I am using a macbook pro. Normally the device shown on iphoto sidebar (below trash) will gone after i eject my iphone. But recently, the iPhoto cannot unmount the devide automatically. I have to either restart my mac or manually right click on the device to dismount it.

I want to plug in my computer into my USB dock, automatically mount my external HD, have TimeMachine do its thing automatically (so far, so good), but then immediately after the backup finishes, I want the computer to automatically unmount the HD. This will allow me to close the laptop and go somewhere without having to constantly eject the HD everytime I unplug the computer.
So - what I need is a program / script / etc that will tell the computer to eject the drive as soon as TimeMachine is done backing up.
I just bought a Seagate Expansion drive, and it has no power button so when it has been plugged in and not in use for a while it unmounts, and then a minute or two later it auto mounts, is there any way to stop it from unmounting and automounting automatically? I would like to control it myself if its possible (id also prefer not to pull the plug each time i want to shut it off).

I believe my computer must have automatically downloaded and upgraded the version I previously had. Now I get an error message that reads: The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto. Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete. I still need my images able to be read by previous versions since I go back and forth editing between older desktops. Is there a way to access the photo library without okaying the upgrade? If I reinstall an older version of iPhoto, will I lose the existing library of photos?

For example, my Mac Pro tower has 4 disks and when I boot up all 4 disks are mounted. Then, when I turn on my Macbook Air and turn on my MacBook Pro, those laptops show up in Finder as shared. The Macbook Pro is partitioned, so it would be nice if I could specify which disk to mount in Finder.

So lately I've had this issue when I restart my computer: iPhoto starts up and lags the initial start up of my laptop any time I power up. Not sure if this is a re-post, but i've searched everywhere and haven't found an answer on any post. I do run parallels on my laptop, and when iPhoto starts up on a restart it shows it being connected to my Windows HD. I tried renaming any "image" folder within the HD to a different name - no luck! I have no other external USB devices plugged in. I do not have it set to open at login on the dock, nor is it on my "Login Items".

I also have another laptop with more iPhoto images/videos... my problem is that I don't have a burner to get the images off these HD's nor do I know how to combine all the images on an external.Is it possible to (like in iTunes) assign an alternate device for storage of your iPhoto library. I used to be able to "automatically" (click on icon in mail) to add/import a picture that was an attachment to an email I received in my inbox to iPhoto by one simple click on an icon in the header area of the mail.

I am trying to reinstall Lion on my macbook pro, but every time the hdd shows up as 'locked' and when I attempt to format it, it gives me a "volume erase failed with the error - cannot unmount disk" message. I have a MacBook Pro running OSx 10.9.4 and have been successfully using Time Machine with a WD My Passport External Hard Drive for a while. Now (after 10 days with a successful back-up), the computer will not back-up. I have gone into disk utility and tried to erase, partition, and/or repair the disk, but repeatedly get error messages - it can't erase the disk, re-partition the disk or unmount the disk.

A few months ago my cdrom started not wishing to eject my cd stating it's in use (when it isn't). It shows up on my desktop fine, but won't eject. I have to restart and hold down the trackpad button for it to release the cd. That was all fine and dandy and though annoying I can deal with it...however... My computer is not allowing me to open up .dmg files. I have stuffit...I have the standard diskmount that is default in mac computers but when I tried to download firefox and another program they put a .dmg file on my computer but neither will open up and unmount! So why would a download not unmount...nothing for a .dmg is unmounting on my computer. I tried opening stuffit and it appears like it'll open but doesn't...stays in finder just like when I try to unmount the files. Now that I have the .dmg on my computer I want to delete them because if I can't unmount them they're of no use to me. However, my trash won't let me saying they're in use.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a 15" MacBook Pro on my hands with some sort of HDD issue. The machine suddenly stopped booting and so my first thought was that the HDD has failed or that the filesystem had become corrupt. My files were all backed up, so I went ahead with a reformat and reinstallation of Lion. At firat Verify Disk, run from the Lion boot disk, reported numerous errors that Repair Disk couldn't fix. Fair enough. I swapped the old drive out for a new one that I knew to be good. (And, in the meantime, reformatted the old drive while attached externally to another machine without issues -- so maybe there's nothing wrong with this drive after all?) But no dice this way either: Lion reinstallation fails with an uninormative error message ("An error occurred while preparing the installation."). And if I attempt to alter the partition structure of either drive (either the known-good drive, or the original drive) or to erase the drive, I am told that the partition could not be unmounted. I find this odd, since I have booted off the Lion install DVD, not the HDD in question.
So, I'm left to conclude that something is faulty. I think I can rule out the drive itself -- I have two drives that exhibit the same symptoms, both of which behave fine in another MacBook Pro. I also think I can rule out the SATA controller/logic board since there are no evident IO problems with the DVD drive and, other than the HDD issues, I can run the Lion installer (as well as an Uuntu LiveCD) without difficulty. So what's left? Could it be the SATA cable?

I've been having problems booting into my OSX partition. At the time it started I wasn't using my Macbook Pro (Late 2009) very often so whenever I needed I just booted up into my BOOTCAMP partition. Anyways, I decided to finally stop being lazy and do a clean install. There's nothing on either partition of the same hard drive that I want. I put together a bootable USB drive and boot from it. From here I go to the Disk Utility and try to erase the entire drive. It gives me this error: URL....
Now, that's not a screenshot from my mac but its the exact same error. Anyways, I've tried to find something on point but I just can't. Some posts have stated that the hard drive is broken, but if that's the case why can I start up the BOOTCAMP partition of the exact same drive flawlessly? I can even manipulate files on the OSX partition from Windows 7.

My external hard drives simply refuses to eject/un-mount, and I've done everything I can think of to terminate any processes and/or applications that may be using the drive and preventing it from being ejected properly, but I haven't had any success. Is there some Mac-Jedi way of going about isolating what might be preventing this drive from ejecting properly? I've scoured the activity monitor but can't figure out what might be preventing the drive from ejecting?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a 2.5" hard drive connected via USB to my MacBook that keeps unmounting itself. This happens under some (what seems to be) undetermined amount of time, the drive will all of a sudden unmount itself and disappear from the Finder, Disk Utility, et al.
Is there some fix, setting or work around for this? Very annoying. If not, is there a way to re-mount the hard drive without turning it off then on or reconnecting the USB cable?
My Mac Pro [with 4 internal disks, 2 External Disks (Sata Raid 0), and several external FireWire disks and a Voyager disk station] has a little problem with letting externals go Since a few weeks I have a problem with unmounting my externals. After unmount, the unmounted disk will mount again immediately.No time to disconnect cables and/or power. Hinders disk management, backup, and simple disconnecting disks. It only happens with disks (FireWire 400/800/ SATA and USB alike). USB sticks work fine.

I want to carbon copy my bootable external drive to my main internal bootable hard drive so I tried to use Disk Utility to erase it but it will indicate that it failed and can't unmount. When I tried to manually unmount by dragging it to the trash it indicated that it is in use. I can't understand why it's in use since I booted from the external drive which I wanted to the copy to the internal drive.

So, it unmounts them, but still says they're there. And the remain so until I restart I assume. CDs/DVDs/DMGs and all. Probably should add, when I go to unmount them the first time, I get "An unexpected error occurred (error code -36)
