Basically what I wanna know is: Can I configure time machine to back up to a hard disk that is connected to my router? I guess essentially I'm trying to make a homemade time capsule. Is this possible and if so, how?

All the tutorials I've read say to create a sparsebundle file with the same name as the one that's found in the folder of your Time Machine backup.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI am in need of assistance with backing up my macbook pro using time machine. I am running Mac OS X leopard 10.5.8. I have attempted to backup to a network share folder on a Windows machine, but the backup abruptly ends. So, I decided to attach an NTFS external drive, connected via usb. The external drive was formatted on a Windows 7 machine (not quick format); so, it currently has no space occupied. I installed MacFuse and NTFS-3G. Then, I rebooted and attached the NTFS external drive. I set the preferences in time machine to backup to the aforementioned drive. However, Console is reporting that the backup failed with error 19, and time machine is reporting that the storage location for backups cannot be found, when i command time machine to backup now.
Is there something I'm missing? I have seen at least one other thread on the Internet where a mac user was able to get time machine to work with an NTFS external hard drive. Do I need to create a separate sparse bundle image and copy it to the external drive, similar to the method used to get time machine to copy to network shares on Windows? If the ironclad rule is time machine ONLY recognizes HFS+ drives, then a sparse bundle image is a good workaround. But then what is the point of MacFUSE and NTFS-3G. What is its purpose, as it relates to time machine?
I have just set up an external hard drive to my wireless router and am now wanting to set up Time Machine to back up to the hard drive. I can see the hard drive in Finder and can even send files to it manually. I just don't see in setting up Time Machine any option to backup to that hard drive.Â

Is time machine already/still supported on current OSX 10.7, or is it already deprecated as it was introduced several releases ago? When I try to activate Time Machine on my all new OS X Server, I get a dialog "Choose destination volume for client Time Machine backups:". I choose a volume, and the message is displayed "This disk drive may not support Time Machine backup over the network. Get more information about compatible drives."
"More information" links to [URL] which just provides commonplace advice to not disconnect drives while the drive is in operation. The support article is marked as archived and no longer updated after 10.5. The promised information is not provided. Is there anything obviously wrong with the setup?

External drive: 3TB USB3 Maxtor, single partition (repartitioned for GUID), connected via one of the internal USB2
The external drive is also used as Time Machine for the Server's local volume. I have read recommendations to use separate partitions per client, for time machine solutions using a third party NAS. Instead I chose the original - am I wrong to assume that the OS X Server's Time Machine service is able to manage multiple clients?

I ran installer then went to disk utility and pushed disk repair. it ran and indicated in green that no repairs were necessary. i then went to startup disk and only the Diks and network startup showed up but no hard drive. i also open computer to make sure was not wet muddy due to leak in cooling system but all was dry

I have a USB disk attached to my Airport Extreme, and use it as the target of my time machine backups from my mac book pro (connected via WiFi). For the most part things work fine. But if my macbook goes to sleep, after it wakes up it often (not always) gets the next time machine backup to fail with a message saying that it cannot access the disk. At first I found a brutal method of correcting it: I would disconnect from WiFi, go to my AE and power cycle it. After it came back the macbook never had any problem with the disk. A little more exploration indicated that Lion wasn't unmounting the disk properly. The following works (but sometimes requires a few iterations): I'll go to finder, eject the disk, and disconnect from Airport Extreme, and then go to the terminal and do sudo diskutil unmountdisk disk1 (I first do a diskutil list to find out the right disk)Â
and then ask time machine to backup again. Many times I have to repeat this a few more times before it "takes". Has anyone else run into this? It clearly looks like a bug in Lion, since it never happened until I upgraded.Â
PS. I understand that Apple says that they don't support time machine backup to network disks. But they do to a time capsule! It isn't really different.

I have a Drobo external drive array connected by firewire to my primary home computer - a Mac Pro. the last year I've backed up two Macbook Pros (mine and my wife's) to this Drobo using Time Machine (The Mac Pro is always on and the laptops backup through the home network, through the Map Pro, to the Drobo). I recently did a fresh reinstall of Lion to all 3 computers. Now for some reason Time Machine can't kick the backup off. It gives me a "Can't backup - the backup drive us not available," or something like that.
A couple of key points:
* Through the primary computer, I have opened read/write file sharing permissions for all drives, including the FW connected Drobo
* From the laptops, I can see and read/write to the Drobo through Finder
* Through Time Machine preferences, I can select the Drobo as a backup destination - it's only when I kick off the backup that I run into the error.
* If I create a test admin account to try, I get the same problem when trying to back up.
* As a safegard, I have run a manual backup successfully to a separate external drive (mobile g-drive)
I've been using a 500gb external usb drive with Time Machine for some time now. I recently bought an Airport Extreme router so I could move all of my external drives onto my network. The idea was to continue using the 500gb drive with TM, just over the network. But TM wanted to start all over like it had never used the drive before now that it was on the network. So I reformatted the drive and let TM do its thing but at the end of the 1st backup it said it had failed. Is there a way to get that 1st huge backup over with? Can I plug the usb drive into my computer and then move it over to the network and get it to pick up where it left off?

