Software :: Safari Can't Make A Secure Connection?

Apr 30, 2010

For several of the accounts on my iMac, I've set parental controls to "try and limit access to adult content" When I do this, Safari stops being able to access "https" websites such as gmail.com etc. If I set the parental controls setting to "unrestricted access" the problem goes away. I don't want the kids to have "unlimited acess" but I do want to let them access "https" sites as appropiate. I've seen several old threads on this subject, but nothing so far that I could find related to it being caused by the parental controls or how to fix it. I'm running OS X 10.6.3 on an iMac quad core. I'm also very new to the Mac world (6 month) so I'm pretty much at the beginner level.

Hardware :: Airport Extreme Failed Security Test - Can I Change Any Settings To Make Network More Secure

Aug 27, 2010

I just purchased an Airport Extreme (802.11n) to replace my old Linksys router (so that I can have wifi). After I have everything installed, I went to Symantec's Security Check page and ShieldsUP! page to make sure my connection is secure.

[URL]

To my horror, Symantec says that one of my ports is OPEN (ICMP Ping), while all others are CLOSED. In my limited understanding, this is definitely not the most desirable situation--not as good as my old Linksys, whose ports are all reported as STEALTH. ShieldsUP! just said that I failed because of the open ICMP port.

My questions are:

1. Is this the best Airport Extreme can do?
2. Am I safe?
3. Can I change any settings to make my network more secure?

I can't find much info from Apples' documentation and the Support website.

Software :: Unable To Reset Master Password / Super Secure Lock On System

Nov 11, 2010

I recently purchased a used imac g4 from a friend but I cannot seem to get it started. I tried to log in with the master password but do not have the password or install disk for OSX. I asked my friend about it and he said the same thing, he lost the user and master password including install disk. I took the comp from his hands anyway, it's in new condition and he never really used it, just forgot about it I suppose. It also seems that on startup the mac searches for disks and servers, so it could of been a part of a network system???????

I would like to know if there is a way to get into the bios and reset the whole system without password prompts and all that. Which is the best way to do this?

I have the mac osx install disk from my ibook but I tried to boot the disk and it's not booting. I also have the install disk for os tiger and that's not booting either. There must be a super secure lock on the system.

OS X :: Unable To Make Any Changes On System Preferences / Put Parental Control On System

Mar 29, 2010

could not be sure whether the Admin user - password reset with the CD would be the solution to my question as suggested in previous threads I searched - and have no idea where my start up install CD is

So my question-

I was trying to put parental control to ask for password when my computer starts up. I did something I guess and messed up the info.

I can log in with my own account when I restart my apple - which says now it is a standard account (must have messed that up)- but can not make any changes on system preferences or anything else that requires login and password. It requires Admin info. My own login that I use now used to be my admin so do not have any other info set.

now on system pref - accounts - an account titled "test" seems to be admin but can not even access that and reverse myself to be the admin since I can not unlock system pref. Or cant click on "Login Options" for the same reason.

There are no other users on this computer than me.

What do I need to do to make myself admin again?

Hope this was somewhat a clear question

Mac Pro :: Secure Empty Trash Is Secure?

May 10, 2010

I have about 60 GB of data on a new 750 GB drive that I want securely erased as I am passing that drive on to someone else.

Zero out the drive or do a 7 pass is secure BUT takes a long time for 750 GB

What if I drag those files to trash and do a SECURE EMPTY TRASH - much quicker as I am not writing 750 GB of zeroes but is it as secure?

MacBook Pro :: Cannot Make Changes To System HD - Partition Layout Greyed Out

Mar 5, 2012

I recently reformatted my entire drive and reinstalled Lion with the official Lion USB recovery tool/usb. Now in disk utility the Partition Layout option is greyed out and I can not seem to re partition my disk. I´ve tried repairing my disk rights but still its greyed out.

I ran a demo of iPartition and this message was flagged:

"You cannot make changes to the disk from which your system booted.

To make changes to this disk, you should either boot from an external drive, use Target Disk Mode with another Mac, or create a bootable CD/DVD." Does this mean I can only make changes with it when booting with the usb? This doesn´t make sense as it worked on the default startdisk before. Does anyone have solution?

OS X :: How To Make Text Bigger System Wide

Nov 8, 2010

Im trying to help my mum set up her imac and she has asked me to help make the text bigger on the screen. Ive shown her how to zoom on word/safari/etc, however ideally I want to make all the text on the computer bigger - eg. menus at top of screen, finder text, etc...

The first thing I tried was adjusting the display resolution from 1920x1080 to 1600x900 or 1280x720, but this seemed to make the screen blurry.

Does anyone know if there is any other way that I can help make the text bigger for all system elements?

OS X :: 10.5 System - Partition Inactive - Make Active Again?

