OS X :: Snow Leopard Fresh Clean Install Fixes Bugs?
Jan 24, 2010When Snow Leopard came out, I backed up via Time Machine and did a clean install, then restored via Time Machine. Ive been having three main problems, among a few small ones. When I right click the dock, half the time it freezes, denying access to the dock or finder for a good minute or two. Also, front row puts tagged tv shows in the movie section, and catagorizes them as "various" in the tv show section. On top of all that, safari is acting up.
Ok so I was planning on upgrading the ram to 3GB, the HD to 500GB, and do a fresh install of snow leopard. I'm assuming that time machine backs up all the system files and garbage that clogs up the system, so I'm planning on just dragging the files to a external hard drive, installing snow leopard on a brand new 500GB drive, then moving my files back. Will this fix my bugs? Or should I just install leopard instead? Btw leopard ran pretty slugish after a while, and sl did make my computer faster, but I assume the ram upgrade will keep leopard up to par.

Apr 21, 2012This nonsense: To upgrade your Mac to OS X Lion, you must be running OS X Snow Leopard. If you have OS X v10.5 Leopard, purchase OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard now and install it on your Mac. Then buy OS X Lion as a digital download from the Mac App Store- seems very very un-apple.
So let me get this straight: I have to install an outdated OS (snow Leopard) in order to install Lion. ???
Remember when an OS was self contained, not an add-on upgrade feature?
I am puzzled- I would simply like to boot my mac pro from leopard (current os), and install LION on a newly placed, freshly formatted internal hard drive on same computer. Why would i need to have the intermediary step?
The folks at apple store couldn't answer- even the genius folk weren't sure- dissappointing at best-

MacBook Pro :: Sudden Shutdown Without Warning - General System Error
Apr 23, 2010I've had my MBP since Oct of 2007. About 2 weeks ago it would not turn on so I had the logic board replaced. After I got it back it would randomly shut down, the only solution I could do is take out the battery and work at the lower clockspeed but it still shut down without warning, just less frequently. I thought it might be the power cord or the battery so I got those replaced but it is still happening. The first day I had the battery (yesterday) it worked fine, no random shutdowns, I calibrated the battery per apple instructions and today it worked great (during charge up and plugged in at full charge) for about 5 hours, then it shut down, I turned it back on and it shut down shortly after, I reset the SMC by taking out the battery and holding down the power button and putting it back in and it shut down again.
Then I tried to run the hardware test and it shut down again so now I am posting this out of frustration. I also reset the pram and it shut down again. Now it won't stay on for more than getting through the login screen. I don't have applecare but they replaced the logic board for no cost (which I don't fully understand), I'd rather not take it back but I will if you guys have no ideas. I looked up (with difficulty) the previous shutdown code: -2 (http://www.macwizard.com/errors.html) and it said it was a "General System Error (VBL Mgr, Queue) -2 vTypErr invalid queue element" but I have no idea what that means.

Sep 4, 2014I don't know why but, I cannot change the option of scroll bar in General, System Preferences. Every time I turned it to "Automatically based on mouse or trackpad", it always changes back to "Always" the next time I launch the System Preferences.

Jul 1, 2009my iMac won't turn on. The day before yesterday happened the same thing, but after a few tries with the power button, it eventually turned on - and all ok yesterday. Both the day before yesterday and today, the general power was turned off for some minutes, but the iMac wasn't running. So now, I've tried to reset the SMC, removing everything attached, but nothing.
At least I can clearly hear the tic tic tic button, probably of the timer, because I set up a schedule to let it turn on at a certain hour. What can I do? It's a white iMac, never had a problem.

OS X :: How Can I Improve System Performance Without A Fresh Install
Sep 28, 2009My system (sig) has been relatively sluggish for a few months now. Right now I've only got Firefox, Snak, iTunes and Adium open and it's just prodding. It has a decent amount of ram that should be able to handle relatively easy computing like this.
So, my question is, what can I do? Should I just re-install? I wouldn't really mind doing that. I have all day off, and fresh installs are fun but I have a good amount of stuff on here. I have an external where all of my important stuff is, so a fresh install wouldn't be a bad idea in that way.
This machine is pretty old but I'd like it to be snappy like it once was.
Are there little things I can switch off or something?