1 Has any done this with a terastation. Or other backup device not defaultl seen by time machine.
2 Also lets say if I use the terastation, an I have a folder called enterprise (for all pc's), an one called "back up", if I choose backup, is it possible for time machine to delete enterprise folder? Or somehow mess up the folder, because time machine says "Note: Time Machine works best if you use your backup disk only for Time Machine backups. If you keep files on your backup disk, Time Machine won't back up those files, and the space available for Time Machine backups will be reduced."

I have TC and wish to establish it is my router. Into it will be plugged a PC running Vista (trust me...it's gone in four months to be replace by an iMac!). I have a Macair that will link up wirelessly. Currently I'm running a home network through a Netgear DG834GB and connectivity is good.
My DSL service comes from Deutshe Telekom via a DSL spliter. Therefore, I suspect the Netgear is working as my router and DSL modem.
My initial trials of setting up the TC as a stand-alone router and through the Netgear have been a failure.
1) Can I run the TC as a stand alone router connected to the DSL splitter or do I require the Netgear as my modem?
2) If I need the Netgear, I need someone to walk me through the steps to configure the TC to operate via Ethernet connected to the Netgear.
I was wondering if it is possible to back up using time machine to a network drive such as [URL] If so could you tell me how to do so?

My home network consists of Linksys WRT54G wireless Router; Iomega network hard drive (attached to router); Dlink DPR1260 wireless print server connected to Brother HL5140 printer & Epson RX680 printer; and numerous windows PCs (wireless).
My MBP recognizes the network hard drive folders. When I go to set up Time Machine, it keeps looking for a device hooked into it, but does not search for or see other potential back up locations. How do I set up Time Machine to regular back things up to a folder on my network storage drive?
whenever I run Time Machine on my PowerBook G4 (1.5 Ghz / 1Gb RAM / OSX 10.5.8) it will eat up GB's of hard disk space while 'preparing the backup'. After that it finishes the backup, but I don't get the space back. I'm talking about the internal HD, not the external target disk of course. For almost the last year I have been using an Airport Extreme on 2.4b/g and and Airport express in my room to extend my wireless network. I also have a usb hdd configured to back up my macbook using time machine. Well I have a new roommate moving in and he has his own extreme and two expresses.
I have some questions on what would be the best way to consolidate our networking devices. I considered us selling our extremes and getting the new time capsule so both of our macs can use 5ghz while my girlfriends dell uses the 2.4.

I have a 2006 macbook 2 GHz, upgraded to 4 gb ram and 160 HDD. I don't feel like i have enough space so i decided to purchase a new harddrive and decided a 500 GB would do me just fine Though, i have all my data on this harddrive. I was thinking on making a full disk Time Machine copy of my disk and then restoring the new harddisk with that copy. But i don't know where to place that copy, since it is like 130 GB which is quite a big archive.

View 1 Replies View RelatedThis is the second time it has happened, the first was with a powered USB Hard Disk, this time with a WD Elements HD. The first time, it crashed and popped up an alert saying the machine needed to be restarted.After restarting it continued, then around half way through it crashed again.It then would not boot as it said the Mac Mini's HD was corrupted.Tried to repair using the recovery mode, with no joy.Reformatted Hard Disk, went to recover using online recovery, got a 6002F error and it wouldn't reinstallTook to apple service centre, they wanted to charge to reinstall the OS (put them straight on that ).Â
Now it looks like it's doing it again, this time after the first crash I'm just copying the files I need manually to the external Hard Disk, which so far is OK.Â

I want to be able to use it as a network time machine drive. Both laptops are running snow leopard. I was wondering is this possible and if so, how can I do it. Currently I am able to see the desktop and the external hardrive on my network from the macs, and I am able to drag and drop onto them, however I want to be able to use time machine.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo I have a 15" MBP running Snow Leopard and have recently installed a Western Digital MyBook 1TB World Edition on the network to serve as my Time Machine backup drive. Most of the time, it works flawlessly and OSX / Time Machine does its thing and backs up.
Every once in a while, Time Machine says backup has been delayed because it cannot locate the network drive. This when I can easily access the network drive from other machines on the network, and also from my MBP in Finder. It's just Time Machine that somehow fails to find that drive. When I enter Time Machine preferences and look for the drive, it brings it up immediately and asks me for the username and pwd and viola ... it's up and running again.
