Is there a way to disable the external monitor? I don't want to have to unplug it every time I want to disable it... There must be a way. What options do we have?
View 3 RepliesI started using my macbook pro with an external monitor in mirror mode but I can't seem to unplug the power when I'm in this state, it automatically goes to sleep. I want to be able to unplug my laptop when its fully charged since its recommended to do so to preserve the battery life...but it doesn't seem like I can when using it this way. Or is it really not that big of a deal to unplug your battery every time it's fully charged. Are Apply batteries doomed to poop out eventually no matter what? I suppose turning it off at the end of work day could recoup damage?
View 2 Replies View RelatedIs there an easy way to cause a connected external monitor to be "disabled?" E.G. I have an iMac connected to an LCD TV (via VGA, spanned, external at 1360x768). If the TV is plugged in, even if it's off, the computer switches to spanning mode. The consequence of this is that, if my preferred setup is to have the external be main, for instance, I essentially have to unplug it from the iMac whenever I don't want to be using it. Even if the external is the 2ary dsplay, it means that the mouse can go off the edge of the screen on one side, and that two of the hot corners are messed up. Is there any utility that could do something like add a "disable external display" item to preferences or the menu bar?
View 17 Replies View RelatedIs there a tweak out there that will disable the internal display while using an external monitor WITHOUT having to first close the lid on my macbook because I just leave my macbook plugged in for weeks a couple feet away from my desk and it's become a hassle to first close the lid, then move my mouse, then open the lid for better ventilation. I just want to leave it open and disable the display!
View 17 Replies View RelatedI have a 40" Samsung LCD HDTV - 1080p. I am aware that the Macbook is not made to output to such a large, high res display. However, when I use the mini-DVI to VGA adapter and, obviously, a VGA cable into my tv I get some weird results. (I have tried using DVI-HDMI but I have nonstop compatibility issues with the tv, so thats out of the question, VGA works fine and is good enough quality for me) When using the tv as a second monitor, it works without fault, as long as my Macbook is open and awake.

I know how to get the windows desktop over onto the external monitor, but windows just recognizes the monitor for a moment, and then nothing. This cycles until I turn off the external monitor. I have the new MacBook Pro, with MiniDisplay port, and the monitor is hooked up with a DVI, and it is a 22" Acer.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a 27" i7. I have a 24" DVI Montior hooked up to it via MDP->DVI adaptor. When the 24" Monitor is on, everything is fine. When I turn the monitor off, the magic mouse tracking on the 27" screen stutters. I am not kidding - it took me ages to figure out that to fix I either need to turn the other monitor on OR disconnect the MDP->DVI adaptor.

One exception seems to be the 27" model connected via mini-Display Port.However, I'd been hoping to connect an older (G4/DVI) Mini to a new (21.5") iMac, to use the iMac as a monitor.The only semi-hack solution I've seen is to use Screen Recycler or similar software. I have two questions, though:-Can Screen Recycler be used to mirror a desktop, not just extend it? (all info I've seen talks only about extending/2nd monitor, not mirroring).

View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter debating the need vs. want of the iMac and Mac Pro, I'm going to follow my brain and go with the iMac (27" i7) since I use it for work, though my work is in the business side of the music industry dealing more with email, spreadsheets and some minor music/photo/video editing (which is easily done for me via Apple`s iLife).
My real question is with the 3 external hard drives I want to buy - G Tech 1TB G Drives. I read about daisy chaining the drives, which sounds like a good idea. But am curious about it. Obviously if I have 3 external HDD's and want to use FW800 on all three of them, with only one FW800 on my computer, daisy chaining solves the problem. But in this set-up, what is the potential downside to this? Is there an upside or other reason(s) people daisy chain their drives, too?
I`ll use the iMac's HDD, of course. But I also need one HDD for work (important files, contracts, etc). One for personal (music, photo, video). And lastly, one as a back-up for the other HDD's.
What would my BEST and also cost effective option be? Buy 3 externals and daisy chain them? Use eSata (what would that entail)? Increased speed would be the only major plus I'm looking for with setting these HDD's up. Just not sure all my options...
But keep in mind I don`t need them to mirror each other. HDD 1 (iMac) has my minor importance stuff. HDD 2 has my work files and business stuff. HDD 3 is personal photos, videos and massive iTunes collection (300gb). And HDD 4 is a back-up of all the others. Raid seems to be not exactly what I need - perhaps overkill on cost, too. What do you think? Also, I know everyone has their taste in externals. I actually had great reliability in Western Digitals MyBook Studios, and My Passbooks. But some people I know had good time with the G Tech`s - aside from them looking cool.
I have found the past 4 weeks that my iMac will not respond to any mouse movement, keyboard, trackpad or pushing the power button every 5 days or so. I must unplug from the wall, replug into wall then push power button, then it boots up. I have had iMac for 9 months and has always just went to sleep and when I move mouse awakens. After I must unplug, it works correctly again for 5 to 6 days then must be unplugged again. Anyone know why this is happening as I do not believe any settings have been changed and I am the only user of this iMac.