OS X :: Unable To Make Any Changes On System Preferences / Put Parental Control On System
Mar 29, 2010could not be sure whether the Admin user - password reset with the CD would be the solution to my question as suggested in previous threads I searched - and have no idea where my start up install CD is
So my question-
I was trying to put parental control to ask for password when my computer starts up. I did something I guess and messed up the info.
I can log in with my own account when I restart my apple - which says now it is a standard account (must have messed that up)- but can not make any changes on system preferences or anything else that requires login and password. It requires Admin info. My own login that I use now used to be my admin so do not have any other info set.
now on system pref - accounts - an account titled "test" seems to be admin but can not even access that and reverse myself to be the admin since I can not unlock system pref. Or cant click on "Login Options" for the same reason.
There are no other users on this computer than me.
What do I need to do to make myself admin again?
Hope this was somewhat a clear question

Basically I want all apps removed when reinstalled complete. I've read OSX reinstall its different then windows, but I want to make sure I can do this clean reinstall. I want to know if the other documents and files will remain on my hdd as I don't have an external disc to back up. Oct 31, 2010I'm still running a 2007 Macbook Core 2 Duo, 2.2GHz. A few upgrades here and there - mainly 500GB HDD and 4GB of RAM. Running the latest software of everything - and it does the job. Up until video conferencing - Skype, iChat - doesn't matter, about ten minutes into a chat the video quality will severely deteriorate until it freezes entirely. I remember when I orginally got this computer this was never an issue - something that only built up over time.I've formatted this computer and started fresh about 3 months ago - the issue still persisted even after a fresh install.I think the issue is dust in the computer. Dust builds up, computer gets hotter faster and as a result, slows down.During a video chat the CPU temperature spiked to 90c and stayed around that area until the chat ended. The other temperatures were not nearly as high, with the Wireless module around 75c, and CPU cores spiking to 85.

Sep 13, 2009So I upgraded to Snow Leopard about a week ago, and my Macbook pro seems a little slower and it beachballs now and again. I am wondering if I should do a clean install of Leopard and use that for a while, until SL is updated a few times, or maybe clean install and then put SL onto that. Which do you think is best? My other questions are as follows:
I was doing TimeMachine backups when I was using Leopard, and these have carried on when I was using SL. If I clean install, will I be able to choose just to copy my files over from the TM backup? Is there a way to do a clean install of SL, or do I need to do the Leopard install and then upgrade to SL again.
Software :: Restoring After HDD Change And Clean System Installation
Mar 9, 2009I have just upgraded from a 60GB HD running OS X 10.4.11? to a 250GB drive.
Before changing HDs, I backed up the old HD onto an external FireWire drive using Retrospect Express 6.1.
I made a clean install of 10.5.6 onto the new HD, installed Retrospect Express.
I then restored my entire old HD to a *folder* on my new HD. There is room for it on the external FireWire disk also if that is better.
I expected wrongly to be able to use Migration Assistant to integrate my applications, e-mails, calendar, bookmarks, etc. into 10.5.6 but it did not allow me to select a folder to migrate from (I think it is looking preferably for another Mac attached via FireWire or at least an external disk, but I'm not sure what it's limits are).
I am also now concerned about Migration Assistant losing data (such as filed e-mails) as I have consulted with a tech friend who says it is problematic and I should restore by hand!Can you tell me the most efficient and reliable way to get out of my predicament? I'm crazy busy business-wise and I don't have time to lose wallowing & finding my own way, I can afford the time to do things right though :-) which is why I'm asking.
Obviously I am shut down now, I do not want to start doing "real work" on my computer until all my applications and files are in their proper places.
Applications (Quark, Adobe, Apple), all my Mail accounts, iCal, Fonts, Firefox + extensions & bookmarks are my mission-critical tools.
