View 1 RepliesMe being the usual paranoid person I am, I'm worried that I might be doing damage to my 27" iMac that I've had for a few months after reading a thread over in the iPhone forum. In the thread for the iPhone someone was using windex to clean his iPhone and he was being warned about rubbing off some kind of coating. I use the little bottle of eyeglass cleaner that came with my eyeglasses and a microfiber clothing thinking that if it's not supposed to scratch my glasses it won't scratch the screen either. I'm gonna switch over to warm water from here on out, but did I do any damage thus far? I don't believe the iMac glass has any kind of coating but I may be mistaken.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a question (whoa). I have an iMac Dual Core, bought in mid-2007 (it's the White Plastic version, not the newer Aluminium with the glass-display).
For some time now I had some dark spots, kind of shadow like in the bottom left corner. I wasn't bothered too much by them, but they got bigger, and now I have these in all of the corners except the bottom right one.
Anyone got any ideas how to get rid of them? (no, no three-year guarantee plan ... stupid me), or if not if it'd mean to replace the whole display or if it's just some cleaning (I talk money-wise here ...)
I attach two not-so-good pictures (the background is plain-white and the image is a bit enhanced ...) so you guys can see what I mean.
Can someone recommend a screen cleaner that I can buy? The one I am currently using leaves marks from the microfiber/lint free towel I use once the solution dries.

View 10 Replies View RelatedThere was some application that I used a while ago when "activity monitor" mysteriously disappeared from my system that let me reinstall it from the OS X install disc without having to do a complete reinstall of the OS. Does anyone know what i am talking about, I cannot remember what it is called. It is a third party utility.
View 2 Replies View RelatedDoes anyone know if these parts can be switched out? I know the battery and dc in board cannot be (I don't think) but can the logic board, memory, hard drive, etc be switched? I can't get power in my powerbook and would like to test it with the logic board from my macbook pro.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an aluminium iMac, 2.4GHz Intel C2D, 2GB RAM, running Leopard. On one account, it runs slowly, with a noticeable delay in doing anything, even menus take a second do to anything once they've been clicked. It has all the updates installed and I've tried repairing the permissions and rebooting already.
Since I've only noticed it on one account, I'm inclined to think it's a corrupted user file or something.
i'm looking into fixing up my white plastic macbook 13.3" and i was wondering if anyone knows if its possible to put the nicer screen from the aluminium macbook into my plastic one??
View 3 Replies View Relatedi have been putting this off as i got told apple will most likely not fix it but do you think they will ill have to go to an authorized service provider as there is not apple store here.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TA1ihGuGrTsand that sound is not made by it been on that stand as it does it while on the table i only used to stand to life it up for the camera.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have had this macbook pro now for about 3-4 months and last week it started showing weird yellow/white stripes on places where it should be completely white. It comes and goes from time to time and it seems to be effected by the hardware itself, since when I move my screen it comes and goes. But when I make a screenshot of an opened window, like iCal, with lots of white space, it does not show the yellow-like stripes. I tried adjusting the contrast at universal access but it didn't work.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to find a desk lamp for the 24" iMac. My Dad uses one for work and his eyesight isn't what it used to be, so I'm looking for something that will sit on top of the iMac and give light to the whole desk.
Unfortunately, a Google search finds only the old classic G4 'desk lamp' iMac, but I'm actually after an iMac desk lamp, if that makes sense.
Function over aesthetics, but preferably nothing too hideous that detracts from the natural beauty of the Mac. Any suggestions would be great
I've got a 2007 Macbook Pro. It's on its second graphics card (8600M GT), the first one failed on me a year ago. OS X 10.5.7, all firmware updates installed.
I think I have a new graphics card issue, but I can't prove it. In Front Row, after 10-20 minutes, often parts of the screen will start going black. Then it freezes. Sound works fine. It doesn't look like the same kind of wild distortion that I got when my GPU failed the first time, though, it just looks like things have been rendered incorrectly.
When Front Row finally quits, I've had black and white bars across my menu bar a couple of times. Once the computer then totally locked up and I had to reboot.
In Windows XP in boot camp, things are worse. I only use boot camp for games, since they use a lot of graphical power, it made sense that the problems happen there more often. After 15-20 minutes, the screen will start stuttering, then the keyboard/mouse will stop responding. The sound will hiccup a few times too. That lasts about 10 seconds, then everything returns to normal for a while (as little as 10 seconds, or as long as 5 minutes.)
The Apple Hardware Test (short and extended) shows no trouble. Techtool Pro shows no trouble. I ran the very thorough memtest86+, and it showed no memory trouble.
Can anybody give me any tips on definitively diagnosing this problem? Is there any kind of really intensive hardware test I can get (a live CD maybe)?
Second question, has anybody heard of Apple replacing a laptop that has had many faults with a brand new unit?
As a windows user, I love ccleaner. It cleans out all the privacy data from firefox, windows, ie, and more.
Is there a ccleaner for windows?
Meaning is there an app that I can run to securely delete all my history, cookies, temp files in safari, firefox, empties trash, and cleans up any mac temp directories.
I have an early 2008 Imac with an Nividia 8800 GS graphics card. It apparently failed two weeks ago, and I just got the machine back after the Apple Store replacing the card. The only graphical glitches I had on the Imac, was the faint line that would run across the screen that you could see on a white background if I left a program's window opened to long; and when using Safari, while encoding a dvd, trying to open up a new tab I would get images of whatever I was encoding in the new safari tab for half a second. Then it would correct itself and bring a blank safari page.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've searched online and in threads here on the "can I use an iMac as a monitor" question, and found mostly negative answers. One exception seems to be the 27" model connected via mini-Display Port. However, I'd been hoping to connect an older (G4/DVI) Mini to a new (21.5") iMac, to use the iMac as a monitor. The only semi-hack solution I've seen is to use Screen Recycler or similar software. I have two questions, though:-Can Screen Recycler be used to mirror a desktop, not just extend it? (all info I've seen talks only about extending/2nd monitor, not mirroring).

