View 24 RepliesJust wondering as I've heard a few people just let them sleep I always shut mine down?

Coming from Windows sometimes I hibernate the laptop but I have heard alot of people say with Mac's that they just put them to sleep. Firstly do you just do this for short periods as such as overnight? Also can your carry them around whilst on sleep or should they be shut down.

so i've been having an issue with the double tap to hi-light any text i wish to copy. Such things as double tapping the URL bar to hi-light the whole url so i can just retype w/e site i want to go to. Every time i restart or turn off or my mbp goes to sleep and i reopen it, the double tap function resets. So i'm forced to go to the system preferences > trackpad> "double-click speed" to slowest in order to get my double tap to hi-light anything again. Is there something wrong with my mbp? Or is there a way i can save the settings when i put the double-click speed to slow so that it wont reset every time my mbp needs to be woken up or restarted?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI tried SMC resets and everything. The Macbook takes a charge and charges normally when it is asleep, or off. It will charge to the max (96%). Battery has 349h load cycles. Charges when asleep or off. As soon as I power on the laptop or wake it up, it will stop charging. Battery holds the normal charge I usually get (3ish hours). Tried a few pram and smc zaps. Battery charger is a Hong Kong knockoff. Battery inside is genuine. 2008 Aluminum Macbook. Cleaned magsafe and port with q-tip and still to no avail.
When plugged in, it will run *off the battery* and the charger will show a green light and not trickle charge the battery. It will drain the battery, and then when it is drained it will run off the power. Check the screen shot. I am thinking that the charger is the culprit. Because it holds a charge when I let it charge while it is off. It will charge up just fine, in the two hours or whatever it takes to charge itself up. Battery usage is normal when it is running off the battery.
Could someone please explain to me why my computer is shutting down in sleep-mode. In addition, when it happens, the fan goes into hyperblow, which doesn't make sense because it would not be operating if the system were completely shut down. It acts like it is shut down but won't respond or wake up, etc. I re-loaded my system software per the Mac Store Genius' advice, but that didn't work. Is it possible that my power supply is going?
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy iMac shut itself down last night while in sleep mode. It's rarely ever turned off. I cannot get it started today. I'm not the most tech saavy person but can follow instructions if someone could walk me through it.
Purchased in 2006 and has worked well until now. AppleCare has expired.

When I select Sleep mode - nothing happens. Does not go to sleep. Now suddenly, when I select Shut down - the MacMini does not shut down but obviously working in a loop. I have to do a hard power down.

iMac 27 locking up after sleep mode requiring full power shut down and rebooting in safe mode then shutting down and rebooting normally.. Permissions and this check show no errors, the only error sleep mode failure. Boot up is very slow as well as wake up when possible is slow. Yosemite seems to need a new release in order to correct the boot problems. System operates more like a Windows machine than Apple machine what's going on?

I have a new MBP 13". When I'm using the Mac it's mostly connected to AC. Over night it's mostly sleeping without the AC connected. My question is, if I should let it sleep at night or should I shut down the Mac regarding to maximize the battery life?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI Can't figure out what is going on; I've played around in the battery settings; but maybe I'm just too Green to my used 17 Inch Macbook Pro that I bought 3 months ago.
I used to have a full battery at night, close the lid go to sleep and have hardly any battery loss first thing in the morning.
Now, I close the lid or even manually put the Macpro to sleep ( from the apple menu ) and wake 8 hours later with " NO" battery.
whats going on? what do I need to check? what do I need to set? this is getting frustrating.
the battery is still strong get about 3 hours on a full charge; it's a mac battery; so It must just be settings or something I need to do in the software.
Is it harmful to my macbook to leave the lid open in sleep over-night for iAlarm? I know it seems slightly naive, but is sleep different when the lid is closed versus open?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm having a problem with my PowerBook G4 where is goes into sleep mode at random times. Mostly when I am streaming video..or at times the fan comes on, it sounds super high then boom. sleep mode again. After hitting the space bar, it comes back on, but it'll happen again shortly after. I've played with the sleep settings
View 5 Replies View RelatedAs of last night, my MBP started acting very strangely. After entering my username and password, it would enter the desktop for a short period of time and then kick back into sleep mode; the screen would turn back to black. Sometimes it will let me stay on the desktop for a long time and other times it will hardly let me stay on the desktop. I called apple support and they had me start the computer in safe mode; even then it occasionally kicks me out.
The tech guy said that it was a "strange software issue" and not a hardware issue. I thought it was a hard drive issue; my hard drive makes an odd sound when it unlocks (a grinding sound), but it has been doing that for quite some time with no issues. I tried to reset the SMC and it didn't do anything.
How should I remedy this problem? Is this a hard drive issue? Hard drive failure? Has the grinding sound finally caught up with me? I am running OS X; not leopard or snow leopard. I know I need to upgrade, but this shouldn't be happening.
My iMac seems to wake up often in the middle of the night and in the day when I'm at school. I was wondering if there's an app/pill that can attempt to do the opposite of Caffeine: keep my Mac asleep at night. Does anyone know of such a thing? I doubt it exists, but then again sometimes I doubt I exist.

