MacBook :: Harmful To Leave The Lid Open In Sleep Over-night For IAlarm?
May 17, 2009
Is it harmful to my macbook to leave the lid open in sleep over-night for iAlarm? I know it seems slightly naive, but is sleep different when the lid is closed versus open?
I have a new MBP 13". When I'm using the Mac it's mostly connected to AC. Over night it's mostly sleeping without the AC connected. My question is, if I should let it sleep at night or should I shut down the Mac regarding to maximize the battery life?
I Can't figure out what is going on; I've played around in the battery settings; but maybe I'm just too Green to my used 17 Inch Macbook Pro that I bought 3 months ago.
I used to have a full battery at night, close the lid go to sleep and have hardly any battery loss first thing in the morning.
Now, I close the lid or even manually put the Macpro to sleep ( from the apple menu ) and wake 8 hours later with " NO" battery.
whats going on? what do I need to check? what do I need to set? this is getting frustrating.
the battery is still strong get about 3 hours on a full charge; it's a mac battery; so It must just be settings or something I need to do in the software.
Is it OK to leave the MB on sleep. On my previous Laptop I never shut it down unless it was necessary, im talking the computer never shutdown for like 2 or 3 weeks of use. Not continuous use, I use the laptop 3,4 maybe 5 times a day and its kinda hard for me to wait for the boot up, i usually just close it (sleep) and go away. Can I damage my MB doing that?
I own a late 2009 MBP that I use with an external monitor as my work computer each day. At the end of the work day I generally unplug the network cable, Apple Cinema Display, and then just put it to sleep by closing the lid. Some days I use it later after I get home, others I don't. If I leave it in Sleep mode I generally lose about 5-8% of the battery by the next morning.
I'm just wondering if I'd be better off shutting it down completely each night. Any pros/cons? Battery considerations?
My iMac seems to wake up often in the middle of the night and in the day when I'm at school. I was wondering if there's an app/pill that can attempt to do the opposite of Caffeine: keep my Mac asleep at night. Does anyone know of such a thing? I doubt it exists, but then again sometimes I doubt I exist.
I have a early 2009 17" uMBP upgraded to Snow Leopard. Prior to closing the lid to activate sleep mode, is it advisable to leave an application and/or web page in place?
I just recently, in the past week, have been doing this . . . And I was wondering if there might be any adverse effects with this practice.
Newbie here, It has just come to my attention that my 27" iMac wakes up during the night. It is always put to sleep at night rather than turned off. My parents are staying for the weekend & sleeping in the same room as the imac, & mentioned this morning that screen turned on a couple of times during the night. I looked at the time machine back ups & found it had made 2 during the night.
I have been shutting down my MacBook Pro OS X10.7.3 at night.I just read that OSX runs "maintenance" procedures early in the morning (between 3:15 am and 5:30 am) and that if Mac is powered off at that time, that these maintenance procedures will NOT run.True or False? AppleCare says that it won't make any difference and I won't be affected if these night procedures never run. But, if that's true, then why are they set up to run at night? ? I went to the Apple Manual but it does not address my question.
I was checking out this omegle chat website and someone sent me a link which i opened in my browser. The pop-up said you are an idiot, and made closing my browser impossible. I had to force quit my browser. The link was quite long...the link started with google, so i thought it was something nice
Is there there anything wrong in using the battery that was drop and have a dent on it. I drop my macbook battery when I open it up to upgrade my hdd and it left huge dent on it. I'm not worry about how the dent looks on my battery because it a battery is cover by the lid, but I am more concern about the battery performance or the life of it. Like... would a dent battery burn up my mac and stuff? Since I dropped it 4 days ago, I've been using my macbook just fine, it not too hot, battery is about 2.5 to 3.5 hours with factory default power setting setting. Since nothing is wrong now it wont be likely to occur in the future right?
Is there any harm in just unplugging USB without first ejecting drive? I've got external HD at work I plug in via USB to my Macbook Pro. When I go home I get lazy and would like to just unplug. Is there not a more automated way other than manually ejecting drive before removing cable?
My computer will just not go to sleep on its own. I have tried the Command-Option-Eject option and it DOES go to sleep, or when I close to lid as well. I tried reseting the power management by holding down the power button for 10 seconds without the battery. It also does go to sleep when the computer is in "safe mode." Is there something causing it not to go to sleep? This is what my console keeps saying with all messages. I have also uninstalled Farsuite from my computer and restarted.
