Hardware :: Hard Drive Stopped Mounting / Clicking Noises When Starting Up

Feb 15, 2009

Ok, i have a MacBook Pro, running OS 10.5.6, i have all the updates complete. My WD mybook is a 500G,.. the one with the blue circle button in the font [on/off button and blue ring light] you can see it at:

URL

this is my issue: Few days ago it just stopped mounting, I had to force reboot my computer and it hasnt come up sense.

Odd things: Disk Utilities reads that there is a drive connected, but wont mount nor give the options to mount and says that the total capacity=0 bytes [when connected by Firewire 400] when i connect it with USB2 to USB [the square USB to regular USB] it comes up the same but with total capacity = 2TB

STARTING UP: when the WD started up, or powers on, it turns on, the light goes around the ring as usual then it dims down and slowly illuminates the entire ring up and just stays all lit.

NOISES: It makes these odd [sort of soft] clicking noises when starting up,.. not sure if its done that all the time or if it just started,..

COMPUTER START UP: i have tried having it start up by powering everything down [computer and WD] and starting up the computer so the computer starts up the WD, which it does, but then it locks up my computer,..

Disk Utilities [DU]: shows the nice little yellow external WD drive icon on the left panel with the name WD [NOTE: it does not show the double icon, WD and then a sub icon with the drive name] and it wont eject the WD icon, even if the drive is no longer connected, it locks up DU and then if i try to force quit it locks up the mac.

It does give me the option to Partition/Erase and all the rest, but this is my main drive and i am a video editor,.. sort of NEED the files on the drive,.. so i am not all about erasing my data and loosing all my work.

NOTE: the Drive was never formatted, i know i was stupid not to do that,.. but we can move on from that, its in that FAT format, never partitioned or anything.

I have tried hooking it up to a PC running vista, it installed all the "New Software bs" and then never mounted or anything,.. [that was only with the USB, my pc doesnt have a firewire connection]

I have two newer WD 500G drives as well [the ones with the white bar light in the front] and they both come up fine. but if i try to link them up through the older one nothing happens [they dont mount]

what can i do to get the data off the drive? can i reformat the drive and still recover the data? If i throw it at the wall and bust it up,.. is the data still good? Was that too much details?

OS X :: Noticed Unusually Loud Clicking Noises From The Hard Drive - HD Fails?

Dec 1, 2009

I have a Unibody Macbook, and recently it has been very slow. But not with processes as much has hard drive related actions such as playing back saved video, loading files in the finder, especially applications, and its been temporarily freezing lately for like 10 seconds. I have also noticed unusually loud clicking noises from the hard drive, which i am pretty sure screams imminent hard drive failure. Do this sound , does 4 gigs of ram make a noticeable difference over 2?

OS X :: Recover Data Fom Hard Drive / External Drive Stopped Mounting

Sep 4, 2009

So, I've been searching the forums, as I just had a 1TB (well actually a dual 500GB) external drive stop mounting and start clicking on me. I'm trying to find a way to recover files, and I know I've seen a lot of posts on DriveSavers, which. I was searching around, and I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of a company called "OneWorld Data Recovery." It was something I stumbled across, but I can't find any reviews, or nail down anybody who's used it.

Clearly, this seems fairly suspect, but I figured I'd check and see if anybody had ever heard of it or used it. Thanks!

OS X :: Time Machine / Wireless Modem Stopped Hard Drive From Mounting

Feb 14, 2010

why I tryed using their wireless service, which would seem screwed my Hard drive. I installed a small application from Telstra (main telecommunications company in Australia) that allows you to connect via a USB modem to the internet wirelessly. After completing the installation, it prompted me to restart and I did so. However, before it shut down a dialogue came up saying it had to clear/reset the system cache or something like that. I clicked ok (only thing i could do) and my computer restart as normal and I had internet. The problems started when my time machine tried to backup; where it stopped while "preparing to backup" and came up with an error dialogue saying something like Time failed because it couldn't find the directory. I restarted my mac once more without the USB modem attached and tried the backup again, whereby i new error came saying it couldn't mount the drive. One more restart later and I now have a Time Machine that doesn't backup or see prior backups, and a Hard Drive that not only can't be mounted but isn't recognised as even a Media device by Disc Utilities.

Hardware :: New External Hard Drive Noises?

Sep 9, 2009

I just bought a 750GB Western Digital My Book external hard drive to use for Time Machine backups and other storage.

The problem is, when my Macbook is writing to the drive it sometimes makes a weird scratching noise. Is it okay for a hard drive to make noises when it is writing data?

