

I just purchased 2 1TB Barracudas and upon installing them (bays 3 and 4) I noticed a faint but definitely audible (and aggravating) humming noise that comes in a cycle of about 5 seconds.
It sounds identical to this video (made by someone else, but with the same drive) but my cycle is a bit longer:

I'm wondering if this is an issue with the drives or my installation? I mounted them tightly. I tried staggering the new drives with my old drives in terms of bay order to no avail.
Has anyone experienced this? The price on these drives is killer ($129) but I'll be returning them soon if I can't kill this noise.

There seem to be a few reports of problems running 750gb F1 Spinpoints with Nvidia chipsets. Does this apply to us with the 8800 or is it a Windows thing?
Anyone out there happily running a MacPro (08) with an 8800 and F1 spinpoints?

any experience with one of these drives in a MBP?
Newegg has a 640GB one on sale for $65.98 through 7/25.
For $65, I would like to double the size of my current HDD (even though it's 7200RPM).

I have a Mac Mini Core Duo 1.66. Macs are VERY expensive here, and I know I cannot change my crappy Intel 950GMA video card. So What else can I do? I've read about people using Core 2 Duo processors, which one is the best I could get for my Mini? The processors aren't that expensive here, but there's the fact that a lot of them use different cache speeds. Also, with another processor, could I put more RAM in it, since my mini is limited to 2GB (it came with 512MB and I replaced it with 2 after 1 week). Anyone could tell me which is the best processor I could put in such a machine, since I'm stuck with this stupid video card and answer me if I can use more RAM if I upgrade the processor?

I'm brand new to mac, just got a 15" mbp. On my PC I was constantly used to clearing cookies, temp files, history, etc under properties on IE, because for security reasons, and to keep viruses at bay. What does the "Empty Cache" feature do on Safari 4? Is that the same as clearing cookies?

World of Warcraft was taking 5 to 10 minutes to load, I had no idea what the problem was then a Guildie suggested deleting the cache files in my library folder. I deleted them and miraculously everything was fixed. So why does deleting cache files speed up a program? I would have though it would slow down or even break a program.

I've noticed my hard drive space slowly whittling away for no apparent reason. Having done a bit of research on the net, the topic of cache files often come up, allegedly deleting htem clears up a lot of space and allows your mac to run much faster. Is it safe to do this? I have onyx for mac, which options under cleaning do people usually check when using it? I am running snow leopard 10.6.2

I am replacing a 5400 rpm 8MB cache with a 7200 rpm 16MB cache drive. I was curious whether perceptible speed improvement is more due to rpm speed or the size of the drive cache?

According to Mac Hardware Test L3 cache of Quicksilver 1ghz DP seems to fail in some way (Post 16/64)
causing my G4 to hang before finishing boot process.
My questions: - Does this occur on 1 of 2 processors or both?
The test gives no clue as to which processor causes problems - Can I resolve this myself?
Maybe by removing the faulted processor, ordisabling/bypassing L3 cache - If not, which part do I need to replace?
Hopefully not the entire logic board..?

Safari 5.0.5. MacOS 10.6.8..I am developping complex HTML+JavaScript. I notice that after a while (~30 mn) Safari does not clear its cache and re-uses old JS scripts. I have caches disabled in the development menu. Clearing cache or reinitialize Safari from the Safari menu is of no help.Only way is to delete the cache.db file in Libray/cache/com.apple.safari, exit Safari, empty trash, then relaunch !

I've found myself in a position where I need to restore my browser history and cache. I've got time machine backups that I can use, but I can't figure out how to do it.
For Firefox, I thought it would just has easy as restoring the folder found in ~/Home/Library/Application Support/Firefox from TM, but that doesn't seem to do the trick. I need to be able to get to the cache and not just the history to get some files that I hope got stored locally.
Also, I'm wondering if I can do this same thing for Safari. There are some files that I hope got stored locally that aren't available anymore.

My iMac 24 has been acting just a tiny bit sluggish of late, seeing the pinwheel a few times. All the reading I've gone through suggests two possibilities; overloaded cache or a HDD that's starting to go south. Hmmmm. OK, so exactly how do I get to the so-called "Library Caches" and which folders do I delete. Next, is there a good diagnostic tool that will give me layman's language results that a consumer/user can understand? And lastly, if the HDD is going south and my iMac is long past warranty... can I; (A) replace the HDD myself, and (B) can I upgrade the drive size (currently 500G) to a 1TB drive? My machine currently has 4 Gigs of RAM and I guess that's all it can handle right? Wish I could upgrade that!
I did clear my safari cache and saw a decent pickup in speed.
