Sep 12, 2009You've probably heard that SL is measuring 1GB as 1000MB, instead of the proper 1024MB.
Is there any way to change this back?

OS X :: Menu Font Sizes In Snow Leopard?
Sep 11, 2010The menu (the top menu bar, "right click" menu etc) fonts are WAY too big. I downloaded TinkerTool and already lowered the size of all the fonts it let me, looked around the settings in the OS itself but I can't seem to touch the menu font sizes at all.

Dec 9, 2009In windows you can select multiple folders and right click and check the size of all the folders combined, on my mac, when I have multiple folders selected and GET INFO, it opens up a window for each corresponding folder and tells me the size of each folder not how much all are in total....aside from a calculator, is there a way to tell the size combined?

Sep 5, 2009Did a regular upgrade of Leopard to Snow. Ran Entourage data base utility. Nothing happened. Waited 5 minutes figured that was long enough. If I can't fix a damaged data base, it may not be worth the upgrade. Can't get Office 2008 until late December. Suggestions? Reinstall Office?

Aug 28, 2009I am already aware that Snow Leopard reports hard drive sizes in base 10 and not base 2.
I'm not here to argue about proper use of SI unit prefixes, the HD manufacturer marketing cabal that reports base 10 and not base 2 sizes on the box or the merits of gibibytes vs gigabytes or GiB vs GB.
I'm just asking for a way to change the size reporting back to base 2.
I haven't yet found a way to change it back here in the forums or on Google and only a few others have asked in other threads.
I figured that making a new thread would be helpful for people who just want a solution instead of arguing about base 10 vs base 2 and having to dig through other threads full of that.

Sep 19, 2009Something I've noticed lately with Snow Leopard which I had not heard anything about but have been noticing with installing Snow Leopard or using disk utility with Snow Leopard systems. Just a nice little bonus I wasn't originally aware of that 10.6 is seeing drive capacities in decimal now to match the drive manufacturers specs as opposed to calculating in binary like they and Windows had been forever. Did a little digging and found a knowledge base article in regards to the change.

If I'm not careful, I end up selecting one of the old, and usually defunct, ones. How can I get rid of these outdated addresses? I've tried left-clicking an address and selecting "Remove address," but that seems to only remove it from the "To" field.

Jul 5, 2010If I drag the mouse over a bunch of files in Finder (to select them) and then click get "File...Get Info", I get a bunch of info windows pop up all over my screen, one window for each file!
What I normally want to do is, like in Windows, see the totals for all selected files selected in ONE window, but I don't see how to do this.

Jan 24, 2010I'm running 10.4 with Photoshop 8. When I open a jpeg that comes from my camera which is usually between 2.5 - 3.0 MB and then 'save as' without doing anything to it, it is reduced to about 750Kb. I am saving as Jpeg and using the maximum quality (12).

Aug 8, 2007I already know about reducing file size through print pdf, but from my experience this has not done too much to actually reduce the size. I was wondering if there is any other way to do this that is similarly easy and free? More importantly, how about the ability to reduce a word document or text edit without converting the file into a pdf? I have massive word files and would really like to reduce the size they take up, but really do not want to lose the ability work in the document

Mac Pro :: SSD - Is There Way Around The Low Performance For Small File Sizes
Oct 26, 2010Just got an SSD recently and it's extremely fast for big files (reads in the 240mB/sec range and an obvious improvement running the machine).But I also do work that uses a huge number of very small files, and I was surprised to find that the read performance is so much lower in that case. The 4k benchmark was actually slower than my old hard drive (about 40mB/sec), and loading up a project is also a little slower off of SSD versus HD. The files I'm loading are typically in the 60k range which should be better performance than 4k (and I would think better than HD, but that's not what I'm seeing on my machine). Looking at some SSD benchmarks online (on PC), 64k is still down from the max speed but not much, about 180.

