Apr 25, 2012
is it possible anyone has any recommendations for an alternate to the OWC On the Go Pro? The story is that i have one of these backing up my mac pro on my desk and i would very much like to replace the one that i store off site with a new one. i'm thinking of gettings something similar but i would like to think about using a slightly different product in the event of some odd manufacturing error. basically i love the OWC but I am thinking of getting a slightly different item.this is for an off site backup for both my mac pro and my mac book pro.
Info:
Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 10.6.8 with 64 bit Win7 in Parallel

I have tried using SMC fan control in the past but the minimum fan speed was 1000rpm which i found too high when i didnt need the extra cooling (noisy too).
Is there an alternative to SMC fan control so i can increase the speed when needed then reduce them to the original speeds during idle?

I'm planning on purchasing a new hard drive soon to replace my current MacBook Pro 15" HD. For Mac, I'll be restoring my HD configuration through Time Machine.
I don't really want to reinstall Windows and reinstall all the apps and games on it and do not have a Windows-based imaging program that I could use.
I've heard of an app called WinClone that acts like CCC or SuperDuper and can image and restore the installation for you. However, the development of WinClone has apparently stopped and according to some posts in the MacUpdate link, it is incompatible with Snow Leopard/other users are experiencing problems while using WinClone.
What should I do?

I've got a DVD that I've been trying to rip to a movie file for the last three days, and have so far been unsuccessful. (and before anyone asks, it's a non-copyrighted DVD that our company has the rights to) What's happening is it gets 99.5% done ripping, then it just kind of sits there for a while, then the program closes. I end up with a movie on my desktop that isn't playable. I've tried on two different computers, ripping to two different formats (MP4 and H-264). I've tried ripping it directly from the DVD, and also ripping the DVD to the hard drive first and then creating the file from that. It does this every time, and I think it's just HandBrake being flaky. The DVD itself plays fine. Anyone suggest an alternative way for me to do this?

As a windows user, I love ccleaner. It cleans out all the privacy data from firefox, windows, ie, and more.
Is there a ccleaner for windows?
Meaning is there an app that I can run to securely delete all my history, cookies, temp files in safari, firefox, empties trash, and cleans up any mac temp directories.

OK I know most reviews say the SSD is not worth the extra money.
But, when I worked on my friends SSD I must say it just feels faster in normal use. I also know this from my previous laptop where I had SSD.
So I'd like to know:
are there SSD's out there that we can buy and install ourselves?
Which ones and how much do they cost?
I believe it needs to be 1,8 inch with Ziff connection... right?

Is there a program like Shazam that I can use on OS X? I really don't want to go through parts of my library using Shazam on my iPhone if there is something I can run natively right from my Mac itself.

ways to use osx and its applications, besides keyboard and mouse.
I know about speech recognition. Recently I found about opera browser gesture-based internet surfing.
Maybe there are other programs that use isight in order to take commands from our face expressions. Of course, from hardware side, there is also trackball, tablet surfaces etc

I'm looking for a repeater of sorts, similar to the Airport express, but just not as expensive.
The issue is that my macbook drops out randomly, sometimes it just goes through phases where it drops the connection about 20 times in 30 minutes.
The issue is that the modem-router cannot be moved as its phone line based, so I think my last option is a repeater. The Express seemed ideal as its a small, simple unit that can be plugged straight into the socket, which would be perfect for where I wish to place it - is there a cheaper alternative?

I'm looking to replace my parent's cable subscription with a mac mini, the Apple TV seems too outdated and restricted. I plan to couple it with OTA broadcasts, but what else can I do? I see things like Boxee and Plex, what are these and how can I best use them? Are there any better software to use? I planned on using Hulu, getting some massive storage and putting seasond and seasons of shows on there. Note, I don't really need HD content as much, they just don't care. I know I can buy off of itunes, but is there a way to get the news? Like a program that will take a RSS feed of CNN or something? Basically I want Hulu to have news. Can all of this tie into front row? What hardware addons can I purchase? like a tuner or somehting. I'll probably get a used Mac Mini to try it out on first.

Something that will let me very quickly view any type of file.

I heard a rumor that there would be an alternative to Parallels for running Windows OS on a Mac. I like how Parallels runs at the same time but it does run slow on my Mac and makes all other programs slow down, too.
Anyone know anything about new software that is comparable?

I've done a few (well a lot) of DVDs now with iDVD using avi files on my hard disk with a view to either giving as presents or watching with the family on TV.
We do not want to hover around my laptop to watch a movie In about 90% of these iDVD created DVDs I get an error message from iDVD that there was a problem during encoding and if we try to watch them throgh the TV/DVD player then the film just stops about 75% of the way through.

Does anyone know of a reasonable alternative to AdBlock for Safari? I would like an unobtrusive ad-blocking extension that is equally effective. I understand that it will not be officially supported, but that's fine so long as it doesn't compromise performance/security. AdBlock uses way too much memory and it cripples Safari, causing it to hang/crash repeatedly. You can find the bug report here: [URL]

this will be my first mac - and i need some advice on applecare
my friend has kindly bought a MBA from hong kong on my behalf and i'll get it later this week (can't wait!). what i need to decide is if i should purchase some sort of 'insurance cover' for this MBA.
applecare is the obvious choice. however, 199 for the 2 additional years seem quite pricey. although i have links with my university, i believe i won't be able to get the educational price (47) given the MBA was purchased from the HK online store.
do you think the 199 applecare will be important or are there 3rd party insurance covers out there i can consider?

I am looking for an alternative to iPhoto for viewing and organizing photos. I need something that allows for tags like iPhoto does and preferably something with a full-screen mode for editing.
My main problem with iPhoto is that it gets bogged down when you have imported thousands of photos. And I hate having to import photos on external drives before I can view them.
I've seen a lot of recommendations for Picasa, but I can't use that 'cause I'm on a PPC.

I just got my macbook a few days ago. Does anyone know if there is an "end" feature or a "home" feature on macs? It's kind of annoying to not be able to just hit a button to get to the end or beginning of a line while typing. Nothing major, but it would help if I knew where it was if there is one. Also, what does the FN button do in the lower left hand corner on the keyboard?