Also, when the hard drive is plugged in to my laptop, even when inactive, the two lights on the front flash. Does this indicate that something is wrong?

Mac Mini :: 2011 Makes Odd Occasional Screeching Noises But Is It Not The Hard Drive?

Mar 25, 2012

my 2011 Mac Mini that I bought back in January is making some strange noises occasionally. High-pitched screeching noises with some clicking. It sounds like it should be the hard drive sounds of doom, but what's odd is that I check the drive using SMARTreporter occasionally, and nothing really changes as far as error statistics, and the drive otherwise works fine. So I'm paranoid, just because I wonder – is it potentially not the hard drive and actually something else entirely? Is this even possible?

Mac Pro :: Hard Drive Not Mounting - Dead?

Nov 2, 2008

One of the internal drives on my mac pro does not show up at all - most likely, it's dead correct? I used it to store all my itunes movies.. (ATV would connect to the mac pro and the files would play from that drive)

It's a one month old seagate drive, is it normal for it to go bust just for playing media? Can I hook it up to an enclosure and try it out.. disk utility doesn't see the drive.

Luckily I backed up most of it last night.. was going to do the rest tonight.. but ugh, just my luck.

OS X :: Mounting Shared Hard Drive On G5?

Feb 13, 2010

I have a laptop (10.6) I take on trips and a G5 (10.5) desktop that stays at home. I have a folder I keep synched between the two computers. When I get home I use my desktop to log into my laptop, pick the applicable drive and normally the drive icon mounts on my G5 desktop. Accept yesterday when I did this, no desktop icon appeared, however I did get a finder window to appear that represented this shared drive. The problem arose when I tried to synk the two drives using Synk. Even though this drive was supposed to be "mounted", there was no desktop icon for it and Synk could not see it. After fiddling, I was finally able to make an alias of this drive and put it on the desktop, and get Synk to find it, but the situation strikes me as strange. Why is this hard drive not mounting on my desktop like it usually does?

Mac Mini :: Power PC Hard Drive Not Mounting

Mar 13, 2008

My mother-in-laws Power PC Mac Mini stopped working the other day. After booting to disk utility and seeing that there wasn't a hard drive mounting I assumed the hard drive was dead. I ordered a replacement from OWC, opened the mini, and put in the new hard drive. Now I can't get the mini to boot from CD all I get is a blank gray screen and eventually the folder with a question mark icon. I was under the assumption I could boot to disc again, format and reinstall on the new hard drive. I also can't get the CD to eject but it is spinning up.

PowerPC :: Hard Drive Not Mounting In G4 Quicksilver?

My hard drive from my G4 733mhz wont mount at all. The ? in a blue folder just appears. I have tried to start up from an external mountable drive and the ? again appears. When I disconnect the internal hard drive completely and boot from my external drive it boots up.

Prior to this problem I took the hard drive from my G4 733Mhz and put it in my G4 867Mhz computer to load a new disk image. I did this as I didn't have access to an external mountable drive then. After doing this the hard drive doesn't mount in either computer and when connected all other mountable drives wont mount. I have the internal drive set to master.

PowerPC :: Unable To Start Powerbook / Freezing And Strange Clicking Noises

Oct 5, 2007

So I've got my mothers aluminium 12" Powerbook here because there were some troubles with it, it was freezing, made strange clicking noises on the left side (like 20 times every time she tried to restart) and eventually wouldn't start up anymore. So I guess there must be something wrong with the harddrive .

What is the best strategy to try to save as much data as possible? I have the original OS X 10.3.4 installation disks, I have an external hard drive to write the users data folder to. Do I just slide in the install disk while starting up (I mean I can't slide in the disk while it's off can I?) and will I be able to attach the external drive in order to copy the files?

MacBook Pro :: Hard Drive Mounting Screws - Couldn't Take Out

Sep 8, 2010

Today I decided to change the HDD in my MBP. I read the manual prior to that so I was all set. It took me almost an hour to take the metal back off, it was a pain in the ass as I had one of those small japanese screwdrivers set with no proper grip. However when I disassembled everything, to my shocking discovery I came to those type of screes I rarely see. Those 4 screes on the side of the HDD (mounting screws). I could not take them out since I had no tool for that, Im not a native english speaker so I wanted to ask anyone how are those screws called and also the proper took size or name so I can buy it tomorrow.

