OS X :: Disable Automount For Specific External Drive

Feb 21, 2010

I have an external drive that is permanently hooked-up to my iMac via Firewire. I use this drive only to perform a bootable disk image of my hard drive at regular intervals using the CCC scheduler. The backups are performed only once a week. I would like that this backup drive not be mounted when I or anyone else logs in to the computer. It annoys me to hear the drive turning and vibrating until it spins down and seeing it's icon on the desktop. Is there any way to prevent automount of this particular drive? I know I can dismount it manually using Diskutil, but I want everything to be automated. Any clue as to whether CCC will mount it when needed if it is unmounted?

Jan 30, 2009

I have a drive connected via USB 2.0 It's newly formatted with 2 partitions. Running 10.5.6 on a macbook.

The drive seems to work fine, the problem is whenever I reboot the two drives don't mount in finder.

When I look in disk utility. I can see the drive listed but the partitions are not.

I have to manually unplug and re insert the drive for it to function correctly.

I was wondering if there was any way to disable it from automounting because I know I can just change which os I want to start up in with the "option" button. If there is a process, could someone be really specific cause I'm still quite new to the mac.

OS X :: Disable Network Access For Specific Computer?

Is there a way to temporarily disable wireless network access for a specific computer, rather than changing the network password or creating a new network altogether? I'd like to be able to grant the computer access to the network when I want (and control this from the admin computer, without having to change anything on the computer for limited access).

OS X :: Disable Java In Safari For Specific Sites?

Mar 15, 2010

Does anyone know of a way I can disable Java on some sites in Safari, but have it enabled for the rest? I don't see an option natively, but maybe there is a plugin or a plist that can be edited?

The reason is my university uses Blackboard / Vista and every time I log in it asks me if I want to allow it to run. I refuse to do so, and it doesn't have an option to never allow it to run for this site.

Please don't bother posting if you do not know the difference between Java and JavaScript.

OS X V10.5 Leopard :: Force-disable Ability For Keychain To Store Specific Passwords?

Apr 5, 2012

Does anyone know of a way to force-disable the ability for Keychain to save/store the passwords for specific services? For example, when a user launches a FileMaker database, they're propted (via a Finder-style popup window) to enter their username/password for that database. And there's the checkbox option to "Remember this password in my keychain". The same thing happens when mounting Share Points via AFP on one of my Xserves — the user is prompted for their login credentials and given the option to remember the login info in their keychain.

It's our company's policy that users DO NOT use keychain to store passwords for these to services, but thus far, aside from physically checking the individual user accounts on the various machines (which is pretty much impossible), there's no way to enforce this policy. So, I'm hoping to find a way to disable the ability for passwords for these services to be stored in the user's keychain.

MacBook Pro :: External Hard Drive No Longer Appearing-Shows Up As "Vendor-specific Device"

Jun 14, 2012

I'm using a 500GB WD external hard drive to store a lot of data. It's been working fine, plugged into a USB hub. Suddenly, today, the drive stopped appearing when I plugged it in. I've tried plugging it in directly to the computer, it doesn't help. In system profiler, the USB port shows up as : Vendor Specific Device. The ID is confirmed as being from Initio, so I was rather dismayed. Upon trying the drive with another computer, same thing. The drive just shows up as an Initio device, not my external drive. I've rebooted and changed cables many times.

MacBook Pro :: External Storage - Express 34 With Specific I / F?

Jun 29, 2009

I thought this was a USB connected device (I am looking at 1T - two 500MB drives mirrored). I have read that if using large file formats (yes - RAW) perhaps the way to go is something like Sonnet Temp SATA Express 34. There is a lot of 'talk' of Western Digital My Book but these only seem to be USB. Now I am a little confused - am I restricted (device wise) if I go Express 34 as it appears to have a specific I/F? I do not have a limitless budget and have seen external storage devices between 50 - 100. On a winXP machine it seems almost any will do but I'm not familiar with the mac world.

OS X :: How To Disable Connected External Monitor

Jan 17, 2007

Is there an easy way to cause a connected external monitor to be "disabled?" E.G. I have an iMac connected to an LCD TV (via VGA, spanned, external at 1360x768). If the TV is plugged in, even if it's off, the computer switches to spanning mode. The consequence of this is that, if my preferred setup is to have the external be main, for instance, I essentially have to unplug it from the iMac whenever I don't want to be using it. Even if the external is the 2ary dsplay, it means that the mouse can go off the edge of the screen on one side, and that two of the hot corners are messed up. Is there any utility that could do something like add a "disable external display" item to preferences or the menu bar?

OS X :: IMac Specific Hard Drive Search

Apr 6, 2010

Can someone please give me the specifics on a 3.5 internal hard drive for my iMac G5 (17") running Leopard. My old HD was getting very full so I decided to replace it. I bought a Seagate 3.5 1TB at Staples ("good for PC or Mac"), brought it home, ripped into my iMac, removed the old HD and opened the new Seagate. Turns out it was for tower computers only. Took it back to Staples, where I learned that iMac HDs are Apple specific.

Called the local Apple store. Was told that they didn't carry HDs in stock but I could schedule an appointment with the Genius Bar and someone there could determine what I need. I know what I need -- a new HD --I just don't know where to get one or order it online because descriptions from online suppliers are not generous with the knowledge about what works with what. Never thought it would be so frustrating just to buy a replacement drive.

Windows On Mac :: Disable Trackpad Input When External Mouse Plugged In?

Aug 5, 2007

I don't know if anyone knows what I'm talking about, but in OS X, there's this option that disables input from the trackpad when an external mouse is plugged in. I couldn't find something similar to that for Windows, and since I use Boot Camp to play a few games in Windows and my palms keep swiping the corners of the trackpad (thereby making my aim wonky) I wanted something that would have the same effect.

So I Googled. And searched. And searched.

Best solution was to go to Control Panel and disable the mouse. But I'm lazy, I want something to do it for me, automatically, if possible.

So, in the interest of pure laziness, I... wrote a utility to do pretty much exactly that. It supports manually enabling or disabling the trackpad, and also automatically enabling and disabling it when an external mouse is plugged in/removed.

URL

So, if any of you guys are using Windows to play games or do anything else, and you have the same issue with the trackpad that I do, hopefully this helps you guys out too.

If not, well, thanks for reading and I'm jealous of your smaller palms and/or dexterous avoidance of palm/trackpad slippage!

Note: Still might be bugs and things. Feedback appreciated, but constructively, of course.

how to simply disable the superdrive - I have got the music into iTunes anyway, so don't need the drive?

MacBook Pro :: Disable Combo Drive Through Open Firmware Console

Aug 27, 2009

I have a mechanical fault with my combo drive (cdrw/dvd) in my Powerbook 12" 1.5 GHz running Leopard which makes it noisy even when there is no disk in there. Is it possible to disable the device by removing it from the device tree in Open Firmware before OS X boots? It sounds like the drive is checking for a disk. I am sure there is not a disk in there as it still accepts and ejects other disks. If it were to be removed from the device tree would this likely solve the problem, or would the power cable to the drive have to be physically disconnected?
