MacBook :: Not Starting Up Correctly, DVD Drive Sinking?
Apr 4, 2010
My Macbook has decided to stop starting up correctly. Most of the time, I can't get past the gray startup screen, but if I'm able to type in a password, it just timeouts and eventually turns off.I thought about re-installing OSX, only to find that the Superdrive I never use has somehow sunk into the case. I try to put a CD in, but unless I angle it, it hits some sort of barrier. If I angle a CD into it, I can push firmly to get the CD in, but it sounds like it would do damage.
So I searched the forums and couldn't find a thread on this. My finder is no longer displaying my free space correctly. Whenever I remove files, it is stuck at 5.85 GB, even after dumping several gigs of files. I have an Early 2008 MacBook running Snow Leopard and my disk has been repaired and verrfied.
What I did was I inserted the OSX disc, rebooted and waited for the mac osx setup to start from the disc. After selecting english as my main language I launced disk utility from the task bar.I choose to "'Erase" The entire drive which took a few seconds and I ended up with a supposedly blank 160GB drive called "Untitled" My question is was this done correctly? I reinstalled OSX on this "Untitled" drive and after a reboot the introduction movie started rolling.
I just bought my first mac from my brother a couple of days ago and he used it for music downloading/recording and also video editing so when he sold it to me it really didn't have that much space left on it so I when out and purchased a Western Digital My Book Essential Edition External Hard Drive and can't seem to figure the installation out and probably how to use it correctly.
I keep getting a message that my disk has not been ejected correctly when I haven't done anything to my G Drive. This happens frequently. It is my back up drive connected to my iMac running OSX version 10.9.4
I just bought the 15" Macbook Pro i7 this weekend. I have a copy of Windows, and it loads up just fine. I used Bootcamp Assistant to partition my hard drive, but when I get to the windows install, it says that the hard drive isn't formatted correctly to install windows on
I have a flash drive that I purchased yesterday. The first time I stuck it in it was read like expected. I ejected it correctly, everything was fine. Now when I put it in, it doesn't show up on the desktop or in the finder. However when I unplug it I get the message saying it was not removed correctly.
I have a late 2009 15 inch mbp. I upgraded the hard drive to a 640g and has been fine for a while. I previously was not getting the correct drive size in bootcamp, was only seeing 595g instead of 640g total partition size. when i look at finder it shows 639 gigs, so correct filesize. When i look at disk utility through utilites and also when i boot from the install disk, they both say 639gigs as well. When I look in grandperspective it also shows only 454gigs used, while spotlight is showing 486gigs used. When i add up all the items on my hard drive
Did a quick search and couldn't find anything. My HD in my powerbook and full and I can't seem to start up my powerbook because the hard drive is so full. Does anyone know a way to get the computer started up so I can free up some space in my hard drive? I also have an external HD if that is of any help.
I have a first generation iMac G5 and it come with 80GB of internal storage. The drive is so full that I rarely have more than 2 GB available. Even seeing 1 is becoming hard. I checked the size of all the areas of the computer and together all the files visible on the Macintosh HD only amount to about 61GB This leaves anywhere between 17-19GB (counting the way they measure GB) of space that is not accounted for. I understand there are hidden system files and other things that are not visible to the Finder, but this number seems outrageous. I was thinking of backing up my entire computer. Zeroing out the hardrive and reinstalling the OS and starting from scratch. If I wanted to do this maintaining the same documents files applications preferences and users.
SMART is telling me my hard drive is going to fail plus it has been having trouble starting up recently. It usually takes 3 tries for it to start and it takes a really long time. I've tried repairing permissions and zapping p-ram. I'm using carbon copy to completely clone my hard drive onto my external.
Once I buy a new hard drive, how can I transfer all data back onto it in the easiest way possible? Can use my snow leopard disc to format the drive and then is there a way to just transfer all data from my external onto it?
recently I bought WD6400AAKS hard drive. I made to partitions (1st for OS and applications, 2nd one for photo files). I also did fresh OS install and loaded basic applications. Strangely I didn't notice any speed boost while booting and to be honest I feel like all applications (photoshop for example) are also starting much slower than on original hdd.
Is there any way to test hard drive if it performs as it should be? I also have 2 more older drives installed. is it possible that one of them would slow the system down?
Ok, i have a MacBook Pro, running OS 10.5.6, i have all the updates complete. My WD mybook is a 500G,.. the one with the blue circle button in the font [on/off button and blue ring light] you can see it at:
URL
this is my issue: Few days ago it just stopped mounting, I had to force reboot my computer and it hasnt come up sense.
Odd things: Disk Utilities reads that there is a drive connected, but wont mount nor give the options to mount and says that the total capacity=0 bytes [when connected by Firewire 400] when i connect it with USB2 to USB [the square USB to regular USB] it comes up the same but with total capacity = 2TB
STARTING UP: when the WD started up, or powers on, it turns on, the light goes around the ring as usual then it dims down and slowly illuminates the entire ring up and just stays all lit.
