As a windows user, I love ccleaner. It cleans out all the privacy data from firefox, windows, ie, and more.
Is there a ccleaner for windows?
Meaning is there an app that I can run to securely delete all my history, cookies, temp files in safari, firefox, empties trash, and cleans up any mac temp directories.
I love my MacBook but it's white and looks dirty, anyone have suggestions on what to use? What not to use? Will anything over the counter mess my plastics up? where to find it

For a while my disk drive was very noisy when inserting a disk into the disk feeder. Over time, it quite reading dvd's and cd's. As much time passed, my daughter put in a dvd and now it seems to be working. possible the laser heads need to be cleaned? Can i put a "OptDisc" ( a disk used with little brushed on the back to clean the laser heads) in the feeder? I thought the Apple store had encouraged me to do this, but when I bought one, they said these disk cleaners shoudn't be used in feeders or vehicles -- they're only recommended to be used in "drop in" players where a tray opens up.

Me being the usual paranoid person I am, I'm worried that I might be doing damage to my 27" iMac that I've had for a few months after reading a thread over in the iPhone forum. In the thread for the iPhone someone was using windex to clean his iPhone and he was being warned about rubbing off some kind of coating. I use the little bottle of eyeglass cleaner that came with my eyeglasses and a microfiber clothing thinking that if it's not supposed to scratch my glasses it won't scratch the screen either. I'm gonna switch over to warm water from here on out, but did I do any damage thus far? I don't believe the iMac glass has any kind of coating but I may be mistaken.

View 1 Replies View RelatedSo with the whole Flashback/Flashfake thing I paniced (stupid on my part) ran a virus program called VirusBarrier Express and ran CCleaner (again, stupid me). Hoping I would clear off unused or harmful files I apparently in the process messed up my context menu. Items that were previously in the context menu are now gone. I did as much reading about possible fixes as I could and this is where everything stands.
Not every item in the image below was at the botton of the context menu, but iPack certainly was as well as various other menu items that have since dissapeared.
While searching the internet I came across a suggestion leading me to "library/Contextual Menu Items" and when I followed that directory for both my user and system I couldn't find a Contextual Menu Items folder. There wasn't any. I've had this "missing file/folder" problem before with preference files; just a side note.
I created the folder manually and restarted with no change at all.
Obviously I accidentally deleted something that shouldn't have been deleted. Is there any way to get back those missing items?

OK I know most reviews say the SSD is not worth the extra money.
But, when I worked on my friends SSD I must say it just feels faster in normal use. I also know this from my previous laptop where I had SSD.
So I'd like to know:

this will be my first mac - and i need some advice on applecare
my friend has kindly bought a MBA from hong kong on my behalf and i'll get it later this week (can't wait!). what i need to decide is if i should purchase some sort of 'insurance cover' for this MBA.
applecare is the obvious choice. however, �199 for the 2 additional years seem quite pricey. although i have links with my university, i believe i won't be able to get the educational price (�47) given the MBA was purchased from the HK online store.
do you think the �199 applecare will be important or are there 3rd party insurance covers out there i can consider?
I just got my macbook a few days ago. Does anyone know if there is an "end" feature or a "home" feature on macs? It's kind of annoying to not be able to just hit a button to get to the end or beginning of a line while typing. Nothing major, but it would help if I knew where it was if there is one. Also, what does the FN button do in the lower left hand corner on the keyboard?

I wanted to see if there were any alternatives to the $100 superdrive that seems pretty fragile and some people suggested this Fastmac [URL] for $110, which can ready Bluray discs.
I did a little diging on this forum and found this tread [URL], which basically says it's a Panasonic (Matshita) UJ-120 drive in an external enclosure and an IDE-to-USB bridge.
Then I went on eBay to see if they sell the UJ-120 and found this seller ([URL]) selling it for $80.
I took the plunge and bought it, and it works fine. When I plugged it in, nothing happen, but when I inserted a DVD it played it and when I inserted a blank disk, it let me burn it with itunes.
Anyway I just wanted to let everyone know that this is a great alternative for $80. I haven't tried the bluray yet, but I got what I wanted.
Are there any other alternatives to the MCE optibays?

I'd discuss this with those of you looking at a Sony Z series, Sony F series, etc when looking at MacBook Pro alternatives since it looks like Apple will never release a computer with a new processor again. I grew tired of the wait, and purchased a Sony F series, you have probably seen (and have been annoyed by) my comments about the experience. It's been great, that quadcore i7 blows through my daily paces of photoshop, programming projects, games, etc. The battery life isn't so bad either, easily besting my PowerBook G4 (I had a MacBook, that.. was much better though).Build quality seemed good. Initially. It is more physically solid than say, a MacBook. However, this is only superficial.

I have a slow loading brand new dvd burner that I took out of a dell studio xps 16" that is the same exact size as the super drive in the macbook pro unibody 15" (both sata)....Is it possible for me to use this drive since my macbook pro 15 is not letting me load cds or dvds but it does go in...let me know before I do this myself and damage the whole thing!
View 1 Replies View RelatedI came from the MS Windows PC. I love everything about the Macbook Air and the Apple OS; however, I get used to the Delete, End, and Home buttons. Is there a way on the Apple keyboard that I can simulate these functions? With these buttons, I can easily move to the end or start of a sentence for word process editing. I can delete from the right side of the sentence instead of using the arrow on the Apple keyboard to move it to the right and then use the Delete (which is really a Backspace key) to delete the word.

I just installed a 160gb Gen2 Intel in my 15" macbook pro, and its flooring me with its speed. Amazing upgrade. All editors, designers, etc... should do this upgrade.
Optibay Alternative ----
Now I want to put another SSD in there for Raid0 or just the stock 500gb for now.. for storage.. but the cost of the Optibay is pretty high. I saw a link to an alternative, called USCaddy or something, I forgot. Can someone link that one in, and comment if its ok?

View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter discovering that the Tweetie app I use turns on the discrete GPU, I've been looking at alternatives to maximize battery life. A lot of twitter clients use Adobe Air, which also seems to get a bad rep, but is that because it drains battery life too, or because it's just buggy otherwise? So far I've been using twhirl without any obvious issues, and I'm testing out the battery usage with that running. I have to admit, I didn't notice any significant battery drain when Tweetie was running, so maybe I'm just overreacting here. If I remember right I got a little over 6 hours, and installed Tweetie about two hours after I turned my MacBook on then. I'd actually prefer twhirl since I use that on the desktop and I'm just used to it, but not if Adobe Air is going to cause problems on my shiny new MacBook.
