MacBook Pro :: Make An External Drive Startup Disk?

Jun 2, 2012

I am thinking about how to add extra storage to my macbook pro, and thinking that the simplest way would be to get a WD 2T and boot from that as a matter of course. I would use the internal drive for back-up. The reason for this is that the 1T internal is getting full. The other option is to replace the Super Drive (DVD/CD Drive) with a 750G, and have the dvd/cd drive external. What is better?

OS X :: FW800 WD Studio Turbo Drive Not Working As Startup Disk

Mar 23, 2009

I have just purchased a WD Studio Turbo extarnal/portable 320GB drive to use as a back-up and spare start-up disk. (I normally run Disk Warrior from an external.)

I have backed up my Macintosh HD to this WD drive using Super Duper and Super Duper indicates that everything has been copied ok.

However, when I plug in the FW800 cable to my MacBook Pro (old version) and restart holding down the Option key it doesn't show up as an alternative start-up disk.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Expand The Size Of Startup Disk With A FW800 External Drive?

Jun 2, 2012

I wasn't sure if it wouls be a bad idea if I wiped the interal hard drive while I'm booting from a recovery disk, then made a RAID 0 with the internal drive and my FW800 external drive. I'm nearing my max for the internal drive. I have a second FW400 drive backing up with Time Machine. I was hoping to just wipe, make the raid volume, and then restore from the Time Machine backup.

I guess even before that, my FW800 is not working in Lion. I reformatted while connected by USB, reset power management, and reset PRAM, but the firewire bus panics and takes out the Time Machine on FW400 as well. Is there a fix for this somewhere that I'm missing? I bought the FW800 drive for the above reason, only to run into a wall trying to make it work. I really don't want to do a RAID 0 with a USB connection.

I'm not going to try setting up the RAID 0 until I get the FW800 drive working reliably, but I was hoping to kill two birds with one stone.

MacBook Air :: How To Clear Start Disk / Hard Drive Of Clutter

Nov 30, 2014

I have been trying to download the new Yosemite update and kept getting an error message regarding the download. When I finally figured out what was going on, it appears that I don't have very much room on my hard drive to allow Yosemite to download. As you can see, the large problem is found in the movies and other categories. This brings me to my question.

1.) How can I clear up the 'other' clutter effectively, despite not knowing what falls into the 'other' category?

2.) Without having an external hard drive, is there a way to transfer movie purchases from iTunes to either USB drives or something simple to free up some more space? I don't want to outright delete anything, as I'm afraid that I'd lose the purchase, and therefore, the money spent. However, I'm not opposed to getting an inexpensive external hard drive.

I don't have a CD drive--just 2 USB ports and 1 for a memory card, so hopefully that won't inhibit storage options.

MacBook Air :: Cannot Update Applications Because Startup Disk Is Full

Aug 29, 2014

I cannot update my applications because my start up disk is full.

I have :

- emptied downloads and email downloads folders

- placed all bulky documents in dropbox and external hard drives (movies, pictures, etc)

Despite all this, I still have no clue where half of my computer contents come from (about 60GB totally unidentified)

I have downloaded Tidy Up - it found 6000 duplicate documents on my computer but ask me to pay to delete them!

how I can clean the contents of my computer for free? What is taking so much space? Where do I need to look?

Applications :: Genius Feature In ITunes - Exact Usage?

Mar 20, 2010

I've never even turned on the genius feature in iTunes, because I was put off by the link to the store. I have no intention whatsoever of buying anything from the iTunes store, though I do have an account cause I had to buy something else online. Here's my strong suspicion about Genius - that it's really there just to sell you crappy tracks from iTunes. And I have no use for that noise.

But, I like to keep an open mind. What if I'm wrong, and what if it's actually a cool feature? I remember not being sure about the shuffle function, since I like to listen to albums, so for the longest time I didn't use it. But one day I gave it a go, and what do you know. I liked it, for the most part! Here's one additional complication - I got like 50,000 songs in my library and I listen to all kinds of genres. Tell me about Genius - how do you use it?

OS X :: Disk Warrior Unable To Replace Startup Disk / Connect To TC To Transfer Across DW's Preview

Feb 18, 2009

Yesterday I switched on my macbook (Leopard) and got the flashing question mark. Ran all the resets and booted with disk utility which encountered an 'Invalid B-tree Node' when attempting to repair the disk. Additionally, the SMART status was verified.

I ran DW 4 last night, and performed the hardware tests which reported that the disk was operating like normal. The majority of my media files and additional work is backed up to my Time Capsule but I still have a folder of papers that are relatively new, and wanted to retrieve. While DW managed to reconstruct the majority of my drive (there seemed to be 15g missing - but it's just music files) including this folder, it couldn't replace the disk, as it encountered 'Serious Disk Malfunctions'.

So, via the Disk Preview I want to transfer my saved folders to my TC, but I don't appear to be able to locate it (via ethernet) through DW - even if it's connected when I boot up in DW. So, first request is: Can I connect to my TC to transfer across in DW's preview?

Second is: What are my options if DW can't replace? Do I need to take it into Apple and get a new HD (it's out of warranty)? It's possibly worth noting that I'm a student and have absolutely no money - so cost effective options are a bonus!

MacBook Pro :: Folder With Question Mark At Startup - Disk 0 Showing In Disk Utility

Jun 24, 2014

I get this question mark along with a folder when starting up. I tried holding down the option key when turning on the power and then I get an internet recovery along with a globe. I click on the arrow below it and it takes maybe 15 minutes to start up. Then i get this disk utilities screen. I'm now unable to do anything. When going into disk utility, disk 0 shows with Mac OS X base system underneath it. All the clickable buttons are faded out. Is there something wrong with the hardrive? and where could i get this fixed? There isn't a warranty on it.

MacBook Pro :: Applications Don't Start After Hard Drive Upgrade?

Apr 23, 2010

I'm running a late 2008 Macbook Pro. I exhausted my efforts to clear up unneeded data on the internal drive and still found I needed more. So, I bought a Hitachi 500gb drive which others had purchased and used in their MBP. The drive installed fine and I was able to restore everything from a Time Machine backup so that the system booted up on the new drive as it would have before.

Trouble is, most applications no longer work. Safari, Mail, iCal, QuickSilver and Onyx I know for sure won't start up. I get this error message:

Quote:

Safari cannot be opened because of a problem... Check with the developer to make sure Safari works with this version of Mac OS X. You may need to reinstall the application...

I tried reinstalling a couple of apps but they all still delivered the same error message. Also, opening the Dashboard crashes Finder and the Dock.

Is there something I did wrong in upgrading the drive? Is there some way I can fix this without having to start everything over? Is there ANY way to transfer all of my data and settings and everything over to the new hard drive? Or will I be forced to do a fresh install of MacOS?

Also, FYI--Google Chrome seems to work fine. Thus my ability to post this question on the forum.
