I have a drive connected via USB 2.0 It's newly formatted with 2 partitions. Running 10.5.6 on a macbook.
The drive seems to work fine, the problem is whenever I reboot the two drives don't mount in finder.
When I look in disk utility. I can see the drive listed but the partitions are not.
I have to manually unplug and re insert the drive for it to function correctly.
Would like to disable my external drive from automounting every time a user logs in. Added an /etc/fstab, but still automounts on login. I would like this drive to mount only when I choose to mount it.

I use this drive only to perform a bootable disk image of my hard drive at regular intervals using the CCC scheduler. The backups are performed only once a week. I would like that this backup drive not be mounted when I or anyone else logs in to the computer. It annoys me to hear the drive turning and vibrating until it spins down and seeing it's icon on the desktop. Is there any way to prevent automount of this particular drive? I know I can dismount it manually using Diskutil, but I want everything to be automated. Any clue as to whether CCC will mount it when needed if it is unmounted?

Having both of these OS installed as well as Xcode, this occupies a LOT of memory and there is very little else available. So, I have a 100 GB USB external drive. I am fairly new to the Mac and so need a little help. The USB port must be extremely sensitive. If anything barely touches the USB cord to the external drive, then Mac OS X cannot "see" the drive anymore and there is an error about properly ejecting a drive. The only way that I can get it to see the drive again is to boot into Windows Vista, restart and open Mac OS X again.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have an annoying problem when I start up my external hdd in OS X. Let's say the location for the disk is: /Volumes/disk A. Sometimes (often) after a reboot or just a restart of the external hdd in OSX the location becomes: /Volumes/disk A 1. The system adds a 1 to the location of the disk!?!? Torrents cannot found the location of existing downloads and it's the same with my usenet client. The only way I've managed to solve the problem is to try to restart osx + external hdd until the location becomes /Volumes/disk A again (or recheck ALL torrents to the new location). I haven't found any logic when it goes back to the original place yet so often it takes a while to get it right.

This is displaying on the desktop of my new iMac running Lion as an external Hard drive,also system preferences sees it as a start up source.My question is , is it safe to restart into Snow leopard without causing a kernel panic and if it does boot will it be fast enough to use as it as a USB drive.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have 5 external drives... They are Seagate and Western Digital Drives. The worst of the bunch is the Western Digital My Book Studio Edition (1TB) that I have connected via FW800. The 2nd worst offender is the Seagate 750GB Free Agent connected via FW400. The most dependable appears to be a Western Digital USB drive, but it's the slowest performer. The issue is this: I either have a freeze up that requires an unplug from the Mac as well as power, then re-mount to get working again, OR, when I start up the Mac, it just hangs at the 'apple' and never fully boots. I have to unplug the drives and boot, then plug them back in after the boot. It's getting very frustrating. Do you all have a successful setup with external drives?

I feel like I've tried hundreds from the Apple widget download page, but all reset themselves. It's not vital that I know how much bandwidth I use as I've got unlimited broadband, but it would be interesting to see how much I get through in a week/month/year. Is there a monitor that will allow you to view the bandwidth on an IP address you specify? I want to be able to monitor all traffic coming in and out of my router, but I can't find an App that does this either. All they monitor is my local IP address 192.XXX.XXX.XXX (Specific to my iMac). I have a static IP address with my broadband so can I monitor traffic flowing through that? Or would I just need to monitor the routers network and/or broadcast address?

when i clone my mac book pro (snow leopard os) hard drive using SUPER DUPER, the cloned external drive doesn't match the mac hd in gigabytes. my mac hd is max 250 gigabytes, my external drive clone is max 320. however the mac hd reads as 233.71 gb used, and the cloned ext. drive reads as 216.54 gb copied. shouldn't a cloned drive be exactly the same size as the original drive (mac hd) that's being cloned?

How would I go about backing-up the disk if the image doesn't appear under devices? I went to the "Restore" tab/button, but I can not choose the hard drive in the first field. I could have sworn my hard drive was formatted for Mac, but I may have formatted it back to FAT32. I know the disk still functions because when it is powered on, it cycles with/without being connected to my MacPro, but after that, it will only cycle if connected (confirming connection). It does run again when I connect the firewire cable. my mbp i7's double tap doesn't save when i set it to a certain "double-click speed" so when i put my mbp to sleep or restart it, i'm forced to go back to the settings and set my double-click speed again. The point of me doing this is because for some reason, my double-click doesnt register or hi-light the text in the URL or text in essays etc. when its set up to the fourth notch on the slide bar. so i have to put it down to 0 on the bar in order for my double tap to register. Its really annoying to have to redo this every time i come back to my mbp.

To free up space, I have moved my iMovie clips off to a secondary hard drive, but I have not seen my free disk space free up on my Macbook pro. Why is this? I moved, not copied the files. They only show now on the external hard drive. I am looking at the free space in Finder > Get Info. I have easily moved a few hundred GB off to the new drive, but my internal HD still shows as over 500Gb used.

I have latest iTunes 10.6.1 and its library located on external drive, connected by FW800.
System properties -> Energy saver -> Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible is On Everything works perfect in case of local access.
Also in case library's drive sleeps, it takes just several seconds more in order to wake drive. But remote access works only in case the drive is waked somehow. I.e. if Home Sharing is enabled and drive sleeps I cannot get access to the content from remote iTunes or Apple TV.
I think it is a bug, remote access shall be not broken in case the drive is sleeping. Also it is known, some forums explain that you shall never put external drives in sleep mode in case this drive used for iTunes Home Sharing [URL]

Odd stufff, I have a 500 gig Lacie ext HD that my user uses on her Vista machine...
I am setting up a replacement for the Vi$ta machine, which is a 24 inch imac.
I plugged in the ext HD and nothing happened after I powered on the ext HD.
I checked disk utility and it showed up but as a 2TB size ext HD...
I unplugged the Lacie and plugged it back in and all the info showed up correctly.
But ALL the buttons under "First Aid" are greyed out so I cant verify permissions, disk, or repair disk or permissions.

Every time I reboot my computer my external drives are all set to "read only". I have to eject them, and remount them and things are then fine again, but this is an annoying step and the fact that a reboot is causing them to switch to read-only is having me worried.
Anyone else have this problem/know of a solution?

I always unmount it but then when i restart, the volume is right there again. I was wondering if there was any way to disable it from automounting because I know I can just change which os I want to start up in with the "option" button. If there is a process, could someone be really specific cause I'm still quite new to the mac.

I am trying to install Ubuntu on Mac and for that I've created a bootable USB drive with Ubuntu on it. Now when I'm restarting my Mac and pressing Option key on keyboard, it is not giving me any option to boot from USB. I don't think its getting detcted even. USB is currently formatted in FAT format. Just wondering if there is any other format required?

I have resolved my MacPro sleep issue by removing the Seagate 320GB stock drive. For whatever reason, if that drive is plugged in, it reboots my MacPro when waking from sleep. I had setup 2 WD 500GB drives in RAID 0 as my boot volume and this was configured with Windows XP Pro for other uses.

Doing the standard upgrade install so I shove the SL disc in and run the installer, after an age it eventually reboots.
Then after another long wait the installer finally appears but when it asks to choose the drive to install to, my drive doesn't appear.
From the utilities menu, I can access disk utility and it only shows the DVD drive.
If I access system profiler my hard disk is still there in the SATA section.
Seems like I'm going to have format and do a clean install unless anyone has any ideas?