I have an October 2008 Unibody MacBook. Recently the hard drive will not go to sleep with the lid open.
Prior to installing Snow Leopard, after a period of inactivity the MacBook's display would go to sleep, followed soon by the hard drive (so that the blinking white light would appear) even with the lid open. Currently the display will go to sleep but the hard drive seems to stay active.
The MacBook does go into full sleep with the lid closed.
Is there anything I can do that will allow the computer to go to sleep with the lid open?
Is it safe to charge my Macbook over night in a laptop bag that I have? What's your take on this? How do you charge your Macbook (on sleep, shut down, open, closed etc)?
I left my mbp next to an open window on a very damp night after a few very damp days. In the monring it would not start after I pressed the power button, and the magsafe connector appeared to be dead, there was no light of any color. I used another magsafe whose light did turn on, and left it all plugged in overnight. In the morning it all turned on as if nothing had happened, and my magsafe appeared to be working fine. I had everything back up, and was lucky to be in town, but what do I do now to trouble shoot and make sure this doesn't happen again?
MBP/Lion - I'm using my MBP in dual monitor mode with an external monitor and power supply connected. If I close the lid and then disconnect the monitor, my MBP won't wake after opening the lid. I know that with Lion a change was made and the power stays on with an external monitor attached and the lid closed (with the adapter plugged in), but if you unplug the display, there doesn't seem a way out of this state. Even plugging the monitor back in, the display wont refresh In this state the power managment is confused. When closed, the power light is on, with the lid opened the power light goes off, the display remains blank and I can't wake the device. The only solution is to re-boot. as I just want to close the lid, unplug power and the monitor and leave work to go home. I end up running the battery down if I don't catch it before putting the MBP in my bag, and I always have to reboot.
since last night (monday) i have opened my mac book pro up for sleeping because i never shut my computer off....well last night i opened my computer up, typed in my password and then all of a sudden my screen went black....i called apple support and got it fixed but then again it happened again to me this morning? why is this?
Every time I let my MBA go to sleep, the Mail app opens. I checked and it is not set to 'Open at Login'. Since installing Sparrow, I don't even use the Mail app anymore. This happens both when it sleeps after x minutes as well as when it is put to sleep via closing the computer.

I have already run the battery down to zero left it over night and started it up and it had 2% so I ran that down again. Is it now suffice to say that it is dead? Or should I leave it for the rest of the day and try to turn it on and run it down once more
my backlight decided it only wants to light up intermittently. and only for a little bit at a time. screen seems to still work, but when i open from sleep, sometimes it will flicker on the right side (like a fluorscent bulb) and go out again, or light up completely like it is supposed to, or do nothing at all. Machine is over 2 years old, and has gotten a lot of use. What are the chances this is a relatively cheap (1-200) fix? The machine is in good shape otherwise except for palmrest cracking which i havent gotten fixed due to the fact there is no apple store within 100 miles...
How do I set up a MacBook Pro running Lion to interface with Starry Night software? My telescope is a Meade LX200GPS with a serial input. I have tried using a Radio Shack USB/Serial adapter which worked when I used a Windows 7 laptop but does not work with my MacBook Pro.
Info: MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2010), Mac OS X (10.7.4)
When I open MacBook Pro (in sleep mode) I see rainbow on black screen. I have to keep the power button. I have this problem only when I open (after closing) my MBP. It started after an upgrade HHD to SSD (OCZ Agility 4). SMC reset did not help. I have MBP 13 late 2011 i5 2,4. Mac OS X 10.7.4.
When I close the lid on my MacBook Pro (Late 2008), the battery drains almost completely over a night or so! Very odd. Anyone else dealing with this? I reset the PRAM already.
My macbook pro overheated last night while in sleep mode. I starting it this morning it just kept a black screen and would do nothing else. Tried holding down power button for 10 secs and now it wont turn on at all. I pulled the battery out and unplugged the from the charger. Put it back in the computer got warm without even being on. Don't know what to do. Do not have apple care, mac was bought through school and is 4 years old. Is there anything that can be done to save it?
I would like to know if charging the MacBook Pro for 8 hours overnight will cause the battery to diminish faster. I only let it happen once, I usually unplug it when its green.
Of course i'll unplug it 2-3 times a month and run the battery down to condition it, but other than that, is it bad to leave it plugged in 24/7, including when not using it and it's turned off?
