MacBook Pro :: Disable Second Video Card Completely (non Default At Startup)
Apr 14, 2012
how I can disable one of my video cards in my MacBook pro. The better of the two recently crapped out, or at least if am able to get it to turn on and can login to switch to the other video card it works fine.
Basically the screen glitches up and freezes the computer. I think it could have potentially taken damage from possible prolonged over heating from high temperature spaces, and a lot of dirty air over time blocking the vents. (after multiple cleanings)
I want to disable audio output on my MBP, either entirely or just disable the built-in speakers. I don't want to mute it and be able to raise the volume and it'll start working again; I want there to be no possibility of sound unless I go back and fix what I changed. I know this sounds weird, but does anyone know how to do this?
I've used the dock for a very long time, but once I found DragThing, I fell in love, even more when I started using Witch for window management. But I have DragThing docks on all four sides of my desktop, and I hate the apple dock bouncing on me when I go to the side I left it. So, is there a way to disable the apple dock completely?
I purchased mine today and the firewall was off (guess that is the default setting) so i turned it on. Should i keep it on? And when clicked "on", i immediately got a window asking to allow or deny popups.app. and i clickd "deny".
We own a powermac G5 that has had some problems in the past, but nothing like this. When we press the power button there is a chime and fan that shows everything is working up. A white screen appears with the apple sign showing that it is loading. After this screen has been loading for a while the computer just shuts down completely.
Ok so I have a old Mac Performa 640CD/Dos that I am trying to to get up and running again. I had a monitor for it but it fell off the couch and broke. So I thought maybe I can use an adapter with it in order to use PC VGA monitor. Well after getting the first adapter and trying it, no luck, then I tried one that had dip switches on it. Tried 640 x 480, 800 x 600, almost all the dip switch combination with no luck on getting anything on the screen. Could it be that I might have a bad video card and it needs replaced? Or is this particular model not compatible with PC VGA monitors?
I have already set the default application to open PDFs to Preview by using the "Open with..." and "Change All" option.Â
Now PDFs open in Preview, but I have a weird side effect:Â when I create a PDF (from Microsoft Word, etc.) the document is created with an Adobe Reader ICON, it then quickly changes to a Preview ICON (and opens in Preview).Â
PDFs are doing what I want, but the flash of Adobe Reader ICON (pun intended) is quite annoying. I have searched through the Adobe Reader Preferences and can find nothing that seems related.
how can I disable the memory sharing with the graphic card? it makes me impossible to run a software, grandMA2, on windows 7 installed and run via bootcamp. where should I look for changing the preferences of memory and video, on lion or on windows7?
I would like to disable some processes from starting upon login, but can't figure out how. I am not referring to the Login Items of System Preferences>Accounts. I have checked /Library/StartupItems/ (empty), /Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist (essentially empty), and ~/Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist (which only contains the things that i do want, it matches my account preferences).
When my 2010 macbook pro changes graphics card it removes my background and sets it as a blue screen. Everything else still works fine and if i go back and set the desktop background again it sets it until next time the card changes!
How do I set my default video player to VLC Media Player instead of using Quicktime? I want all my video files to open always with VLC Media Player. I know you can right click on the video and select it to open with VLC media player from now on, but with over 400 videos, that can be very time consuming!
I have a problem with my Dropbox in Snow Leopard because it is all the time being started when I login and I'd like to disable that. I tried unchecking the option in the Dropbox preferences and deleting Dropbox from the "login items" of my account. But when I restart the computer it's there again.
Every time I boot or restart my iMac, MacOS folder always opens at login. How do I disable it? This doesn't happen on my Macbook only on my iMac, I can't find the folder in FInder to disable it.
I posted earlier about if I can use both a Nvidea 8800 GT and an ATI Radeon 2600 XT with my new Mac Pro. Currently it just has an ATI card and it seems like it'll work fine. The other question I have though, how will this work under VMWare? I have a Linux virtual machine but most of all I use a Windows XP Virtual Machine. Will there be a conflict between the two video cards when I use Windows XP? If so, I won't even need the ATI as much when I'm on Windows XP. Is it possible to disable that and just use the NVidea card while using Windows?
I cannot get the Classic environment to not automatically start when either I restart or turn on my PowerBook.
I've had this problem ever since someone needed to use my computer with a program that was for a prior operating system, once we found out that the only way for it to work on my Mac would be to wipe my current operating system and revert back to the Classic operating system, which of course at that point we stopped with the process.
Ever since then, the 9 is always bouncing in my dock, and when I go into system preferences I cannot uncheck the "Start Classic when you login" option, it is greyed out for some reason.
I've attached a screen shot, I have more of what happens when I login and I can post if it would be helpful
I'm sure many of you know how using bootcamp can cause slow startups when switching OS's because it has no cache to use. For example I'll be in Windows and then need to swap back over to Leopard to get something done, but it takes forever. The worst part is the list of login items... I've tried using scripts to separate them by 10 seconds or so, but nothing really made it faster. I was wondering if it was possible to login but cancel or disable the startup items for that login that one time... Sometimes I just need to login to grab something off the internet or something quick, but it takes me awhile because I have to wait for everything to load.
Do I make any sense? :P
And no, safe startup mode does not count. I don't want to disable the entire system... just the login items.
Well I got rid of the quicksilvers since they died. Power supplys gave out and took the motherboards, So I sold what was left on EBAY.
My G4 Ethernet was sold to a co-worked and he is quite happy.
And I got this off ebay today:
Dual 1.8GHz PowerPC G5Procs 2GB RAM (2 x 1GB PC3200U DDR SDRAM) Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-117D Samsung HD160JJ/P 160GB SATA HDD (not apple labeled, not original to this system) (1) Power Cord pci106b,9 PCI Ethernet Controller
Well I didnt' read the fine print and BAZINGA! I noticed that it comes without a video card.
So For video editing, watching hulu and youtube and netflix What do you guys recommend.
I do have a PCI GEforce at home with 512 megs for PC and I was wondering if I could flash it and if so, does anyone know of a good walkthrough?
is it possible to use the video from the first startup of OS X everytime i startup the computer. i found the video on my computer i just need to figure out a way to do what i wanna do.
Still a new mac user and have been playing around getting to know os x. The other day I was modifying my dock settings and have got it to a place which I'm happy with, apart from one problem. I was experimenting with different trash icons but decided to stick with the original so changed them back. Now, every time I shutdown and reboot, the trash icon is showing up as one of the trash icons I was experimenting, regardless of whether or not there is anything in the trash. If the trash has something in it, the wrong icon will be displayed before automatically switching to the correct one. However, if the trash is empty on startup, I have to put something in it, then empty the trash before the correct icon shows up. I have checked that I have deleted all the icons I was experimenting with but it seems like it the unwanted icon has been saved somewhere in memory and is the default trash icon on startup? Any ideas on what's going on or how to fix the problem?
I am trying to find a way to have my computer automatically boot into the Startup Manager by default. Right know I know you can set it to boot into Verbose, Debug, Single User and Safe mode with the nvram. But is there an option to set it to the Startup Manager.
It seems whenever I launch a youtube video, there is a tremendous lag that occurs for a good 30 seconds before my video is able to be seen. It completely locks up my browser and freezes. Thought it was my iMac at first, buy Firefox works fine. I reset everything on Safari and still nothing.
