OS X Mavericks :: How To Connect And Use USB Hard Drive To Router
Sep 8, 2014
Using Mavericks on main MacBook Pro and Snow Leopard on second MacBook Pro. (another user in house with windows laptop, but for now really need to get the Macs going on this)
Have a new 3T external hard drive (mac/pc compatible). There is a USB connection on back of Verizon router. Connected hard drive there.
I don't know how to "see" the hard drive from the MacBook Pro?
Earlier I connected the drive to both Macs. The main Mac used Disk Utility and partitioned/formatted as MS dos (so windows can use, too). Was able to complete TimeMachine backup.
Now I want to use the hard drive through the router so the Macs (and windows pc) can backup/access the hard drive.
How do I do this? Where on the Mac do I enable or set up?
Or, do I set it up via the router's settings?
I'm not knowing where to begin. Router is working fine. Can access internet.

I have a WD Mybook Essential Edition external hard drive that is dedicated to the Mac that I am trying to connect through USB to my Linksys router (WRT 610N).
I have spent no less than 14 hours on the phone with Linksys, can't get through to Western Digital, and Applecare tells me they don't work with PC hardware.

I bought a Seagate 1TB USB HDD from Amazon. It says works with windows on the box but I wanted to use it to store and share files over my network via the readyshare feature on my Netgear router.
Is it not possible to use this product with a mac? Are there any recommendations as to HDDs suitable for my purpose?

Basically what I wanna know is: Can I configure time machine to back up to a hard disk that is connected to my router? I guess essentially I'm trying to make a homemade time capsule. Is this possible and if so, how?

I have just set up an external hard drive to my wireless router and am now wanting to set up Time Machine to back up to the hard drive. I can see the hard drive in Finder and can even send files to it manually. I just don't see in setting up Time Machine any option to backup to that hard drive.

I just built a PC that actually works. However, I was really cheap and didn't wanna buy a wireless access card, thinking I could connect to an extra router and use this router to connect to my other router that's network enabled. Is this possible, and if so, how would I go about doing it? I tried googling it, but I dunno what this is called.

I have an elderly Q950 with an external hard drive with everything backed up onto it. The external drive is a Micronet ADV1000E, with a sticker on the back saying it's Macintosh or PC compatible. I also have an iBook laptop, & PC Dell Inspiron 1300 laptop. As I have the 2 laptops, the Quadra hadn't been switched on for maybe one year. On the weekend I tried to get it to boot up (with & without the external drive switched on), but all it does is display a grey screen with an image of a 3.5" disk with a '?' in the middle. If I start up from a Norton 3.5" disk it still can't find the external or internal drive. If I try booting up with my finger in the shift key it doesn't want to know.
1. Any idea why the Quadra isn't seeing either the external or internal drive & what can I try to do?
2. Is there any way I can connect my external drive to either my iBook or Dell? At the moment I have no cables to connect the old & new - are cables available & if so any idea where from? I've looked high & low but so far no joy.
3. Is it possible to remove the hard drive from the Quadra or the external drive & put in an external drive enclosure, then connect that to either laptop? I see there are drive enclosures available which are Mac & pc compatible. This by the way would be a major undertaking for me. I'm by no means a computer dunce but would be wary of trying it.

I want to be able to run the apps installed on my pc. I have been told that it's already possible to convert the internal drive containing everything to a new housing turning it into an external drive to use with a new pc.... But I don't want to buy another pc... this time the switch is to a Macpro. I'm expecting to run mac apps and run bootcamp or parallels ( or both ). Could I connect the converted pc harddrive (basically it turns into an external pc harddrive) to the macpro and run the applications that are installed on the now external harddrive?

My external hard drive (Seagate 1tb) will not connect to my macbook. The last few weeks it's been acting up, it's been really hard to connect and it usually takes a few trys, it transfers files REALLY slow, slower than normal and sometimes it doesnt even transfer them, it just stops about halfway through.

My problem is that i cannot find the external hard drive which is connected to the iMac. I tried to assign the external storage as shared folder. That didnt work. I tried to make alias and drop it in the public folder. it does not work either.

I have a Powerbook G4. It doesn't have an internal wireless card so I bought a Linksys wireless adapter to plug into the side of my computer when I first got the computer. It worked fine for years. I recently reformatted the hard drive and now when I insert the wireless adapter it no longer will allow me to connect to the internet. I'm aware that Linksys doesn't have drivers for Mac users so I'm confused as to how I got it to work in the first place. I don't remember installing any third party software, but I may have, it was a few years ago. Does anyone have any suggestions what I should do to allow me to use my linksys card in my Mac? I've heard of Orangeware but I'm not sure if that's the solution. The adapter is a WPC54G
Oh one last thing, when I plug the card in, an icon appears in the top right corner that shows something is plugged into the port but doesn't allow me to click on it and search for wireless connections.

I'm looking for a way to connect an external bus-powered Firewire 800 hard drive (Glyph Portagig 800) to an iMac which only has Firewire 400 ports, and still powering the drive through just the Firewire connector.
All I've found are Firewire 400 to 800 adapters, allowing Firewire 400 peripherals to be connected to computers having only Firewire 800 ports. I need the opposite of course.
Where can I get such adapters, and without sacrificing bus-power?

I have a late 2009 iMac with Firewire 800 input on the back. I have a Western Digital Passport external hard drive with USB Micro-B input that I would like to connect to the Firewire (4 USB inputs aren't nearly enough on the iMac). I can't find an adapter to do this. As an alternative, is there an adapter that will convert the Firewire 800 to standard USB2.0?

I have used a Samsung HX 1Tb external hard drive under OSX Snow Leopard with absolutely no problem. Since I upgraded to the free (improved?!?) OSX Mavericks my Macbook Pro cannot "see" my hard drive. All I get when I plug it in is the following message -
my MacBook thinks that the hard drive is formatted for windows - but why should it work OK under Snow Leopard but not with Mavericks? I don't want to simply reformat the external drive because I'll lose all the files stored on it.Is there suitable software/Apps that I can use to let my Mac access this external hard drive.Incidentally my partners new Macbook Air can still read this hard drive.
