I have a MacBook pro. I want to store media on an external hard drive. Can I connect my G Drive external hard drive to my existing home network? I have AT&T internet provider, and their modem (residential gateway) only has ethernet ports.Â

I run a small home network with mostly Windows computers but now with my new Mac Mini included. Right now I am backing up two of the computers separately and a few not at all. I am looking into a networking backup hard drive such as a Seagate Black Armor or WD World Edition.
My question is whether I can backup all the computers on the network or if the Mac will not be backed up because of the different hard drive formats on the computers.
If the network backup drive is foratted using NTFS, will it be able to backup and restore to the Mac as necessary. Will the Mac be able to read/write to the network backup drive as necessary?
I just upgraded to a new MacBook Pro as some of you saw in a recent post. My external hard drive is connected to a 400 firewire port but the new mbp's have 800 firewire ports. I have an adapter but for some reason the external doesn't show up. It works on my old macbook but not on this new one, doesn't even show up in the disk utilities. Do the fire wire ports have to match up in speed? Can my backup and the files be saved?

Here is our setup:
HP printer is shared, but is connected via USB to a Dell desktop. I have successfully been able to print from my Dell laptop through our home's wireless network. Both the Dell desktop and laptops are on Vista.
I've had my hard drive re partitioned today and all my data was dragged onto an external hard drive. connect the drive & use migration assistant to transfer everything. I understand I could drag and drop files but I want everything to be done properly through migration assistant but it won't pick up the external drive , however it's files are accessible through finder. Migration assistant just constantly gives me the message, 'looking for computer'. Â

I am using IMac late 2011 model core i5 4gb ram. I recently bought seagate freeagent goflex desk 2tb version and I am using it as time machine. but when it is connected system is freezing frequently and some times I am getting kernel panic error but after disconnecting it IMac runs smoothly I used my system with out connecting for few days and there is no problem at all but when i am connecting and using it all this happens again. Another thing i am also using freeagent goflex portable drive for last one year and I did not experienced such problems at all.

I can not see the external hard drive on the network. When I hook it to my computer via ethernet cables I see the drive fine. But, when I hook it to my network I can't see it. It only has ethernet hook up capability. I downloaded the new firmware from apple for the airport express and that didn't help.
I am looking at getting an airport extreme along with an external hard drive. My idea is to use the external hard drive as network storage along with a time machine drive for my MacBook Pro. Is it possible to partition the external drive with one partition being for network storage and the other for time machine?
I am trying to figure out how to automatically connect a MacBook to a network drive after connecting to the wireless network that the drive is connected to.
Here is the situation:
I back-up my wife's MacBook via Time Machine to an external hard drive that is connected to my Apple desktop. It works great! I even have her system setup to automatically mount the drive upon log-in. Unfortunately, after leaving our wireless signal and then coming back the time machine drive isn't automatically mounted since she isn't "logging back-in". Is there an automator script that can be built to automatically connect to drive X after connecting to wireless network Z?

So I just bought a SimpleTech Simple Drive 60gb to use on my MacBook with Mac OS X 10.4.11. I followed the instructions and plugged the Mini-B part of the USB cable in the hard drive and the other end of the USB plug in my MacBook. View 6 Replies View RelatedRecently I bought 2 identical WD Scorpio Blue 1TB hard drives for my macbook pro 13 inch 2010. My aim is to replace the internal hard drive with one of the two I just purchased and use it as my system drive with Lion, Windows and Data partitions. And for the other hard drive I want to use it as a full disk back up for the internal drive (now 1TB hard drive). After I was done with setting up both windows and mac and data transfer, when I booedt into the recovery partition from the internal drive to clone the drive to the external drive, the disk utility gave me this error (Could not validate source - error 254). I also tried using Carbon Copy Cloner but it only could clone partitions, not the entire drive. Yesterday I downloaded a copy of Clonezilla. It worked fine until it had to clone an exFAT partition (my data partition). The exFAT partition appeared as 'RAW' partition in clonezilla. As a result, the whole partition appeared to be full and clonezilla had to copy every single blocks of data in that partition and the estimated time remaining was about 30 hours. So clonezilla is out too. Just want to ask if there is any program/application (bootable or not) which allows can do a full disk clone to an external hard drive.

I am on an intel 20" imac with a 250GB HD using iLife 09. I am back from a vacation with the family and realize that I can't import any video to my imac because the HD has no more space. To get some space back I am currently doing the following: Going through old video footage and trashing all video I never used in a project. If I attach an external HD can I can I download raw footage on this and then edit with imovie through the external? s there anything anyone else suggests? This is more than the total of everything I have on the drive other than that. Time Machine has always been setup on an external drive and when searching all files on the Macbook there is nothing for backup files so don't know where it is coming from.

I have a NAS hard wired to a wireless router. The Mac sees all the folders and files just fine and can read/write. I have a Vista Home Premium PC hard wired to the same wireless router. The Users Folder is shared with full privileges as are the individual users folders. The firewall is off. It runs no "security software". The Mac can see the Vista PC and also see the Users individual account folders but when I open them I can't see any of the files. I really don't know what direction to go. The Vista PC networked fine with an older Toshiba laptop that the Mac replaced.

with cloning/copying the content one an external hard drive onto a new external hard drive. Basically, I have a 500GB FW400 drive which I use to store my media files. It's full, so I purchased a 1TB FW800 drive to replace it. Obviously, I thought I could simply copy and paste the media files from the old drive to the new one.I cannot copy the media files to my internal drive first as my internal drive is only 250GB and nearly full itself.I have used Disk Utility to attempt to close the old drive to the new drive, but keep getting "insufficient space" errors.