NOISES: It makes these odd [sort of soft] clicking noises when starting up,.. not sure if its done that all the time or if it just started,..
COMPUTER START UP: i have tried having it start up by powering everything down [computer and WD] and starting up the computer so the computer starts up the WD, which it does, but then it locks up my computer,..
Disk Utilities [DU]: shows the nice little yellow external WD drive icon on the left panel with the name WD [NOTE: it does not show the double icon, WD and then a sub icon with the drive name] and it wont eject the WD icon, even if the drive is no longer connected, it locks up DU and then if i try to force quit it locks up the mac.
It does give me the option to Partition/Erase and all the rest, but this is my main drive and i am a video editor,.. sort of NEED the files on the drive,.. so i am not all about erasing my data and loosing all my work.
NOTE: the Drive was never formatted, i know i was stupid not to do that,.. but we can move on from that, its in that FAT format, never partitioned or anything.
I have tried hooking it up to a PC running vista, it installed all the "New Software bs" and then never mounted or anything,.. [that was only with the USB, my pc doesnt have a firewire connection]
I have two newer WD 500G drives as well [the ones with the white bar light in the front] and they both come up fine. but if i try to link them up through the older one nothing happens [they dont mount]
what can i do to get the data off the drive? can i reformat the drive and still recover the data? If i throw it at the wall and bust it up,.. is the data still good? Was that too much details?
i am having a macbook pro 13" from about 4 monthes and a month ago my trackpad was not working correctly; it does not click when i press on it i have to press hard and keep holding hard if i want to move some file or pix or anything, i tried all the trackpad's prefrences but it has nothing to deel with the click it is only about the tap to click or scrolling.
MacBook Pro 3.1, with GeForce 8600M GT (128MB) DVI Socket.I've connected a new AOC i2353Fh LED Monitor using a DVI to HDMI Cable, the screen is detected and I have had it working fine.Initially I had it running at 1080p FullHD and it looked great.Using a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, I could close the laptops lid and just use the external screen. After a few hours running like this, the screen went blank and I had to go back to the Laptops LCD.Now I can't seem to get the MacBook to output to the AOC screen, it's still detected fine, but I get no display.I have confirmed the screen is OK, by connecting to a windows PC and trying both HDMI inputs at full HD 1080p. These were both fine. How do I get the MacBook work correctly with my screen, then use it as my only screen?
The track pad is not responding as it should, arrow moves on its own at times and when clicked it does not respond or click where it should. Have tried restarting it and it will work fine for a min or so then go back to being inaccurate.
When I open facetime, the camera doesnt come on. It just opens with a black screen and the camera logo with a slash through it. I cant open the preferences to fix anything in it
MacBook Pro 17" boot correctly but no video. I get the start-up sound and can hear the fan running. I have already tried the reset SMC and PRAM options. Still no video, I have even attempted to connect another video monitor, but nothing.
I bought a dvi > hdmi cable to connect my air to the hdmi port of a samsung 46inch tv. The picture is perfect at 1600x1200, but when i select 1920x1080 it looks really bad, sorta like 16bit colors. When I use a vga cable it looks fine at 1920x1080. So what am i doing wrong? or has it something to do with the dvi > hdmi cable i bought?
I'm going to try using my 32" LCD TV as a main monitor for my MacBook Pro, I'll see how it goes (it would be great if all works well and I don't have to shell out 500 on an ACD!) but I'd like to make sure that the colours are as accurate as they can be.
I installed Migration Assistant on my PC and am trying to transfer my itunes to my MBA. My Mac gets to the screen where the validation code can be seen, but the screen on my PC says that it's waiting for my mac to get online, or waiting to find it. I left it for a half an hour and the code never appeared on my PC screen.
I am trying to install windows 7 using bootcamp. I have a windows 7 premium 64 bit iOS, an intel MacBook air 128 ssd drive, and a 16gb Kingston108. I used bootcamp put windows on the flashdrive with the updates and drivers. Partitioned the hard drive (20 gb for windows). Then it restarted the Mac, it kind of sat on the grey startup for a minute then went to a black screen that said non-system disk press any key to reboot. I pressed any key, it didn't reboot, I pushed every key, it didn't reboot. I then held the power button down to force the shutdown. I restarted and same issue. I then option held and booted into Mac os and re did the whole process and same issue.
My macbook pro is slow on start up. Today I had to shut the computer down using the power button two times in a row. On the third time, the computer executed the start up correctly. What could be the cause of this?
Info: Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.2), 2.2 ghz intel duo core processor
I just got a 15" MBP and would like to hook it up to a 24" Dell Ultrasharp I inherited. However, I know nothing about the button settings on the monitor.
When I connect the two, the MBP background shows up on the Dell monitor but the icons that run along the bottom of the MBP screen are cut off. I'm assuming I need to change the monitor settings but don't know what I'm doing.
When I go into my works website and im printing paperwork - its in a pdf format and it does not print correctly. It shrinks it to only fit the top third of the page..there is no option "fit to page" and ive tried various printing settings,
