View 9 RepliesI'm thinking of getting a MBP 13'', together with an external display. That way I get the portability of a MBP 13'' while maintaining an in-house big external display and 400$ in my wallet, only losing a bit of processor power (which is found negligible by most users).
My question has to do with resolution. MBP 13'''s resolution is 1280 by 800, right? My question is: if I buy a display with higher resolution, will I be able to enjoy that resolution? Or no matter how big my external display's resolution is, will I always be stuck with 1280*800?
My brother's iBook G4 (I think it's a 2003 model) has a problem with the screen. When the computer is turned on, the screen stays black, although the backlight is on (the apple glows). Sometimes, on start up, the screen works normally for a random amount of time before going fuzzy and then black again.
Any ideas on how to fix this? Is it likely to be a problem with the hardware in the actual computer, or just the screen? Or is it a software thing?
Still a new mac user and have been playing around getting to know os x. The other day I was modifying my dock settings and have got it to a place which I'm happy with, apart from one problem. I was experimenting with different trash icons but decided to stick with the original so changed them back. Now, every time I shutdown and reboot, the trash icon is showing up as one of the trash icons I was experimenting, regardless of whether or not there is anything in the trash. If the trash has something in it, the wrong icon will be displayed before automatically switching to the correct one. However, if the trash is empty on startup, I have to put something in it, then empty the trash before the correct icon shows up. I have checked that I have deleted all the icons I was experimenting with but it seems like it the unwanted icon has been saved somewhere in memory and is the default trash icon on startup? Any ideas on what's going on or how to fix the problem?

When I shutdown my computer, all the applications are launched by default. I have unchecked the option "Reopen windows when logging back in". When I go to my login items in the preferences system, any application is present and when I click right and go to the options tab, the option "Open at login" is unchecked. The applications who are launched are Mail, NetNewsWire, Chrome and iTunes.Â

Is there a way to replace Aqua/Quartz as the default bootup desktop environment and instead start X with a window manager of my choice? I made an .xinitrc but not sure how to stop Aqua/Quartz from starting at bootup and replace it with X and my window manager.

I know I can go into "get info" and check "always open with" but it only does it with that file and not all .wmv files

how I can disable one of my video cards in my MacBook pro. The better of the two recently crapped out, or at least if am able to get it to turn on and can login to switch to the other video card it works fine.
Basically the screen glitches up and freezes the computer. I think it could have potentially taken damage from possible prolonged over heating from high temperature spaces, and a lot of dirty air over time blocking the vents. (after multiple cleanings)

After being a long-time Microsoft Word user, I have grown accustomed to the default font of Times New Roman, and I would prefer to continue using that for Pages as well. I know that it is as simple as changing the font, but I was wondering if there was a way to change the default font in Pages to Times New Roman just to save the hassle.

View 3 Replies View RelatedUsing OS X Leopard 10.5.8 on PowerPC G5. We have 15 people sharing files on a network. If we open a file on the network, work on it, and save it, it is readable and writable for everybody. But if we drag the file off the network, work on it on our own hard drive, and save it, and then drag it back to the network, it is read-only for everybody. Documents made on our own hard drives are, by default, read-only for others. This is a real time waster for us!
This means that every time we make a document on our own hard drives, we have to remember to go to the extra trouble to change it's permissions before we put it on our network. Please, is there some way to change the default settings, so that if I, say, save a Word doc on my hard drive and then move it to the network, it is readable and writable by everybody without me having to change it's permissions?

When I save a file, the file is readable and writable by the owner, and read only to all others (which I know is normal), but I would like my files to have read and write access to all upon saving them. Is there any way to accomplish this without simply changing the permissions of all the parent directories?