I have the mini-dvi to vga converter and when I connect it to a external tv capable of 1024x768, the iMac freezes and does nothing. I disconnect and the screen turns blue and the flickers back on and everything works. I have made the connection then booted up, and I have tried every resolution all the way down to 640x480, same thing it just locks up the screen, but again as soon as I unplug the mini-dvi to vga cable from the iMac it flicks to a blue screen and everything comes back. I have reviewed dmesg nothing, and revieiw /var/log/messages. Is there any troubleshooting I can do. I am old school unix/linux guy just converted my family to Apple and would like to use the display on my tv to watch my iTunes movies.

but then goes dark. When an external monitor is attached the external monitor works perfectly fine -- the
only trouble being that the external monitor is not currently set to "mirror" so it is impossible to log in and access the machine. The IT dept at the institute has a monopoly on repair of computers and so the quick answer -- take it to Apple is not all that easy. Is there a way to:
1) set the iMac to mirror display upon booting up by some clever key combination?
2) set the machine to mirror by remote access and command line methods?
3) mirror by changing something using target mode?
4) or the obvious...somehow login using the real estate provided by the external monitor.
Also has anyone seen this problem with iMac displays? An Intel iMac I think 2.16 Intel Core 2 Duo processor running Tiger.
I heard this is possible, however will it be possible with a windows laptop ( dell e6400) It's a work laptop and wasn't sure If I could do this with some sort of adapter.

Is there any delay as compared to a standard monitor? I'm just thinking long term as the iMac becomes long in the tooth and we move on to new machines. Can the iMac still be used as a quick turn on monitor or do you need to load up both machines (and do you need to rely on all parts functioning in the iMac, such as mobo, hard drive, etc. still working) to utilize it as a monitor)?

Turning off the TV doesn't actually disable the monitor as I still have the OS thinking it's still on therefore spaces imitates it as being two monitors when its really only one. The main reason I want to disable it is to save my VRAM while I'm playing Source games on Steam.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been given (!) a G5 iMac which is practically brand new. It's only problem is that it suffers from the sudden shut off issue which seems to plague the G5 thanks to a faulty Power Supply and some caps on the mobo which get taken out by the PS. I've replace the power supply, but can't afford to get the mobo fixed, and since neither Apple nor any of the alternative operating system makers such as Linux will be supporting this system into the future, I figure that the hardware is essentially orphaned. I'd dearly like to use the screen though, as it's in great shape and is a beautiful display. So, my question is, can the internal screen be connected to an external source such as the video card of another computer? It would be great to use it for my music production machine. If anyone has any ideas, let me know. In the meantime I'm going to have a look around inside this beast and see what I can do.

I have an iMac (20", 2006 model, Intel Core Duo, etc.) that is in excellent, working condition...aside from the fact that it didn't like having its face smashed in. The screen is almost completely covered with the weird leaf-like pattern that forms in such situations...and is thus, unusable at this point.
Can anyone tell me, without a trace of doubt, if it is possible to hook up a new LCD monitor to the iMac and use the old, broken unit as a CPU? If so, what will I need? Has anyone actually done this?
Conversely, would I be better off simply selling the iMac for parts on eBay and putting the $$ toward a shiny new Mac?
I have just bought an external monitor to make a dual screen set up with my imac. So for the first time I am looking at the colour profiles. Would I be right in thinking that if I select profile "sRGB" on the external and "sRGB IEC61966-2.1" on the iMac then when I have the two screens side by side, the colours will match? I have using the Apple 'iMac' profile for two years and anything else just looks strange. What is the 'true' colour or is it just a matter of opinion? Which profile is nearest to real life?

I bought the mini-display port to dual link dvi adaptor for $99. However, it doesn't work from going from my pc to the imac or from my macbook pro to the imac. I find it retarded that they wouldn't even sell a working adapter.

I'm looking for a external monitor that is compairable in brightness as my iMac's screen. The brand needs to be Samsung, and the look of the Samsung moniter I would prefer to look like the examples below. Why? Because I want it to match my TV. I'm also looking for a small monitor because the space I have is pretty small and I dont want to have to move my iMac and look at it at a angle. I currently have a Samsung SyncMaster 906BW with a 1440 x 900 60hz resolution and its VERY dull compared to my iMac and its at 100% brightness and 85% contrast. Here are some of the screens I'm looking at so far, would they be close to as bright as my iMac's screen?
