View 1 RepliesMy new external harddrive (Buffalo MiniStation) is not showing in finder. I've checked that the correct finder view options are set (i.e. show show external drives). I can see the drive in Disk Utility and it will mount. Also when i try to open a downloaded .dmg file I get the 'no mountable file systems' error.
The drive is fine as it works on another MBP.
I've reinstalled Lion but still no join.

I've read a few threads in here but it's still not clear for me what the limitations of a NAS really are.
What I'm looking for: storage that will be easily accessible for the 2 computers on our wireless (router) network.
Will any NAS do this? Any recommended brands? And, more importantly: can I treat a NAS drive exactly like a regular drive?
I just purchased two 2TB Western Digital MyBook Studio hard drives (from Apple) to store raw video content on. We have one Mac Pro for video editing but the rest of the office uses Windows XP.
How can I format these hard drives so they will be accessible on both OS10.4 and Windows XP? We want the full 2TB of each HD to be in one partition. Should I do the formatting on the Mac or on the PC?
I recently upgraded my MacBook Pro to Yosemite. The iCloud Drive shows up in the sidebar, but I am not able to access it. It is accessible on my other MacBook Pro. Is it not possible to have the same iCloud Drive on two different computers then?

I have an elderly Q950 with an external hard drive with everything backed up onto it. The external drive is a Micronet ADV1000E, with a sticker on the back saying it's Macintosh or PC compatible. I also have an iBook laptop, & PC Dell Inspiron 1300 laptop. As I have the 2 laptops, the Quadra hadn't been switched on for maybe one year. On the weekend I tried to get it to boot up (with & without the external drive switched on), but all it does is display a grey screen with an image of a 3.5" disk with a '?' in the middle. If I start up from a Norton 3.5" disk it still can't find the external or internal drive. If I try booting up with my finger in the shift key it doesn't want to know.
1. Any idea why the Quadra isn't seeing either the external or internal drive & what can I try to do?
2. Is there any way I can connect my external drive to either my iBook or Dell? At the moment I have no cables to connect the old & new - are cables available & if so any idea where from? I've looked high & low but so far no joy.
3. Is it possible to remove the hard drive from the Quadra or the external drive & put in an external drive enclosure, then connect that to either laptop? I see there are drive enclosures available which are Mac & pc compatible. This by the way would be a major undertaking for me. I'm by no means a computer dunce but would be wary of trying it.
I've found plenty of articles on how to get Time Machine to backup TO a network drive, however I have the opposite problem; I have a Windows machine on my network, with some shared folders, and I'd like to back-up their contents using Time Machine on my Mac since it has plenty of space, without having to copy their contents somewhere first if possible.
However, Time Machine only lets you choose what to exclude, it doesn't let you specify special sources to backup. I was thinking a symbolic link from /Volumes, but I've no idea where to point it to. A second relevant question as well would be; how do I get OS X to automatically connect to a Windows share when it's available? The Windows machine isn't always on when I start up my Mac, but I don't want to have to manually connect all the time
I have performed these steps: create test account with user name testcreate test folder on an external HDchanged home folder for the user to the test folder on the ext. HD using Advanced Options under Users & Groups.rebooted
I have observed that any user can see content of test/Documents and ls -l shows that the current user is the owner.
So for example if there is an account Frank, Frank can see the content of test/Documents and Frank is shown as an owner.
Cable Modem to Linksys router (acting as a switch/spliter)
Linksys router has the airport express plugged into it and a mybook external hard drive
I can not see the external hard drive on the network. When I hook it to my computer via ethernet cables I see the drive fine. But, when I hook it to my network I can't see it. It only has ethernet hook up capability. I downloaded the new firmware from apple for the airport express and that didn't help.
I'm going to have a new iMac arriving soon, and I want to think about possibly implementing a central network solution for backing up both of my Macs. I would get a Time Capsule except that I just recently got an expensive Netgear dual band router. I wouldn't mind having one that will do RAID 1 for additional security. The one I've seen is the WD Mybook World Edition (2 or 4 TB) which has two drives and uses RAID 1. However, I've seen complaints about it being slow despite using Gigabit Ethernet. So basically what I'm looking for is a drive with:
1. 2 or 4 TB in two disks
2. RAID 1
3. Gigabit ethernet or possibly wireless N.
What I DON'T want is a server; I just want a drive that attaches to the network.
I run a small home network with mostly Windows computers but now with my new Mac Mini included. Right now I am backing up two of the computers separately and a few not at all. I am looking into a networking backup hard drive such as a Seagate Black Armor or WD World Edition.
My question is whether I can backup all the computers on the network or if the Mac will not be backed up because of the different hard drive formats on the computers.
If the network backup drive is foratted using NTFS, will it be able to backup and restore to the Mac as necessary. Will the Mac be able to read/write to the network backup drive as necessary?
Very new wth mac. Got my first power mac G5 running OS x 10.5.8. I want to add second hard drive. I took the 320GB hard drive out of my Dish Network HD DVR receiver. Tried to erase the data from the drive by using Disk Utility and did not go through. It detect the drive but show 0 byte. Does anyone know what can I do?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have purchased a 750 gig Firewire hard drive and have created several partitions on the drive for Time Machine, my iTunes library and other things. I would like to make some of these partitions able to be seen from another machine on the same network. For example my iMac would have the drive mounted and my MacBook Pro would be able to back up to this drive from the network. Is this possible, both machines are running 10.5.3..

