View 2 RepliesI'm getting my first Mac tomorrow, an iMac 24" 2.8. After 20 years on PCs, I'm fed up with Windows. I've been fairly methodical in going over the PC, inch by inch and file by file, to make sure everything I need is brought over and can be used on the iMac. One of the biggest problems is 15 years of documents which were prepared in WordPerfect. I understand that neither iWork or MS Office can convert them. I also heard of AbiWord, a freeware program which can view and convert almost anything. So, I have a few choices. Since I'm going through each doc to see if I even need it or want it, I can convert each one in WordPerfect after I make the decision, to an MS Doc file (MS WORD 2003, RTF, ANSI, ASCII, or other files. If I do that, will iWork be able to read the file? What would be the best format to convert it too?
Or, I can decide what to keep and bring it over in WordPerfect format. When and if I need it, I can use AbiWord to convert at that time. Of course, this means adding an application to my computer. Does iWork/Pages emulate MS Word in the ability to read and convert other formats? What is the native format for saving in iWork? Is it a .DOC file? Any suggestions for the best method for me to transfer the files to the new computer and eventually use them? Does any program Batch process the conversions? BTW: I already purchased iWork, because of my belief that its 100% compatible with MS Office, and because it appears that any type of document I want to produce can be accomplished in iWork.
What is 'Flip4MAC' - ran across a site that said to view, if you have a mac, to download flip4mac -Â This is the first time i have seen this message and would like to have a clear understanding of it and is it safe to use?

is there any way of playing a DRM WMV file on a mac? I have Flip4Mac installed so can play WMV through QuickTime player. I also have virtual PC, which i can play the DRM WMV file with, but it plays really slowly in that and is virtually unwatchable.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI haven't read so much the blurb for Snow Leopard but will QuickTime X do without the need for Perian and Flip4Mac plug-ins? I understand QuickTime X has some increased compatibility, though I'm guess not to the extent that you can do without those plug-ins...?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI just switched from PC to Mac. I have thousands of WMA files on my hard drive, and I realized I cannot simply drag and drop them into iTunes. So I got online and downloaded Flip4Mac. At first this only allowed me to play the WMA files through Quicktime. So I read a bit more and it said I needed Flip4Mac Pro to use Quicktime components to convert WMA and other windows files to MP3 and other Mac compatible formats. So I bought Flip4Mac Pro. My iMac came preloaded with Quicktime X and when I open a WMA file in Quicktime and click export, the only option it gives me is "Audio Only" and it does not successfully export. Does anyone know how to use Flip4Mac Pro to convert WMA files to MP3? Â
I have already purchased Flip4Mac Pro and I simply would like to know how to use what I already have.

View 3 Replies View Relatedi have attempted to download flip4mac 2x .....it begins but doesn't get very far no matter how long I let it run in the download window. It just remains stuck. someone tell me what the problem is. I need it to view wmv files. My macbook is one week old, so far I have only downloaded printer software and Skype both of which went fine.
View 3 Replies View RelatedThe automatic Flip4Mac updater will install Microsoft's SIlverLight browser plugin automatically unless the user does a custom install. It was even going to install it on my 10.6.1 machine although the MS web site claims that SilverLight is tested through 10.5. I have contacted the Flip4Mac support people since I believe this is Malware behavior.
Most Mac users will be unaware of what SilverLight is and how it will effect their machine. Nor will most experts think to check for/remove it when troubleshooting. If you wish to make your concerns known, contact their desktop support group, and include "Support Case 1-74223" in the subject line.
after installing VLC in my mac book , my .wmv files are no longer playable with windows media player, i was able to play them just fine before that ( more than 6 months)

I have a late 2007 intel imac with 10.6.8. I notcied for the last two days that I have gotten this message after checking Software Update [code] I have had problems with occasional freezing/crashes where I have to do a hard shutdown, especially after watching videos via safari (e.g. Youtube) and/or the imac coming out of sleep. This hasn't been too problematic laterly compared to the past (maybe once or twice a week now v. once or twice a day). I do not know if this freeze/crash issue has anything to do with this console message.

Anyone know how to disable Flip4Mac and QuickTime so that I can use Windows Media Player 9? I need to use WMP9 on a couple of websites that do not work with Flip4Mac/QuickTime. Previously I had just opened the WMV Upgrade that is in the Flip4Mac folder and unchecked Use Flip4Mac WMV Browser plug-in and then relaunched Safari. But now even when I uncheck Flip4Mac, it, and QuickTime continue to open.

Can anyone please tell me how to get it trashed?
I use Mavericks 10.9.3. see enclosed picture. Why does QuickTime Player Movie (that has been converted to QuickTime.mov) show a Flip4Mac icon on the top right hand side of movie? How do I remove that Flip4Mac icon?
View 3 Replies View Relatedmany people have asked this already probably, but i was wondering about the advantages of Mac OS over Windows. i've heard some but they never made any sense to me. i've become somewhat tired of windows and the associated programs. but Mac is also very expensive. can you people give me any opinions or even links to hard facts about the differences between the operating systems.
View 79 Replies View RelatedAre there any tests that compare a 1.6GHz to 1.8GHZ(1.86GHz for Rev B) with the exact same configuration? For example I would be interested in comparing 1.6GHZ with HDD with a 1.8GHZ with HDD(Not SSD). The reason I ask is I would think the 1.6GHz would generate less slightly less heat and have a slightly longer battery life as compared to the 1.86GHz. So there might be more than just money saved when going with a 1.6GHz
View 2 Replies View RelatedJust a quick question for anyone kind enough to take a moment to answer: I have a 24" 2.93GHz Core2 Duo iMac (last year's model) that shipped with 2 x 2GB (hence total 4GB) of RAM. I am starting to feel the crunch from more memory-intensive programs, and so the time has come to upgrade. is there a clear performance advantage to installing matching RAM sizes, as opposed to 2 sticks of different sizes? I noticed that [URL] currently offers an 8GB kit (2x4GB) for around $260. This is a bit beyond my budget, so I was thinking of instead just getting one 4GB through them for $130, and then mixing it with the Apple 2GB stick which is already in the computer. Would I see a significant performance upgrade with the 6GB mismatched RAM vs. the 4GB matched?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI'm planning to buy a Mac Pro soon (within a week or so), and I'm wondering about the GPU setup. My question: Is there a processing advantage to getting multiple GT120's? I'm running two 30" ACD's so I know I don't need the extra card to support two monitors. But I'm wondering if Aperture, Photoshop, Lightroom, and other GPU intenstive apps would be able to take advantage of having two GPU's? Fyi - I'm planning on the 8x2.66GHz, 12GB ram, 1TB internal (I use drobo's for storage)...so just wondering what would be optimal for my photographic processing (and some videos with the 5Dmk2 camera).

I was planning on selling my iBook G4 to assist in buying a refurb MB, but might there be any advantages to hanging on to it? The only thing I can think of is as an additional backup, but as it is only 60 GB, doesn't seem worth it. Book G4, 1.33, 640MB, 60 GB. Any creative uses for it or is it best to sell?
