MacBook Pro :: Finding Recommended Way To Run VMFusion Or Parallels?

Aug 17, 2007

Trying to get my boss to agree to let me have a MBP. I will have to run Windows for access to Access and I just wondered if anyone could recommend which way to go: VMFusion or Parallels? Or perhaps Boot Camp.... although I would prefer, ideally, to have both Win and OX running at the same time, rather than having to choose at boot-up.

MacBook Pro :: Bootcamp And Parallels - Recommended Partitions?

Oct 19, 2010

Im thinking of buying a mac, i've always used a windows pc though. Im gonna see what happends tommorow at the mac event but I want a Mac Book Pro. i want to dualboot mac os and windows 7 using bootcamp, parrallels, and refit. I've been doing some research on it and I would like some expert opinions on recommended settings to partition the disk. should I do 50/50 split or what? I'll either get a 320 or 500gb hard drive. I also see that some people split it three ways and have a 3rd partition for shared files, such as music, documents, ect. is this recommended or is this not really needed to share files between the 2 OS's? I'll probably be using windows OS more often or atleast use parallels alot until i get the hang of mac os. I also want to be able to sync itunes on both the windows and mac os, so it doesnt madder which operating system im on if i want to listen, download or sync my ipod, is there a way to do this? And lastly, I use outlook to download my comcast email via pop3. Is there a way to sync outlook in windows and outlook for mac between the partitions? I can not find any answers to this question online. Any opinions, recommendations, or thoughts about these subjects or buying my first mac in general is welcome.

MacBook :: Finding Recommended SSD Drive?

Apr 12, 2009

I have a white macbook , its one with intel GMA950, and 3 GB ram ( tops at 3 gb )

I want to get an inexpensive SSD drive, I don't need that much space in the drive , I just need it to be fast, so I thought a 64 GB will fit my work easily.

The thing is, which model is the cheapest/safest for <= 200 USD.

Mac Pro :: Finding Recommended Video Card For 2006

Oct 27, 2009

So here's the deal, I've currently got a 2006 Mac Pro with an ATI X1900XT video card and a 23" ACD.

I'm looking to add two more displays to my setup (most likely 24" Dells) for a total of 3 monitors and would thus require 2 graphics cards.

So here's my question, would I be able to keep my current X1900 card and add a second card? If so, what card would people recommend?

Software :: Finding Parallels Alternative?

Anyone know anything about new software that is comparable?

Software :: Parallels 6 Has Been Out For A Bit. - Finding Feedback Or Opinions?

Oct 4, 2010

I admit I was pretty skeptical given the quirkiness and general flakiness I saw in Parallels 4. I used the demo for 2 weeks and ended up switching from Fusion 3. The feature set is now on par with Fusion, and it actually does seem quite a bit faster. I'm undecided if I like the snapshot/time machine setup yet. I'm wondering if anyone has had problems doing full restores using this setup?

The conversion was mostly painless with one two minor hiccups. A blue screen the first day I started using it with my work XP image, and the time zone was apparently set to Central America instead of Central Standard (apparently that bug has existed for a very long time...get on the ball folks, it looks bad).

Windows On Mac :: Finding Expert Advice - Using 7 (Bootcamp And Parallels)

Dec 26, 2009

I have a new 27" iMac with the i5 processor, Snow Leopard, and 8GB of Ram. Using the secondary display trick, I was able to successfully install Windows 7 (64 bit) with Bootcamp and it is working great. But I also have Parallels Desktop 5 (latest version) and am having troubles with it running Windows 7 from my Bootcamp partition.

I was able to get the virtual machine installed and Windows 7 will boot. However, it takes a LONG time to start the virtual machine and hard drive access is VERY sluggish. To be clear, Parallels itself loads fast but once I start the Windows 7 virtual machine, it takes 5-10 minutes to loads. But even after it loads, any time I do something to access the HD, it is very slow. For example, if I try to play a game, it'll take a long time to load the game but once it gets loaded, it runs great. So I know it's not a memory, CPU, or GPU issue. I have 4 GB or Ram dedicated to the virtual machine.

Now I thought I read something about Parallels having trouble with Windows 7 when using the Bootcamp partition - something about a HFS reading problem from a Bootcamp driving or something?

My Mac is booting into the 32bit kernel of Snow Leopard and the Windows 7 installation is 64 bit? Would that be causing a problem?

I also have Macfuse and Paragon NTFS installed on the Mac. Would those be causing a problem?

Specifically, what do you think could be causing the very slow hard drive access in my virtual machine? I wasn't able to find a solution at the Parallels website.

Would Parallels provide me with a better user experience by installing Windows directly via Parallels OR by having Parallels utilizing a Boot Camp Partition?

Windows On Mac :: MS Office Suite - 2010 Via VMFusion 3.0 Or 2011?

Nov 7, 2010

I'm switching over to a MBP in a couple weeks after being a lifetime user of a Windows-based computer. I am an engineer and for the foreseeable future will be using a Windows-based computer, namely the Microsoft Office Suite. This might be a lame, but one of my biggest concerns is the transitioning process that I would have to go through to learn the new Mac Excel 2011. I know exactly where everything is the Windows version, but spent more time than I thought I would have to when I went to visit the Apple Store and played around with Mac's version of Excel.

The Microsoft-Apple designers definitely didn't have strict limitations on making the two versions to be close copies, in terms of table structures. In theory, I would like to use Window's Office 2010 on my new MBP instead of Mac Office 2011. However, I'm interested in hearing advice on why this might be a good or bad idea. Is there anybody else that chooses to do this, or are there gains by using Mac's Office software exclusively that I haven't considered.

this is done by using one 2GB DDR3 stick and one 4GB DDR3 stick.

as the new macbook pros can take up to 8GB.. and there are only 2 ram channels, it will mean that they will use two 4GB sticks of ram.
