MacBook Pro :: What Is The Mystery Icon That Flashes On Wake
Feb 14, 2012
Twice now I have seen a strange, black and white icon that flashes momentarily upon waking my MacBook Pro from sleep. It looks vaguely like an Apple remote. It goes away almost immediately.
For no apparent reason, now when I create a new mailbox, the first column header contains a mystery icon consisting of two arrows, one pointing northwest and the other pointing southeast. When I right-click on the headers, there is no corresponding item in the pop-up menu (e.g. Attachments, To, From), so I have no clue what it is, nor can I hide it. Mailboxes I created prior to whatever it is that changed do not have this icon. I have not changed my OS, nor the version of Mail I am using. Can anyone tell me what this icon/column is for, and how I can get rid of it??
This is a mystery. I recently switched a number of files and applications between computers, installing some stuff from a 2001 vintage iMac on a Mini, OSX 10.4.11. Now when I go to shut down the Mini, up comes the closing warning box. Previously, pressing the return key would activate the Shutdown, now nothing happens so I must always click the Shutdown box using the mouse.
Last night when I went into Itunes there was a basicly a hd in my shared folder with a couple hundred tunes and movies on it that I had never seen before. I actually clicked on a couple and they worked, I watch a bit of a movie. so I know I wasn't seeing things !
My scenerio is I live and work in a hotel. The HD in the shared folder had a name "colb's mp4". Since I could, I checked the hotel registry and saw the registered name in the room across from me was Colby...... How did he do this and how can I prevent this from happening again? My room has a hard wired connection and as far as I can tell he has a wirless connection??
When I opened my Finder folder today I saw: jdwp Transport.H listed (second file from the top) I have no idea what this is or where it came from so I tried to trash it. But, The plug in your Admin password to make changes pops-up. And after the Adobe flash-player virus headache I am cautious to plug-in my Admin password. Is this something I should be concerned about?
In response to a report earlier this week pointing out that many of the applications in early builds of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard are dramatically smaller in size, a number of developers have weighed in to explain where all those missing megabytes went. Bryce C noted that the extra heft in Leopard's apps does indeed come from localization files, which are used to distill all of the text strings and other variables that differ between languages. Depending on the language preference set by the user, the operating system accesses the desired language files and uses them in conjunction with the common application code to simplify developers' work to deploy their apps to worldwide markets. Inside each application's bundle file in Mac OS X are NIB files, shorthand for the original name of the tool used to create them: NeXTSTEP Interface Builder. NIB files also contain any graphical resources used by the application. During development, Interface Builder is used to visually arrange the program's interface controls -- from buttons to scroll lists -- which are then mapped to actions. The original XML files used during development are named "designable.nib," but these files are not supposed to ship with the finished application. The final NIB files that are included with the finalized application are much smaller, and can usually be compressed even further.
Running these NIB files through a simple file compression results in dramatic disk savings. Bryce noted that the XML and HTML files stored within the bundle of Leopard's Mail shrink from 289 MB to 96.6 MB with a simple file compression, resulting in a file size comparable to the new Mail delivered in the Snow Leopard beta release. Apple earlier applied a similar technique to preference .plist files, converting them from plain human readable XML text files into compressed binaries to save space on disk. The added overhead required to compress and uncompress these files in the background as they are read from and written back to disk is insignificant. While Apple may likely be expanding the use of background file compression to save space in Snow Leopard, today's Mac OS X Leopard is unnecessarily overweight due to an error Apple made when packaging the system, according to a developer who asked to remain anonymous. Leopard apps all contain superfluous designable.nib files that should have been removed in the Golden Master. "Mail alone has around 1400 of these files, taking up almost 200 MB of disk space," he noted. Other suspected reasons for the dramatic weight reduction included lighter weight, resolution independent vector graphics and the removal of PowerPC code.
However, the same developer explained that "most of the artwork in the applications is the same as it was in Leopard. Snow Leopard is, sadly, not much further along in resolution independence than Leopard, at least in the developer preview." The move to vector graphics may make a small additional impact on tightening up the system, and even graphical interface elements stored as bitmapped art will benefit from the file compression noted above. As for the removal of PowerPC code, developers note that Snow Leopard's applications are still currently being delivered as Universal Binaries anyway, and that removal of that extra code has a very limited impact on file size when compared to the results of compressing large XML and graphics files related to interface localization and the complete removal of any unnecessary development NIB files. Leopard users tight on disk space can safely delete all of the designable.nib files stored within their apps and use a tool such as Monolingual or Northern Softworks Leopard Cache Cleaner to remove unused foreign language files, resulting in a free weight reduction without the wait. My wireless will work for random amounts of time then suddenly start flashing on and off. For awhile it won't recognize any networks then find them. I choose my network and again it flashes on and off.
my macbook air's screen flashes when I restart it or sometimes when I am using it, and I cannot read those words because it is so fast, could it be something serious?
my Macbook (I believe a 2008 model wouldn't wake up from it's sleep like it does every time I open it (I usually set it to sleep rather than shut it down). I turned it off manually, but when I attempted reboot it does either one of two things:
a) When I simply press the power on button, the screen stays black and the sleep light fades on once, but then fades off and all mechanical sounds abruptly stop. b) When I press and hold the power button, the sleep light fades on, but then flashes about 10 times rapidly before fading in and once again abruptly turning off.
I have tried this with the charger plugged in several different outlets, not plugged into the Macbook, waiting, removing and putting back the battery. A Google search said it might have something to do with the RAM and pushing it back in, but I have no idea how to do that.
Every now and then, i get these random flash of black near the top of the screen. Its like a quick split second blink. I never had this problem in regular leopard. I'm not sure if I have a faulty GPU but I think i might too cause when I'm on battery power 9400m, the graphic performance goes down.
So I bought my MBP this past May and didn't have problems with it until now. I recently opened up my photo booth and noticed that the display flashes very quickly into different lightings/colors. It's very strange because the ceiling fan isn't on, and my MBP is sitting still. I've never seen this issue on anyone else's MBP either. I'm leaving for college very soon and don't want to leave unhappy with my MBP. If I visit the genius bar, will they give me a replacement with my one-year warranty?
So I have a MacBook circa 2007, running Lion (10.7.3). Over the past day or so it has develeoped a problem where upon opening it, the screen will come on for a moment, then go dark. Nothing will respond - it's unclear whether it's completely off or it's like the brightness is turned all the way down and I can't turn it back up. I have to force shut down with the power button, then turn it back on again. Typically once I log in nothing will load, so I have to force shutdown and start up again, at which point I'll get a dialog saying "You shut down your computer because of a problem. Would you like to reopen applications," or something to that effect. I choose no, and everything is back to normal (at least until I take a chance with closing it and opening it back up again).

