This has been the case for at least the last 3 machines I've had. Occasionally if you have firewire 800 plugged in the machine will not boot or sometimes the machine will hang and go into spinning wheel and only if you unplug firewire will it come out of it's hung state?When you boot you sometimes end up a white screen and only if you unplug FW800 will you get past that point.

I've recently upgraded my MacBook Pro into MAC OS X 10.6.2 and I started to experience a low booting time (over 17 seconds). Another issue, when I start the computer I always get the starting screen where the apple logo is shown as zoomed. I tried to check the display but its fine.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just replaced my HDD with the new intel 160GB SSD. Everything is amazingly fast except for the booting process.
After I shut down the computer(which is extremely fast, about 3 seconds), I start my MBP, yet what's been puzzling me is that the time between pressing the button and appearing of the Apple logo last at least 15 seconds, after that, everything is just normal (fast, fast!!).
I wonder if this is normal,

so a few days ago I tried to install a package of new fonts using font-book. I tried to (stupidly) install something like 1500 fonts at one time, which eventually crashed my machine. When I restarted my computer, it loaded all the way to the desktop where it stalled for like 10mins and then eventually started working OK. Now everytime I restart it, the same thing happens- I get to the desktop and all that loads for the first 10 mins is the little search icon in the top right corner. I tried the restore disks and used the 'store everything in a "previous system" file' option because I am really trying to avoid a clean erase. I've also tried clearing my cache and doing a nvram clear. Nothing has worked so far. The computer is acting like it is doing a lot of extra work in the background but I can't figure out what. I am tempted to think it might have something to do with some junky fonts I tried to install but that sounds too simple. I am running a g5 Imac on 10.4.11.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have had problems after latest update - parallels, airport loss etc. so I thought about restoring my mac with time machine, but after inserting leopard dvd, I only get the initial leopard "galaxy" screen, nothing else. Tried holding c key, via disk utility, etc. Cant boot up in safe mode nor single mode. Wondering wether it is because I am only using an external screen - the screen of my macbookpro went a long time ago.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy Mac HD has been playing up for some time and today it finally decided to not work at all. This was after I had installed 10.7.3 yesterday. I booted from my OS Leopard CD and installed it on my second HD which is usually used for data storage. I did try to restore the Mac HD from my Time Machine backup but I kept getting errors and the computer (MacPro early 2008 model - 6gb ram, 300gb HD) kept rebooting.
So the computer now boots from the second HD and I have repaired the Mac HD and verified it but it still will not boot. How can I use Time Machine to restore the system to the now non-booting Mac HD? When I try, it wants to do a backup of the new booting second HD which doesn't have all of my apps, docs etc (which are all on the Mac HD still).

my computer takes too much time to boot or reboot after switching to Lion, additionally I found out that there are duplications to the applications I am using so 2 Application Support folders and so on, means also wasting space of hd but probably long booting time is caused by that as well.
After searching a bit I found that this is a users issue, but since I am the only user I don't think this is necessary to have, so is it ok to delete and how the users option.

I have a powerbook which I've been told can only boot it's OS through firewire only. My question is can any of you recommend an external firewire hard drive? I'm after a 1TB of storage as anything smaller isn't ideal. I don't want to spend bucket-loads, but I know that the option of firewire costs more, so I'm prepared for that. I've been told not to buy any Western Digital drives as they don't like to be used as a booting drive (for older macs I think anyway). I also wanted to know, could I used the hard drive to boot my OS from and also use to to save additional files, or is that a disaster waiting to happen?

I'm wondering if the speed difference with Firewire 400 over USB 2.0 is worth the extra $30. I'll primarily be using this for Time Machine backup, but also to store other large files when necessary.
I've just started using time machine and actually surprised how well it works go apple. One question I want my time machine drive bootable just in case. Right now I am excluding the system library and user library cache folders from backup at the moment. Thats ok right? It doesn't affect boot ability or anything else serious right?

