MacBook Pro :: Booting Time Not That Fast After Installing The New Intel 160GB Ssd?

Nov 5, 2010

I just replaced my HDD with the new intel 160GB SSD. Everything is amazingly fast except for the booting process.

After I shut down the computer(which is extremely fast, about 3 seconds), I start my MBP, yet what's been puzzling me is that the time between pressing the button and appearing of the Apple logo last at least 15 seconds, after that, everything is just normal (fast, fast!!).

I wonder if this is normal,

MacBook Pro :: Odd Booting After Installing Lion On 2010?

Feb 18, 2012

I installed Lion (10.7.3) on my mid-2010 MacBook Pro today. I noticed that when it boots, it starts the normal gray screen with Apple logo, then after a second it flashes and then a warmer shade of gray with Apple logo appears before logging in. Why does my computer do this? I have searched high and low on the internet, only found one thread where anyone mentioned this and that person never received a suitable reply other than "me too!". I've watched YouTube videos of various Macs booting Lion and have not seen this anywhere. Does anyone know why this occurs and if it is normal or what?

MacBook Pro :: Why Does Firewire Prevent From Booting From Time To Time

May 28, 2010

This has been the case for at least the last 3 machines I've had. Occasionally if you have firewire 800 plugged in the machine will not boot or sometimes the machine will hang and go into spinning wheel and only if you unplug firewire will it come out of it's hung state? When you boot you sometimes end up a white screen and only if you unplug FW800 will you get past that point.

I tried plugging in the USB drive and restarting the computer while holding down "c", this proved to not work.

Any way that I can erase the computer completely and fresh install from my USB drive?

PowerPC :: G4 Not Booting After Installing New Hard Drive

Apr 11, 2010

My newly acquired "ibook G4 1.33ghz 12 inch" is having problems booting just after recently insatlling a brand new WD Scorpio Blue 160GB hard-drive. I installed myself with the very useful [URL] tutorial which ran through the process quite simply. Basically the background story here is, I was given the ibook by a friend of mine who didn't want it as she didn't have the patience, money and time to invest into having it fixed. Some three years ago she dropped it from her coffee table and since then the hard-drive started failing, getting louder and slower to eventually one day not switching on at all. She took the ibook to an Apple Genius bar in LA where they ran diagnostics and resulted it with having a failed hard-drive.

She never had it repaired and has since been keeping it stored away as a spare. She was kind enough to gift it to me, I was well up for the challenge to repair it so here I am!! So, I bought a new hard-drive, successfully installed it and then the moment of truth, the ibook DID switch on, this itself was good news. But ever since I haven't been able to progress any further, as when I switch the ibook on it makes the apple start-up sound then goes to a white screen and says this:
Invalid memory access at SRR0: ff8486a4 SRR1: 00003030
Apple PowerBook6, 7 4.9.3f0 BootROM built on 07/05/05 at 11:14:11
Copyright etc.

Then says:
To continue booting, type "mac-boot" and press return
To shut down, type "shut-down" and press return
Reducing system power
So if I type "mac-boot" it goes to a grey screen with a folder icon in the middle containing a little 'finder' face and a flashing question mark, and then if left for about 5 minutes or so it just switches itself off. Of course it occurred to me that there is nothing on the new hard-drive so it can't boot from anything, I tried using my intel mac's start up disk which has OSX tiger on it, but this doesn't give any better results, I start-up holding C and I here the disk being read but it can't boot from it, it still goes back to the OpenFirmware screen as above.

Hardware :: Slow Ethernet And Very Fast Wifi? / Using Time Capsule

Dec 1, 2009

I'm facing a very misterious issue with my internet connection, using a Time Capsule; If I use a network cable to connect to the Time Capsule, the connection to the internet is very slow (Maxes at 2mbit, never more). If use a wifi connection to connect to the same Time Capsule, internet is flawlessly fast, reaching well over 80Mbit.

I checked and the ip is always the same, the downloads are the same, at the same time. Even trying with 2 computers (a Macbook and an iMac) (one over wifi, one on ethernet cable) the one using wifi can download stuff way faster. If I switch connections the one using wifi is always faster.

I use DHCP for both ethernet and wifi on the same local network, all the machines can see each other, it's just the internet connection that becomes so slow when using ethernet. The local network as as fast as a gigabit connection allows. The Time Capsule has the latest firmware installed, and has no problems at all besides this internet issue.

OS X :: Spotlight Index Weights In At 20GB On A 160GB Disk?

Oct 7, 2010

I usually had spotlight search disabled, cause I don't really use the search at all .. well that was until yesterday I was looking for a file on the backup drive. Needless to say it took quite a while to find it, so I went back to considering spotlight again.

Long story short I switched on indexing for both the local disk (160GB) and the USB Backup Disk (1.5TB) and left spotlight running over night .. it is not quite there yet .. but the index is already almost 40Gb in total .. that is 20GB locally and then another 19GB on the USB disk.

So my question .. is that normal? Does spotlight store the index of the external disk locally again? I can't imagine the index of the ~100GB I have stored locally to be that big ..

Is it something normal while indexing and will reduce itself when it is done?

People usually report their indexes well below 1GB for larger disk than I use here at least that was what I found googling.

OS X :: 160Gb Is No Loger Working / New Internal Drive And GUID Tables

Apr 14, 2009

I bought a 320Gb external HDD which was to replace my internal 160Gb drive in my Unibody Macbook.

I used SuperDuper! to copy my original disk on to the new one, then swapped the disks. My 160Gb is no loger working, which is fine, but I want to install a fresh OSX on to the new hard drive. I can use the Disk at the moment but the mac can't boot from it. I need to hold down the option key and select it at startup, I presume because of the format/partition type.

When I try to do a fresh install of OSX, I get an error saying cannot install on this disk because of partition type (GUID Tables).

I'm not allowed to do anything to this disk because I can't 'unmount' it, so, can I run disk utilities from my install DVD? before mounting the disk?

Software :: Takes Long Time While Booting

Apr 29, 2008

so a few days ago I tried to install a package of new fonts using font-book. I tried to (stupidly) install something like 1500 fonts at one time, which eventually crashed my machine. When I restarted my computer, it loaded all the way to the desktop where it stalled for like 10mins and then eventually started working OK. Now everytime I restart it, the same thing happens- I get to the desktop and all that loads for the first 10 mins is the little search icon in the top right corner. I tried the restore disks and used the 'store everything in a "previous system" file' option because I am really trying to avoid a clean erase. I've also tried clearing my cache and doing a nvram clear. Nothing has worked so far. The computer is acting like it is doing a lot of extra work in the background but I can't figure out what. I am tempted to think it might have something to do with some junky fonts I tried to install but that sounds too simple. I am running a g5 Imac on 10.4.11.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Restore From Time Machine To A Non-booting Mac HD

Feb 5, 2012

My Mac HD has been playing up for some time and today it finally decided to not work at all. This was after I had installed 10.7.3 yesterday. I booted from my OS Leopard CD and installed it on my second HD which is usually used for data storage.  I did try to restore the Mac HD from my Time Machine backup but I kept getting errors and the computer (MacPro early 2008 model - 6gb ram, 300gb HD)  kept rebooting.

So the computer now boots from the second HD and I have repaired the Mac HD and verified it but it still will not boot.  How can I use Time Machine to restore the system to the now non-booting Mac HD?  When I try, it wants to do a backup of the new booting second HD which doesn't have all of my apps, docs etc (which are all on the Mac HD still).