I would like to be able to access my external hard drive [s] wirelessly. I currently have three external drives, and I would also like to print wirelessly [which may be a problem because I have the Epson 595 ].
What would you recommend I purchase to make this work? Do I need a second laptop to run as a 'server' or can I just get something like the AEBS or can I use my existing Linksys router somehow?
Can I backup my Itunes library to a network hard drive?

I have a MacBook pro. I want to store media on an external hard drive. Can I connect my G Drive external hard drive to my existing home network? I have AT&T internet provider, and their modem (residential gateway) only has ethernet ports.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI want to be able to run the apps installed on my pc. I have been told that it's already possible to convert the internal drive containing everything to a new housing turning it into an external drive to use with a new pc.... But I don't want to buy another pc... this time the switch is to a Macpro. I'm expecting to run mac apps and run bootcamp or parallels ( or both ). Could I connect the converted pc harddrive (basically it turns into an external pc harddrive) to the macpro and run the applications that are installed on the now external harddrive?

Have a new 3T external hard drive (mac/pc compatible). There is a USB connection on back of Verizon router. Connected hard drive there.
I don't know how to "see" the hard drive from the MacBook Pro?
Earlier I connected the drive to both Macs. The main Mac used Disk Utility and partitioned/formatted as MS dos (so windows can use, too). Was able to complete TimeMachine backup.
Now I want to use the hard drive through the router so the Macs (and windows pc) can backup/access the hard drive.
How do I do this? Where on the Mac do I enable or set up?
Or, do I set it up via the router's settings?
I'm not knowing where to begin. Router is working fine. Can access internet.
I am trying to simultaneously connect a FireWire HDD to my MBP (running SL) and a PPC G4 (Tiger). It has 2 FW ports but it will not let me mount on both desktops. As I recall, there was a way to easily do this?

The last few weeks it's been acting up, it's been really hard to connect and it usually takes a few trys, it transfers files REALLY slow, slower than normal and sometimes it doesnt even transfer them, it just stops about halfway through.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a home network running 3 PC's(with XP) and 2 Macs (with Tiger OS X 10.4.8). Mysteriously one of my Macs(MacMini) refuses to show a Network icon in the Finder sidebar? I have used the Go > Network menu to try to get a Network icon, but this does work. Yesterday I did a scheduled Mac OS system update, and it seems that since then I have not been able to see/get a Network icon in my Finder.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? PS - I am able to use the old 'GO > Connect to Computer' method, then type in the smb://myOfficePc, and access shared files on other PCs on the network. So networking is configured properly on this MacMini.
Basically what I wanna know is: Can I configure time machine to back up to a hard disk that is connected to my router? I guess essentially I'm trying to make a homemade time capsule. Is this possible and if so, how?

All the tutorials I've read say to create a sparsebundle file with the same name as the one that's found in the folder of your Time Machine backup.

I have a Powerbook G4. It doesn't have an internal wireless card so I bought a Linksys wireless adapter to plug into the side of my computer when I first got the computer. It worked fine for years. I recently reformatted the hard drive and now when I insert the wireless adapter it no longer will allow me to connect to the internet. I'm aware that Linksys doesn't have drivers for Mac users so I'm confused as to how I got it to work in the first place. I don't remember installing any third party software, but I may have, it was a few years ago. Does anyone have any suggestions what I should do to allow me to use my linksys card in my Mac? I've heard of Orangeware but I'm not sure if that's the solution. The adapter is a WPC54G
Oh one last thing, when I plug the card in, an icon appears in the top right corner that shows something is plugged into the port but doesn't allow me to click on it and search for wireless connections.
I'm looking for a way to connect an external bus-powered Firewire 800 hard drive (Glyph Portagig 800) to an iMac which only has Firewire 400 ports, and still powering the drive through just the Firewire connector.
All I've found are Firewire 400 to 800 adapters, allowing Firewire 400 peripherals to be connected to computers having only Firewire 800 ports. I need the opposite of course.
Where can I get such adapters, and without sacrificing bus-power?
