2011 Macbook Pro Crashing On Sleep (and Other Random Cases)
Jun 12, 2012
I am a proud (albeit frustrated) owner of an early 2011 Macbook Pro 15" with the i7 2.2GHz and the ATI 6750 HD.I am running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E53) with the latest updates as of June 12 2012. I have been a big Macbook fan ever since my 2007 white core2duo macbook, but have been experiencing a problem with the latest beast. My problem is, as the title states, crashing upon sleep. The laptop will randomly crash when in use at times, though I thought that problem was a bit too vague to post about here. However, the crashing on sleep issue pretty specific.Basically, to reproduce my problem, all I have to is let my Mac fall asleep with the lid open. After a couple minutes of being asleep, it will either wake up or stay asleep with the activity light steady and dim. The ratio of crash to not crash seems to be roughly 7 to 3. The only way I have been able to fix the issue is to perform a hard shutdown and reboot. Upon rebooting I get an error report, but I'm not sure if that is related to the crash, or just the fact that I shut the computer down the hard way.
I heard that the 6750s sometimes have issues and crash a lot. Should I take this sucker in before my warranty expires and get it looked at?when I boot into Windows 7 via bootcamp, I semi-frequently get a crash when the screen looks fuzzy for a split second right before it reboots. This happens randomly, although I have noticed it happening sometimes when closing a 3D intense program (read: game). But it has never crashed during the 3D intensity. This is only a post-script becuase it could just be the fact that I'm using Windows on a Mac that is causing it to fuss.

My Macbook Pro 13' 2011 will play random audio clips periodically, lasting from 1 second to 30 seconds. They seem to be advertisements and stop right in the middle.

When I'm working, sometimes it goes to sleep without any warning, also with a full battery. It never happens when the magsafe is connected. I noticed that when I wake the macbook again, in the battery icon (top-right), there is a "X" instead of it's capacity%.. Therefore I blame my battery for the random sleep. (the "X" dissapears almost immediately after waking up)
Here is a copy-and-paste of the console log:
Code:
9/05/08 16:25:42 kernel System Wake
9/05/08 16:25:42 kernel Previous Sleep Cause: -60
When I let it go to sleep in a normal way, it says 5 in stead of -60. Does anyone knows the meaning of the -60? Google doesn't..

There is a problem of a periodic signal loss. The reason for this is the password reset network settings in the airport. It happens randomly during sleep. The system log says only connect and disconnect from the network. What may be the reason?

After installing 2 Corsair 4GB memory sticks (for a total of 12GB) my less than a year old IMac (mid-2011) started crashing like crazy. Everything indicated that they were installed properly, ie, About this Mac, Activity Monitor, etc...
As soon as I opened up any application or even a single browser window--CRASH.

I have a late 2008 uMB running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and every time I wake my computer up from sleep, 3 or 4 of my open applications will crash. This has been happening since a few weeks after I installed Snow Leopard. This always happens with firefox, netnewswire, tweetie, and sometimes iTunes. There are also a few other programs that do this intermittently. This becomes very annoying because 4 crash report windows will pop up, and I will lose all my open tabs and anything I was doing with those programs.

I'm using an iMac (late 2011) with 10.7.3. I'm doing things on the computer or some process is going on when the screen instantly goes black (no dimming first). If a video was playing, I can still hear it playing, but pushing keys on the keyboard or mouse or pad does nothing to wake the screen. Sometimes pushing the power button a number of times will get the screen to come on, sometimes it won't. When the screen goes black, if an external drive was running and then stops, I can sometimes get the screen to come to live. Sometimes this black screen happens when I'm burning a DVD; when the DVD is finished, I can bring the screen to life. I thought one of my two external drives was bad, so I disconnected it. That seemed to help (though verifying the disk revealed no problems). But a few minutes ago, the screen instantly went black again; no dimming first. There have been times I thought this was associated with a new bit of software, but then it returns even after I delete the suspect software. Sometimes I have to use the power button to shut down the iMac then restart it. Once, I had to unplug and replug the iMac before I could get the computer to respond and the screen to return to life. I don't know if this is a hardware problem (internal or external), a software problem, or some combination...or something I haven't thought of, at all.

This is an odd, intermittent problem that started about a month or two after purchasing my fall 2011 MBP 15 (i7 2.5, 16GB RAM). This problem started, went away on its own, and now it's back after about two months of being trouble free. When I close my computer, it doesn't go to sleep. The slit light on the right front of the computer does not go into its slow flash mode; however, it does light up solid, and theng it stays lit. When I open the lid, the computer wakes up immediately (it was never "sleeping" to begin with), but then after a second or two the screen fades to black. The screen can be brought back to life by pressing either of the brightness buttons on the keyboard.I took it to the Genius Bar, and of course I couldn't replicate the problem for them. When I got back home, I decided to test the computer plugged in, and that's when the problem came back.I don't know why it went away previously. So, in summary: The issue only occurs when the computer is plugged in.The sleep problem existed before I installed 3rd party RAM and Parallels 7, and they exist now after I have installed the RAM and new software.I use a wireless mouse, and the little dongle has no effect on the sleep issue - the computer will not sleep (when plugged in) either with or without the dongle in a USB port. The battery charges just fine. All of my software is up-to-date, and I'm running OS X 10.7.3I have checked for the Flashfake malware, and I do not have it.I am running Sophos Anti-virus; I have done a scan, and have found no threats. They flashed my PRAM and ran some tests at the Apple Store and everything passed.

Longtime lurker and future MBP Arrandale owner (feels good to say it out loud). This will be my first MBP, but I got a small question about the cases/sleeves which is being sold by the Apple store. If the MBP comes out this week, will the current cases/sleeves fit the (new) MBP exactly? I want to buy a case or sleeve.

Installed the update and what wasn't a problem is now a problem. The computer will not connect to wifi without me telling it to after coming out of sleep. Was not an issue with 10.7.2.

I've seen several threads about the Speck cases not fitting properly, forcing people to have unsecured connections with the new Magsafe, and some filing the cases down to fit the computer properly (see this thread Just wanted to let everyone know that I emailed Speck and asked when they would have properly fitting cases available for sale, and they wrote back saying in 4-5 weeks they will be available.

I moved overseas and for practical reasons I started to work with 2.5 HDD WD 5400 rpm but now I got over a dozen drives for storage and I am full of external cases everywhere. I need a solution of one or two multibay cases that allows me to solve the problem not spending much money, I do not need a raid arrangemente and it can be any connection type except esata.

I'm considering getting a hard case for my new Macbook, mostly considering the Speck See Thru Satin since I can't really find other good products, and was wondering if they scratch the aluminum on the macbook? I know people have said that hard cases have made it even worse from debris getting in between the outer Macbook casing and the hard case but I was wondering if there was something special, either about the new aluminum Macbooks or the See Thru satin, that made this not happen.

I just bought my first macbook pro (15-inch) and want to keep it in good shape. Any suggestions on shells, cases, or stick on protectors that are good for use on this computer? I have seen the ones that apple sells such as the speck products, and there are also ones like invisiShield from Zagg.

I have a White Macbook (early 2009) model and its starting to crack and break around the screen bezel and keyboard. I have heard that Apple were aware of this problem and was offering free replacement parts for affected Macbooks. Is this still the case and if so what is the process of booking in my Macbook for repairs.Â

I just ordered my MBP 17 inch and I want to encase it in plastic, but I can't find the Speck or Incase hard shells since they are sold out... ??Could it be that they are re-working them for the new mag-save adapters ?