At home I use both...However when I fix the time on Windows Vista that makes the time on Mac OS X wrong...I know this is a dual boot issue...is there any fix for this? I don't want to use a laptop carry to and fro either. Instead, I am thinking about booting from a firewire 800 disk (7200rpm), and functioning from exclusively. I can take the drive with me, whenever I need to have all data with me at a home machine � more importantly I am hoping I can boot from the same disk on my home iMac and do what I need to do. I just tested it out for to see if the performance is acceptable � I can barely tell the difference! (perhaps a bit longer to boot - but that's about it). My work computer is 27" iMac Core i7 2.8GHz with 8GB ram and my home unit is 24" iMac Core2Duo 2.8GHz with 2GB ram. Will booting OS X on two different machines and changing files get me into troubles down the line? I know that some applications won't like it as they look at the MAC id for license authentication. Any other issues that I should be aware of?

While typing this post it's gone from 3 hours 23 mins to 4 hours and five mins....it started at 2 hours....now it's up to 4...very odd. Any ideas on why this has started happening all of the sudden?
View 3 Replies View RelatedAfter a few months of confusion, I think one of my USB ports is dying. I had been plugging a My Passport HDD into my left USB port and a fan/hub (plus other things into the hub) into the right USB port. I had been having problems using Time Machine even with a HDD attached to my computer, so I figured the HDD was bad. I bought a new one (Seagate 1.5TB at $120) and planned on using another 500GB drive I have for Time Machine.
At the same time, I had been plugging my new iPhone 3GS into either ports on a hub on that right port chain or directly into it. The phone would eject and reconnect a lot when doing that. When I tried it on the left USB port or even connected to that hub coming off the left port, no problems. I plugged up a different HDD to the right side. It also began ejecting and reconnecting from time to time.I think my USB port is going bad, but I'm not sure because I have never had one that worked well and then stopped on a factory-built system. The only other time I had problems was when I bought a big, fancy PC case with about 800 ports and one or two out of 500 on the front wouldn't work. This is a much bigger problem on a MacBook Pro. If this port does sound bad, would it be worth investing in an ExpressCard USB port card? I have a good 4 or 5 devices that I need plugged in, but I think I can manage using the fan/hub device for most of it.
My date and time resets each time my mac sleeps or is reset or if I open date and time options. It keeps sending emails of my old reminders from 2008/2009 from ical and my to-do list emails me its reminders. This happens every time I open my comp or even just open date and time options. I also get the ical reminder notification that pops up freezes on my screen.

I have looked into this a lot already. It is to much that Time Machine backs up every single hour! It would be nice to set it to something like 3 or 5 hours. I have tried a 3rd party app to do this, but... If my computer was off or asleep when it was supposed to back up, it would get an error. It would not just do the backup when i turned it on or when it came out of sleep like stock Time Machine does. I have also seen a way to change the time incraments in the Terminal.(I am very good with it, not a noob) I have tried this and it screws up time machine completely. Maybe it does not work with the newest OS X. By the way... I have a 2010 MacBook Pro, got it 2 months ago.
Does anyone know a solid 3rd party app, that will work seamlessly. Or has anyone changed the time in Terminal and are currently using something different than 1 hour. There is a lot of examples online, but I would like the codeing that you literally used.
So here is my bright idea. I still may want to have Windows on my iMac for work projects *sigh* I think I came up with a solution, I rather not partition my iMac (when I buy it) 1TB drive for Windows. Don't want Windows on my main disk - I need the storage for Mac things, personal stuff etc. Is it possible to boot from a Firewire connected external HDD to run Windows?

Its been about a little over 7 weeks of ownership and I have noticed it for awhile but now it bothers me a little. I use my MBP 15 i7 4gb ram HD AG in class/school majority of the time. In class I use my MBP at about 1/2 brightness (compared to full) in this fixed setting I have had the brightness flicker between bright to slightly dull and back. I have not dropped my MBP nor any other sort of damage so that's out of the question.

I was trying to set up my Time Machine to an external hard drive. I didn't continue because it asked to "initialize" the hard drive which I had a lot of important things on.
I have another external hard drive I'd like to use but, my Time Machine has this error code of -43. What is this and how can I use my Time Machine on another external hard drive?
I'm getting a new 13" MBA, upgrading from a 2006 macbook. I have it all backed up to time capsule. Can I just connect the MBA to my time capsule and restore the macbook image?