MBP not booting up? I press the on button and the screen flashes for a moment and then it dies again... once I actually got it to some screen that said HD and Restore but when I clicked on HD it died immediately again...

i just got my MBA on monday and now the magsafe adaptor doesn't work anymore, it flashes green light and does not charge. Does anyone know what's wrong with it?
My Macbook Pro does not always turn on first time, it takes awhile to click on, it just clicks every time I try to turn it on, It turns on when its warm though, it also turns off when I close the lid, but the light says it is on, after leaving the lid closed for more then 5 minutes, and I open the lid it is turned off? I do not understand what is cuasing the problem?
When I go to "desktop & screen saver" in System Prefs, I have a mystery picture I cannot get rid of and it has been passed from Mac to Mac, OS to OS. It says it's on my desktop with the other pics that I see on my desktop that are actually there. I click on the picture to get its name or location and I get this ".UserImagesWelcomeSecondaryIm". So I try to find this location...nothing. I try to spotlight this exact phrase, NOTHING. This picture has gotten unbelievably annoying because I can't locate the physical file to delete it. I believe it may have been an image that was dragged off a browser onto the desktop.
I recently noticed the Apple logo is magenta at start up, when it is centered on the screen, before it turns gray and moves up the screen to make room for login details. I cannot replicate the issue on restart but only see it when it starts up first thing in the morning. It literally flashes up for just a second or two then normalizes to gray.

I have recently bought a 13" Macbook Pro and wanted to hook up an external display (an oldish acer 19"). I have a Mini Displayport to DVI adapter hooked up to a DVI -VGA adapter which leads to the display. I haven't got it to work yet. I have followed advice about closing the lid and using usb mouse and keyboard with no luck. The only thing that happens is that the screen on the laptop flashes blue for about a second after plugging in the Mini DisplayPort adapter.
How do you change the hard drive icon picture in the top right corner to look like the macbook pro computer? I've seen this on a couple people's desktops and was just wondering how you do it. Also, how do you change the folder icon to something that looks cooler.
Every few minutes my 13" MBP completely stalls, video and music pauses, can't do anything with my MBP and the mouse icon turns into that waiting icon. I don't know what it's called but it's round with colours inside it.Anyways, it stops me from what I'm doing for about 20 seconds and happens every few minutes and it's beginning to annoy me now!
I've just downloaded Safari 5.1.5 and want to create this icon on my desktop, however, I don't want it as a 'short-cut' icon but as the same icon I see on the docking station.I was previously able to do this with Safari 5.0.3.
I have a strange problem. Sometimes when i watch youtube, vimeo, yeah basicly every video on the internet my Safari flashes with white boxes. This has happened with the newest stablebuild, and has now started to show up on my Safari4 Build: 5528.16 as well. Dose anyone know about this problem?
noticed over the last few weeks that when I log into this site the page flashes quickly 3 or 4 times , then I'm logged in, it does happen on other sites too, occasionally but not all the time , running a up to dat MB 10.5.7 with all available updates. Weird thing is it doesn't happen everytime, quite sporadic , I cant seem to replicate it just curious as to what this flashing is and why it's happening.
My external display (HP w2207) seems to conflict with my MacBook Pro (15 inch Retina display, early 2013) since I upgraded MacBook OS to 10.9.4.The external display works at initial boot of Mac but does not work after OS sleeps and I attempt to awaken, and while the external display is not waking, the Retina display flashes through different screen views, which only partially reflect my normal screen, or do not reflect my normal screen at all.
there are two things that the macbook is doing to me. one is that sometimes when i move the screen up or down (the hinge is rather stiff) a white (thin) line flashes across the screen. but recently, while randomly browsing through the internet, the screen almost... i guess faded to a gray screen, but like gradually, and not like a kernel error, like the display just faded away. happened twice in a row, did a battery pull and now wont do it again.
It happened twice in a row about a week ago (and then stopped, so I figured I'd let it go), but it just happened again right now, so I'm figuring there's got to be something else going on. My only guess would be the battery... but I just had that replaced a few months ago, so it seems kind of odd to be having problems already. If it is the battery, how severe of a problem would this be? Is there something I could do to fix it, or can I just live with it until the end of the school year... or do I need to have this fixed ASAP? (And on the off chance that this is a related problem, my speakers have been making that funny crackling/static sound when I wake the computer up from sleep... I was reading some threads about that around here, but to the best of my knowledge the problem was never really resolved.)