Newbie here, It has just come to my attention that my 27" iMac wakes up during the night. It is always put to sleep at night rather than turned off. My parents are staying for the weekend & sleeping in the same room as the imac, & mentioned this morning that screen turned on a couple of times during the night. I looked at the time machine back ups & found it had made 2 during the night.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been shutting down my MacBook Pro OS X10.7.3 at night.I just read that OSX runs "maintenance" procedures early in the morning (between 3:15 am and 5:30 am) and that if Mac is powered off at that time, that these maintenance procedures will NOT run.True or False? AppleCare says that it won't make any difference and I won't be affected if these night procedures never run. But, if that's true, then why are they set up to run at night? ? I went to the Apple Manual but it does not address my question.

Someone please explain me in detail when it's best to put a MBP to sleep and when to shut it down.
Personally, I shut down every night and boot it the next morning.
I had some weird issue with my MBP last night. I let it running when I went to sleep so it could finish a download for me. The battery was fully charged, and I've done it in the past, and MBP would just go to stand by after it finished the download. But this time when I woke up it was turned off completey. I thought it was the battery, so I connected it to power to charge it again, and all of a sudden my MBP turned back on without me pushing any buttons or so. I than had to sign on again and when I checked the battery it wasn't empty, so MBP should have gone to sleep instead of shutting down.
After I signed on I was told that date and time had been set back to the original settings and I had troubles connecting to the internet. When it finally worked again after about 45 minutes I was asked to allow configd and mDNSresponder access, that also never happened before...
Is there anyone who could explain to me what happened or what might have caused this?
When i shut my computers lid it doesnt go into sleep mode. Every few seconds the fan would start up, and a few hour after i shut the lid when i open it the computer is still warm. I need to know if this is normal, if it can be adjusted, or if something is wrong with my Macbook Pro?

I just bought MBP 17 i5 model a couple days ago from a local apple store(Keystone Mall). and I calibrated my battery yesterday. The thing is I know MBP should sleep when the battery is really low(running off reserve) then when the battery drains out, MBP should do the "safesleep" thing where it stores the current state of the machine so that upon turning the machine back on by supplying the power to it or after charging, MBP returns to the stored state.
But, when i was calibrating my battery, I did get the low battery warning(reserve battery blah blah) but then it drained down to 0 then the screen flickered(literally made a flicking sound) and went dead. When I got up in the morning I plug the adapter on and turned the MBP on and MBP just freshly boots.. rather than restoring the previous state..................
How come when i press the sleep on my MBP it auto shut down?

My macbook has developed a problem where when the lid is shut and the power is connected it wakes up from sleep and then goes back to sleep and repeats this process every 30-60 seconds.
What's weird is it doesn't wake from sleep and get stuck in this loop whenthe lid is open and the power is connected and I select sleep from the Apple menuwhen the lid is shut and the power is NOT connected and is running from the battery
I recently updated my mac to Snow Leopard and put in a new HDD and since doing so the problem has been occurring.
I have a first gen MBA 1.6, and recently (like two days ago) every time I close the lid it shuts down. It doesn't happen all the time, but it does happen more times than it doesn't. Booting it up after, a window tells me a kernel problem has occurred.
Sorry, no real knowledge of the underpinnings of how software works - so if any of you have ever experienced this, or have some tips or diagnoses, I will certainly be thankful for it.
I've got a G5. After a short while I turn on the computer, the computer will freeze. If I boot in Safe mode the computer is working fine. I removed few items from the start up,I used disk utilities to verify and repair permissions, but no it keeps freezing when I start up normally.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am running Mac Mini as a home server (turns out to be not a great idea, btw), and even though I set the preference to never sleep or shut down, it does go to sleep when there is no activity for long time. Since I am using it as home server, it should stay awake all the time or at least wake up from sleep when there is incoming ping from other computer, but it just goes to sleep.