Nov 26, 2009Specific example of a very common general scenario: I'm searching for an instruction manual on my computer.
I have a lot of product brochures and one manual from the same company, all with similar names. No idea which is the manual, but I do know that when I run a Spotlight search, the manual will be the one with the large file size.
Except for some inexplicable reason, Spotlight won't show you the file sizes of all the results! This is absolutely bizarre OS behavior. I have to Get Info of each one, which is laborious. And it's hard to compare them, as you have to match each Info window with each file name back in the Spotlight results.
This process is next to impossible when trying to compare a very large number of documents or video clips, etc.
Similar usability issue when you need to easily and quickly compare where a bunch of files you've searched for are all located. Can't do it on a Mac. (This is sadly one of those areas where Windows has long been easier and simpler than Mac.)
I understand the $39 "Path Finder" application can add these functions, but it introduces other limitations that matter to me. So, is there ANY way to sort by size and location in OSX (10.6.2)?

Feb 27, 2010I work a lot with video, DVD's, etc. This work relies heavily upon the long-time, established standard when it comes to file sizes; that is, that noble of all numbers, 1024.
Sadly, it appears that some computer makers, hard drive manufacturers, and even some ISP's, no longer have respect for the decades-old standard of 1024, upon which the computer industry was built. Thus, to earn a higher profit, and to pretend to offer more than they really are, they have chosen to use 1000, instead of 1024, as their unit of measurement. It makes Internet speeds appear faster than they really are; it makes hard drives seem bigger than they really are; etc. To me, it is plain old greed and deception.
For someone involved with video, where accurate measurements are required, this modern usage of 1000 presents a problem.
Thus, I am looking for a program which will allow me to display REAL file sizes in the Finder -- which relies upon 1024k/Kb, 1024Kb/Mb, 1024Mb/Gb, etc. -- rather than the more modern approach of 1000 units/whatever.
I was hoping that a program like MacPilot, or a similar app, might possess this tweaking feature, but I have been unable to find one to date.
The only thing that I can do for now is to use a program like MediaInfo, which is a halfway point, because I actually want ALL of my files on my hard drives to display the file size based upon 1024, and NOT upon 1000.

Nov 5, 2009I tried a quick MRoogle on this one, no luck for what I was looking for. I'm trying to figure out why iTunes video sizes are so ginormous...
I recently got addicted to the show Chuck, so I bought the 2nd season on iTunes...
Now, I've downloaded tv shows from other... ummm.. sources before, and it typically is about 375MB for an hour long show (45 mins really..)
But iTunes, I'm running into standard def video in the 600mb for the same length of time.
Is this due to iTunes encoding or something? I mean, granted the store seems to pipe out the downloads pretty quickly, but its still a pain to wait for a longer download than if I'd obtained these through questionable methods.
OS X :: Snow Leopard Changing Settings?
Nov 2, 2009I just installed Snow Leopard, and immediately I noticed that everything was darker. I had to adjust the gamma to get it to look normal, but things seem a little too bright now. Also in Adium, it messed up my fonts. My text is so small while my received messages are normal size, and I can't seem to get my sent message text to be the same size as my received message text. There are other small things too, but it's annoying and I'd like my old configs back, is there any way or do I just need to put up with it?

May 17, 2012Text looks correct on the screen, but a few letters get replaced in the printed copy with the preceding letter, so M sometimes prints as N, or e prints as d! Some M's and e's print correctly, same font, same page. I've rebooted, deleted preferences, restored fonts from Time Machine backup, no change. I've restarted the printer. But if I print to a pdf file, the pdf is correct, and Preview prints the pdf correctly.

Sep 13, 2009I installed SL on my iMac last week and changed the icon for the applications folder on my dock - no problem. Did the same for my Macbook last night and now the applications folder on both docks keeps disappearing. I use Mobile Me to sync the docks. I've dragged the folder from Finder into the dock and it stays briefly and then disappears.

Nov 28, 2009So I recently got a new iMac that has Snow Leopard and I noticed that this is about the second time that my mouse cursor has gotten stuck... not stuck in location, but the image of the cursor.
I'll move over a textbox and then it changes to the I bar cursor, but then I move away and it stays that... I move over a link and it turns into the finger icon, then I move away and it's still a finger.
Still in the beginnings of diagnosing, but I do have two user accounts logged in. The other account only has a Safari window open though, nothing exciting.

Apr 10, 2012I currently have an address range from 192.168.200.1 to 192.168.200.250 (subnet mask 255.255.255.0).......and I need more IP addresses.
If I change the subnet mask to 255.255.254.0, and increase the DHCP pool from 192.168.200.1 to 192.168.201.254.....will this work.
I have a couple of statically assigned printers, so I am guessing they will need their subnet mask changing as well.
