My system has been locking up the last few days. I see the beach ball and on my istat bar my cpu shows I'm at 190%+ ???Safari is the one program that is open. I have managed to turn off my internet connection so Safari can't be sending or receiving any data ... I hope. Do I have a Virus? How can I force Safari to close? The beach ball prevents me from closing Safari in the usual way. I have very limited access to my iMac Late 2009

OS X :: SL Beach Ball Options For My System

Oct 29, 2009

I recently reformatted my mbp because the filesystem crashed and I couldn't repair it. Everything works fine except it beach balls a lot now and it's driving me crazy. It will beach ball quite frequently for like a minute or 2 randomly. This never used to happen until I reformatted it. I ran the disk utility repair and it still beach balls. I think its just a bad install. I have the Early08 MPB and Snow Leopard.

Mac :: Beach Ball - Windows Slowing Down My System?

Nov 23, 2009

I started off with Parallels 4 and installed the 64-bit Win7 but then decided to switch back and do 32-bit instead through Windows OS because I noticed it was running a little slow. There's no difference though but now I can't go back to 64-bit. Now I'm using Parallels 5 and there is no difference. I just transferred my system from Parallels 4 to 5 and not a reinstall. Furthermore, I'm trying to run TeamFortress 2 off steam in windows and the only way it can be somewhat playable is when I turn all the video settings completely down but even then water reflections completely freeze up my computer.

PowerPC :: System Making Weird Noises / Permanent Spinning Beach Ball?

Apr 14, 2007

1.33 Ghz) has started acting up, and while I think I know what the problem is, I'd like some confirmation. The symptoms:

After starting the PB up, it runs for about 5 minutes before we get a permanent spinning beach ball. When the beach ball is up, I hear what sounds like (and is coming from) the hard drive. It sounds like it's spinning either way to fast, or as if something is wrong with it. All the open programs freeze, and we do a forced shut down. Also, the first time this happened, we had a song playing in iTunes. The song would play a 2 second clip, then stop, then start, and continue to stutter.

We've tried turning the computer off, unplugging the battery and the power, but it still does this.I think it's a hard drive problem, and that we need a new hard drive. Does this sound correct?

Mac Mini :: System Hangs At Gray Screen On Shut Down / Beach Ball Delaying Certain Processes

Sep 1, 2009

I have the 2.53ghz with 4gigz of Ram MacMini from Xmas 2009.A few of you know that I had been trying out different SSD's before finally jumping on with OWC 60gig SSD. I've had it for about 2 months now and it works great except I've recently been having my computer freeze and the beach ball of death appears constantly when on Safari and sometimes iMovie. After shutting down the computer manually, sometimes booting up will leave me at the grey screen for minutes before i shut it down and wait maybe 30 mins before i fire it up again, which usually works 9/10 times.

I also noticed the beach ball delaying certain processes like loading Safari or a webpage. For example, I have my OWC External hooked up via FireWire800 with just my music and videos, however occasionally if im browsing thru websites or loading a program it'll cycle the external and have the beachball as if trying to load something before proceeding. It is more an annoyance than a problem.

I ran disk utility on all my drives as well as the Apple Hardware Test CD to see if maybe my Logic Board was the problem. I did the general test as well as the indepth test, both show negative signs of a problem. Can anyone shed some light on what could be the problem?Should I put the factory drive back in and take it to Apple to run their diagnostic test?Could the SSD be failing? (I could RMA it, but didn't know if its an Apple issue vs OWC)

Mac Pro :: Slow Beach Ball - Take Ten Second For Dictionary To Come Up After Clicking On Look Up Dictionary

Dec 24, 2009

I still get beach balls when doing the basic of things. For example, it sometimes takes 10 seconds for the dictionary to come up after right clicking a word and selecting "look up dictionary". Then again, sometimes it is instant. Similar things happen when looking at a document that is a .pdf, for example, and I want to save as a jpeg. Whether I go to "save as" or through the "print" and then selecting "save as a pdf", it can beach ball for 8-10 seconds.

I thought it may have been a ram problem and from another thread I discovered the "activity monitor" and have that running constantly in the dock showing me "System Memory" and for the stuff I'm doing, it hardly ever gets close to half the pie chart.

MacBook Pro :: Slow Boot - How To Make Fast

Dec 18, 2010

I have a 2008 2,4 MBP and I have a problem with it. I was using snow leopard and everything was going fine for a few months. Then suddenly, it froze on the desktop at the opening. After few minutes, and command+ctrl+Shift+esc, and a few prayers it sometimes came ok.

I got tired of that and decided to format my hard drive and reinstall osx. I had to do it 3 times before it worked. Then I installed the updates and BANG! New problem! Now it was booting for 6 minutes before I see the desktop.