Mar 10, 2009

I am using an EXTERNAL seagate 250gb drive formatted with the apple partition map on a osx10.4 system with no problems (intel based). I then plugged it into a 10.5 system (ppc system), it displayed some message which I ignored, perhaps to my peril, and began to backup some files and the transfer was moving quite slow. The drive was unplugged before the transfer was completed. I now try to use the drive on my 10.4 system and even-though the partition is still visible (in disk utility) it is not active (the drive is in black font but the partition is in grey font). Did the 10.5 system possibly make the partition inactive, if so how to do i make it active again? When I attempt to verify the disk, it reports that there is an "INVALID SIBLING LINK" and tells me that the volume needs repair. I try to repair the disc and it fails "INVALID SIBLING LINK" and the "THE UNDERLYING TASK REPORTED FAILURE ON EXIT" I would really like not to have to take this to a data recovery service and I am not tech challenged so I don't think I need to do this as the Hdd didn't fail, I hope.

OS X :: Make A Bootable Clone Of The Whole System Discs?

May 19, 2010

I have an old G4 system with Pro Tools recording software and related Plug-Ins installed and running flawlessly. Bad news is that the drive is about 9 yrs old and I want to make a backup before selling it to someone so they can have a bootable backup drive instead of having to re-install the whole system if the internal drive craps out.

The OS is 9.2.2. It is not classic and has no version of OS X on it t all.

How do I make a bootable clone of the whole system discs, apps an all, to an external firewire drive?

OS X :: Function Hot Key - Make Swap Instead Of Having To Open Up System Preferences

Nov 7, 2010

I know how in keyboard preferences to mark the check box that says "Use function keys as standard function keys," but my question is, is there a way to use a hot key to make this swap instead of having to open up system preferences, navigate to the proper pane and tab, and click the box? I have a couple programs where I absolutely need function keys to be function keys, but for general purpose use, I need the function keys to be the spiffy stuff printed on them.

Ideally I'd love for the system to look at what app was in the foreground (that is, has control of the menu bar) and recognize this app as needing access to function-function keys and make the swap for me, but I don't think this is possible at the moment, and having a hot key to change it would be the next best thing.

MacBook Pro :: Using Secure Empty Trash

Oct 11, 2010

Basically, I am 'securely emptying my trash' as we speak. With that said, why exactly does it say that it currently has to empty around 400 something files? Does that include every single file I've deleted in the past, not using the 'secure empty trash'?

Also, once if I deleted my download history, not using 'secure empty trash', is there a way to retrieve it and use 'secure empty trash' to empty it once again?

I'm just a little confused about the 400 something files being deleted using 'secure empty trash'.

MacBook Pro :: Not Accessing Some Secure Websites

Jun 6, 2014

Have updated clock and Apple ID locations. For some reason I am not able to access some bank websites from my Macbook, I just get a "Safari can't open the page "xxxxx" because Safari can't establish a secure connection to the server "xxxxxxx". I can access these sites on the same network with my iPad. These are the options I have eliminated:

BROWSER: Tried Safari, Firefox, Chrome. all with the same result (different message of course).

MODEM: I have connected the Macbook to different wifi networks (home and at work) with the same result, so it is not a modem issue.

I currently write this post at work on a Mac Mini. The Mac Mini CAN access these websites without issue. This leads me to conclude that something deep in the duldrums of the MacBook itself is preventing access to these types of websites.Macbook Pro is late 2012 model running Mavericks 10.9.3..Work Mac Mini is running Lion 10.7.5

MacBook Pro :: Cannot Secure Delete Trash

Jun 26, 2014

I have a late 2012 Macbook Pro version 10.9.3.

Attached to this are two external hard drives: Both are SeaGate, USB 3.0, 3TB, and are formatted to the ExFAT system.

I use these mainly for purposes associated with my job as an wedding video editor.

About a month ago, I received a few files from a client that they wanted to attach to their video and upon editing them I tried to delete the originals but was unable to as I got this message: "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items". However, all other trash that I put in there is deleted when I secure delete so I'm sure it's not a problem with the system but rather with those files.

I have researched the problem online and have found some suggested solutions:

1. That I need to change the permission on the file in order to delete it. When I checked the file information it reported that I was able to "Read and Write" as with every other file.

2. I attempted the following suggestion that I found on another forum: Advanced tip about deleting locked filesIf there are several locked files in the Trash, you can unlock them all at the same time at the command line. Follow these steps:Open Terminal. It's located in /Applications/Utilities.Type: chflags -R nouchg Note: Type one space (not pictured) after nouchg in the line above, so that it ends in "nouchg ". Do not press Return yet.Double-click the Trash icon in the Dock to reveal the contents of the Trash. If necessary, arrange the Finder window so that a portion of the Terminal window is still visible.Press the Command-A key combination to select all files in the Trash.Drag the files from the Trash to the Terminal window. Note: This automatically enters the pathname for each file. This eliminates the need to individually empty multiple Trash directories, particularly when multiple disks or volumes are present.Press Return. No special text message will be shown indicating that the command was successful.Empty the Trash.

This did not work either as when I attempted to delete the same message appeared.

So my question is this, how do I permanently delete these files? Do I need to buy third party software to do this?

MacBook :: Making Secure Empty Trash Can?

I've been having this problem where i can't simply "empty trash" and have to click on "secure empty trash" as it the only thing that appears !

To empty a trash can, it deletes 1 item per second and it's getting very tiring and long. Before, i didn't have the "secure empty trash" and wish to get the normal "empty trash"