Hardware :: LaCie Hard Drive Is Not Mounting - Only Shows On PC

Jan 16, 2009

I have a 500 GB LaCie hard drive that I bought 11 months ago, so its still under warranty. It's formated with two partitions on it: Time Machine Backups and Storage which are both 250 GB. I also have windows installed on my mac via bootcamp and i have a program installed called MacDrive which allows me to view the contents of my mac hard drive and external hard drive.

Ok, so about a week ago, my hard drive wouldn't mount on my mac. I couldn't see it in Disk Utility or the Finder. It's not making any weird noises and sounds like its running normally, so i don't think anything is physically wrong with the hard drive. I booted up windows and plugged it in and this is what happened.

[URL]

I pressed OK and windows asked me what I'd like to do with the two partitions. I chose "Open files in folder" or whatever that option is and i can see my files, open them, and copy them, even the time machine partition. But when i go to my computer and click one of the partitions, it shows this.

[URL]

This EVEN shows on the Macintosh HD which worked fine before. So, does anyone know what the problem is? Should I try reformatting the external hard drive in windows? Should I reinstall MacDrive?

OS X :: External Hard Drive Not Mounting After Improper Disconnection

Jul 4, 2009

I've had an WD My book 500 GB external for about as long as I've had my macbook about 1 1/2 years. No trouble with it at all, until yesterday. At some point either the power got cut or the cable was pulled out incorrectly it got disconnected from the mac. Thus resulting in it not mounting now. I've tried disk repair and shutting down the macbook and restarting...plugging in after everything is started. but to no avail. I am a photographer and about 25% of my photographs I don't have backed up anywhere else. So if I can't get it to work. I need some way to get the information off and reformat. or get it working correctly.

OS X :: New Internal Hard Drive Not Mounting In Black Macbook?

Feb 18, 2010

I have a 1st generation Macbook laptop. I swapped out the original 80GB HD & installed a larger 320GB internal HD I recently bought on Ebay. At 1st, everything seemed ok, the hard drive mounted ok and I went ahead and proceeded to 1st partition the drive into 4 80GB separate partitions, with a plan to install Snow Leopard on one of the partitions, have 1 for room for a backup drive, and the other 2 partitions would host Windows 7 & possibly Linux, via (bootcamp). After experiencing some frustration with the installation of Snow Leopard, it appeared everything was ok, so then I went ahead and migrated my entire original 80GB mac factory HD over into 1 of my partitions. Everything seemed to go quite smoothly up to this point. However, soon afterwards, my HD somehow was no longer mounting! It still has not mounted ever since this time. I have tried taking the HD out and swapping it with the old one and it still will not mount. However, the original hard drive mounts right away without any issues. My entire livelihood is essentially thru my computer as an online grad student, so I went out to Frys Electronics & purchased a WD Scorpion Blue 500 GB HD after experiencing all of these issues. The new HD is working flawlessly. However, my issue and question is, what can anyone with technical knowledge suggest I do to completely erase the other non-mounting HD? I plan to send the non-mounting HD back for reimbursement to the Ebay seller soon. I'm concerned because, as I previously mentioned up above, this HD still potentially is holding all of my personal information from my previous drive I had for years installed into the macbook.

MacBook Pro :: Making Lots Of Whirring / Clicking Noises And Slow In Opening Apps

Dec 5, 2014

My 100G space came up as full last night so I freed up about 15g. space, but now today I notice it is going way slow, taking forever to open or show data in files - eg if I click on the master application folder - the names of indiv. folders show but file content on right doesn't come up until about 30 secs, and the computer itself is making all sorts of whirring/clicking type sounds which i called "thinking" but it's as if the memory is still full and is operating at half it's speed.

I have a 2.16 GHz intel core duo processor, and memory is 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.

Get info shows:  Capacity of 99.69GB, avail is 14.11 GB

Any tips on what has happened since last night to today? I thought it would be running faster and accessing files really easily.

I just got a pop up saying:  Your iDisk is unavailable.  Make sure you are logged in to your MObile ME acct, then try again to access your iDisk.

COuld this be the problem? I've never seen this before. What is my iDisk, and what does it do?

MacBook Pro :: Clicking Noise In My Hard Drive?

Aug 30, 2010

I just bought a brand new MacBook Pro about 2 weeks ago. I'd say about a week ago I notice a clicking noise when I pick up the macbook or move it at all coming from the hard drive.

I finally took to the internet to find out what was going on, and got mixed results. Some said that it was normal for a Macbook Pro and that it was securing the hard drive so it didn't break while I moved it, and a vast majority said that the hard drive's failure was imminent. So what is it?
