Mac OS X Lion Server :: No External Access - 10.7?

May 23, 2012

I have Lion Server 10.7 running on a quad core mac server. Everything is working internally and I can access all the services etc. I have purchased a ssl certificate for the server. With all the correct port forwards in place (using a pfsense router) I can not get any external access to work no matter what I do. I have other servers behind this router and they all work. It seems to be just a OSX thing.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Disable Mission Control On Client Computers?

Apr 30, 2012

I want to be able to disable Mission Control for client computers.  We are a school with a 1:1 computer setup and it is too easy for the kids to swipe their desktop away when a teacher walks by. I know I could manually disable the gesture, but I can't disable to my knowledge by permissions and I would rather disable the whole thing all together.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Disable Sleep Button At Login Screen?

May 1, 2012

Is there a way to disable or hide the sleep button at the login screen? I am trying to send updates and/or commands from ARD.... But the end users are putting the computers to sleep by pressing the sleep button. This is causing the ARD updates/commands to fail. The computers and severs are all Lion OSX.  If I can disable the sleep button at login then I can send the updates/commands.  I normally only do the updates/commands when there is no user logged in.So I am not concerned with the case where the user is already logged in and puts the computer to sleep.  I have already setup an MCX in WGM for the Energy Saver.

Mac Pro :: How To Know About SAS Drives And Firewire Storage

Feb 25, 2009

If I decided to end up going for a Mac Pro with pure speed, I would want to fill it with 4 SAS drives. I've heard that SAS drives are completely unrivaled in speed (15,000 rpm ), but does this really correlate to high speeds? Is Apple's RAID card the best solution for SAS drives? I would likely use RAID 5 setup for striping benefits as well as data redundancy.

Now, I'm a bit of a storage junkie, and SAS drives won't be a viable storage solution for everything I have already (and even more in the future), so external storage would be a must. I have a drobo already, and it is a much cheaper solution than getting something like an Xserve RAID, and firewire 800 is plenty fast for streaming video, even to multiple sources.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: No External Drive Will Work Via Firewire

Mar 13, 2012

I am having a heck of a time trying to get either a brand new Lacie d2 Quadra OR a G-Tech G-Drive (both 2TB desktop models) to work on my iMac via the Firewire port. Mac is running 10.7.3, 2.8ghz Intel Core Duo.

Both drives are brand new out of the box.

When I connected them using Firewire they look like they mount, but they are unusable. They won't unmount if I try to reformat. Get error messages if I try to reformat, verify or disk repair. Messages say something about not being able to read some information. Keep in mind there's nothing on the drives. I have tried getting them to work with Time Machine with no luck. A few times it would backup for several hours only to give an error message and crash. Something is clearly wrong when I use Firewire.

But when I connect using USB? Voila! No problems at all. Repair, formatting, storage, etc. all work fine.

What the heck is it with Firewire? I am dealing with slow transfer speeds for now, but I'd really like to have them connected via Firewire and off my USB ports.

I have zapped the PRAM and permission module to no avail. Not sure what else can be done.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Set Up To Access File Remotely

May 31, 2012

Ok, this may sound stupid, so here goes. I have always worked for companies that had all of our files on a server. Because of this server I was able to work from home on many occasions. I now have my own design company and want to set up a server in my home that I can access remotely from my office. I don't have the faintest idea where to start. I have purchased the mac mini server (I want a dedicated computer for the server) but what's next? I have a domain name, web hosting and dedicated IP. What else do I need to get to set this up? I am pretty good with computers, I just don't have a clue what I need to make this happen.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Limit File Access For Different Users In 10.7.4?

Jun 18, 2012

We had everything working perfectly with an earlier version of Lion Server. The update to 10.7.3, or 4, seems to have opened access to all files for all users. Much to our surprise, this wide-open access started without warning.

- We have an external drive that contains all of the company's archives

- We had set access for one employee to get to the files he needs, and different access for another employee. Neither saw sharepoints outside of their access settings.

After an update, each employee can see and log in to all sharepoints. There doesn't seem to be a way to limit access for each employee now. I can set 'read' access for one employee, but it doesn't stop the other employee from accessing that sharepoint/folder.

OS X :: Setting Up My Mac Pro As Server Storage?

Jan 10, 2010

I'd like to get them properly set up and organized. My first goal is to work from ONE main computer, I've juggled too many computers and I want to simplify my set up. My 15" MBP will be my work/pleasure, use everywhere computer.I'd like to set up my Mac Pro to work similar to the HP Media Center. I want an 'always on' computer/server for working files, downloads, back up etc. Some suggest I buy an HP media server, it's ready to go out of the box, comes with a url for web access etc. But, I'd rather set up my Mac Pro to for this purpose.I have two video cards in the Mac Pro so I'm going to hook one up to my 24" ACD and get an adapter to HDMI so I can run directly to my 65" Panasonic TV as well.
* Or can I do this wirelessly, I realize I can, but am confused on the best way to go about it.

MacBook Pro :: Cannot Access PC Shared External USB HD With Lion

Apr 8, 2012

I have a PC on my network that has a secondary internal hard drive and an external USB 2.0 hard drive that are both shared on the network. From my MacBook Pro with Lion, I have no problem accessing the C and second internal drives, but cannot access the USB external drive from the Mac. I have no problem accessing the external drive from my 2 other PC's on the network. The external drive has the exact same sharing settings as every other internal drive on my network.

All PC's are running Windows 7 and this is a home network. I don't have any servers or anything running. I just set up basic file sharing so that I can access any drive of any PC from any other computer on my network. The Mac just says "The operation can't be completed because the original item for "T" can't be found." when trying to access the external. Lastly, the Mac is on wifi, not ethernet.

OS X :: How To Disable User Access To Folders

Nov 14, 2009

I am currently setting up a few iMacs for my computer lab.

I use the Parental Controls to freeze the dock and to restrict the use of applications to only specific ones, and it's all working great.

It would just be great to have a way to restrict access to the "Library" folder in the "User" folder, as well as the "Developer", "Library", and "System" folders at the "Macintosh HD" level. I know using the permissions is not possible, and all the monitoring apps I've seen only enable you to restore the account and see what's been done and moved around.

So I am looking for a way to disable user access to those folders, so that when they try to open them they get a message saying they can't access it, just like in the windows-based computer labs.

OS X Server V10.4 :: How To Gain Access To Files On A 10.4.11 Server

Jun 13, 2012

I recently attained a new client for IT support, and they have a xserve running Mac 10.4.11, for which the previous IT company supporting it did not give them the admin password. Also they don't have any restore discs of any kind. What I would like to do is wipe the server and upgrade to the newest version, because currently there are only two people touching the server, so now would be an optimal time to do the upgrade before it increases to more. But my main concern is getting access to the files of other users on the server so that I can copy them to an external hard drive, (i'm from the PC environment so essentially taking ownership of the files). What is the best way for me to do this in the Mac world?

The other thing I wanted to know is this server with the following specs, is even sufficient to support the newest version:  [code]

OS X Server :: How To Disable File Permissions In Mac

Dec 31, 2008

I recently started working for a web design company, we use a Mac G5 Tower with Leopard Server installed. What I need to do is, if at all possible, disable file permissions so that anyone on the network can make changes to a file without having to change the permissions first. Right now, after a file is created the permissions have to be changed to allow everyone else to make changes if needed. Is there a way to disable file permissions in order to avoid this problem altogether? I personally run Linux, as such I am not a Mac guru so any help will most likely need to be in basic terms so I don't get lost.