OS X :: Slow Ethernet Connection - How To Make Fast

Mar 21, 2008

I am running an Ethernet (hardwired) connection from my Comcast modem to a Netgear WNR834B v.2 router then to my iMac 20" 2.16Ghz (previous white version)'s Ethernet port. I did this because I have been experiencing slow connection and frequent drop-outs (gets disconnects frequetnly when playing WC3). Now that the same problem still exists when using this wired setup. Whenever I open up Safari and go to a webpage , the page hangs while loading, and it will take about 10~20 seconds to get the page fully loaded with pictures and everything else. If I unplug the Ethernet cable that goes to the iMac from the router, and then plug it into the modem (so that my iMac is connected to the modem directly), the connection speed is blazing fast, and the webpages would fully load in no time. Therefore I am wondering what might be the cause of the slow Ethernet connection? Is it my router since that connection speed is super fast when connecting to the modem directly?

PowerPC :: IMac G5 Really Slow/how To Make Fast?

Jul 20, 2008

I got a white iMac G5 about a year ago. Everything has been working fine until recently when I started to notice that its REALLY SLOW. What I mean by this is that whenever I try to open an application, load my widgets or basically do anything, it is really slow and Im seeing A LOT of beach balls. Just as i started typing in the title for this tread, it gave me a beachball. This computer is not that old so it should still be running smoothly.

Does anyone know why this is happening?

btw: I have 1GB of RAM, but it still operate really slow when I only have a few application open.

MacBook Pro :: Slow Internet?how To Make It Fast?

Aug 6, 2010

Been months and issue is still the same, why does my desktop work blazing fast online from browsing to loading streaming videos etc. And my Macbook Pro can't, its a little slower browsing online which I can put up with but youtube, rottentomatoes, basically any streaming type site sucks. And it doesn't matter whether it's by wireless or connected directly by ethernet. It just buffers like every 15 seconds (does the samething on Safari and Chrome). I mean before my 4 year old HP laptop died it could load videos on those same sites almost instantly with no buffering.

I have a friend with an Imac that does the same thing, and a buddy brought over his MBP 15 and same thing happened like at his house, and I showed him how fast the desktop is in comparison.

I just moved to a new condo, have high speed internet from Comcast, and its def not the internet since the desktop works perfect. Any ideas on what to do as I use this MBP more being I carry it around the place and its so irritating knowing how quicker my desktop is, and that desktop is 2 years old.

I've tried different DNS etc and that helped a little bit (was a lot worse before) but still sucks, this is what I have inputted from this forum under DNS servers:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
4.2.2.1
4.2.2.2
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

Hardware :: Slow Wireless Internet/how To Make Fast?

Jan 27, 2008

After running an internet speed test I find that my download speed is only running at 1MBps, despite paying for 5 MBps. The upload speed was as advertised at 500 KBps. So after firing off a nasty e-mail to my ISP (DOH!) I try to troubleshoot the problem. Lo and behold, if I plug the notebook in directly to the cable modem it runs at 5MBps! Is there some internal setting either in the computer or router that is slowing me down? FYI I am purchasing the .n technology soon with time capsule and a new iMac...but this old notebook won't handle it.

the details:
PowerBook G4
1.5 GHz
1.5 MB Ram

Airport Extreme Basestation 802.11.g speed

Cable Modem running at 5MBps

MacBook Pro :: Slow Torrent/download Speed - How To Make It Fast

Aug 31, 2010

I recently purchased my first Mac computer, a MacBook Pro with Intel Core 2 Duo processor. I receive free internet included in my apartment rent, and I don't use a router, instead I simply plug into the wall. I previously used a Toshiba laptop with Windows Vista and there was no problems. I am not very knowledgeable about computers really, especially when it comes to the internet. I need advice on how to speed my downloads, but speak to me like you would 2 y/o.

I can't seem to find anything that applies to me or I can understand. I'm currently using Transmission for torrents and Safari for browsing, but my general internet connection outside of downloads seems to be fine.

Mac Pro :: Remedy For Spinning Beach Ball?

Aug 11, 2010

Sometimes I will go for a while without using my computer. For example, if I step out for a meeting or lunch. Other times I will just be using an application that does not need to access the data drive which is a WD. When I come back to my computer or try to access the data drive I get the spinning BeachBall. For example, I just came back from being out for a couple hours. I came back to my computer which was not sleeping, only the monitor was. I launched Safari and after going to a few web sites everything was fine. Then I went to [URL] and the spinning BeachBall came up and then I heard the WD drive kick in (like a jet firing up if you will). Then the website loaded and the spinning BeachBall was gone. Here is what I have in System Preferences:

EnergyComputer Sleep: Never
Display Sleep: 1 hr
Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible: CHECKED
Wake for network access: UNCHECKED

Does this have anything to do with having Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible: CHECKED? If so, does this mean if I UNCHECK it, the drive will continue to spin until I either a) shut the computer down or b) put the computer to sleep? And, this will remedy the spinning BeachBall? I am using WD RE3 drives so if the above is true, do I need to worry about the drive spinning 24x7 if unattended and the computer never sleeps?