For a while my disk drive was very noisy when inserting a disk into the disk feeder. Over time, it quite reading dvd's and cd's. As much time passed, my daughter put in a dvd and now it seems to be working. possible the laser heads need to be cleaned? Can i put a "OptDisc" ( a disk used with little brushed on the back to clean the laser heads) in the feeder? I thought the Apple store had encouraged me to do this, but when I bought one, they said these disk cleaners shoudn't be used in feeders or vehicles -- they're only recommended to be used in "drop in" players where a tray opens up.

My parents recently bought an iMac. Yesterday my mom was playing a game when the computer froze. Neither force quit or holding the power button was doing anything so in her frustration she unplugged the system. Today, after plugging in the system again, it won't turn on.
I press the power button on the side of the wireless keyboard and the green light on the keyboard turns on for about 3 sec and then starts flashing. No fans start up and the screen does nothing.

In my User & Groups, it shows that a System Administrator with standard access is the current user for my iMac.A "System Administrator" is using an iCloud password to log in and unlock the screen. I cannot delete the user, nor change their password.I am running OS X Yosemite 10.10.1I purchased the iMac from a school closing auction.I know little of apple computers - be gentle.
I want to remove the "System Administrator" who recently appeared (within the last few days). How do I make my computer more secure? (I changed my iTunes password already.)

View 5 Replies View RelatedVery occasionally the screen on my iMac (early 08 24") goes blank and it makes an incredibly loud static sound that's independent of the volume control setting. The power then needs disconnecting to restart the machine. Haven't been able to tie it to any specific program. Apple Care asked I leave it on logged in on a new user account (at the time I originally thought it only happened in sleep mode, but have since discovered this is not the case).
It's happened maybe 3 or 4 times in the same number of months. I've only found one similar case on the net, with someone suggesting it was Safari 4 beta, which I've found not to be the case with mine. It's on extended warranty. I think there's something seriously wrong with it (it's already had the hard drive and power supply replaced).
So with the whole Flashback/Flashfake thing I paniced (stupid on my part) ran a virus program called VirusBarrier Express and ran CCleaner (again, stupid me). Hoping I would clear off unused or harmful files I apparently in the process messed up my context menu. Items that were previously in the context menu are now gone. I did as much reading about possible fixes as I could and this is where everything stands.
Not every item in the image below was at the botton of the context menu, but iPack certainly was as well as various other menu items that have since dissapeared.
While searching the internet I came across a suggestion leading me to "library/Contextual Menu Items" and when I followed that directory for both my user and system I couldn't find a Contextual Menu Items folder. There wasn't any. I've had this "missing file/folder" problem before with preference files; just a side note.
I created the folder manually and restarted with no change at all.
Obviously I accidentally deleted something that shouldn't have been deleted. Is there any way to get back those missing items?

How would I use the SCSI PCI card from my older Powermac G3 Server in my Powermac G4? System profiler says that it is connected, but no drivers are installed for it. Also, it doens't appear in the "Parallel SCSI" menu.

I have a dual 2.5ghz PM G5 that works fine except that the heat exchanger leaked. Everything else is fine. My question is, I found someone on CL who was selling a quad G5 system for $375 because of a damaged mainboard. Could I take the Mobo from the dual G5 and put it in the case for the quad? The processor sockets are same but I'm unsure as to mounting issues.

I remember a lot of complaints about the old MBPs having problems with the aluminum denting and I was wondering if people are having the same problems with the new aluminum MBs. How are they holding up overall? Are people mostly happy with them, particularly compared to the previous models?

View 4 Replies View RelatedIn the last month I decided that I wanted more portability for my laptop so I decided to get a new one.At first I was going to get an alum macbook but I was scared off by all the critcism of the screen quality. Then I was going to get a Rev B Air but I was tempted by the refurb A prices so I bought a 1.8/SSD rev A. Nice machine but I was not happy with the performance or the compromises (Hulu video stutter, Eyetv download of old camcorder movies stutter, ichat video stutter, lots of beach balls as I was scrolling in Safari, fans blaring at 6500 rpms with RSS screensaver, etc). I was depressed as I did not want to spend the big bucks for a MBA rev B, so I decided to look at the Alum macbook again. I read a thousand posts here and headed off to the Apple store with my thumb drive filled with all kinds of pictures in hand. After viewing many pictures at all kinds of angles, comparing with the Air, I decided the screen wasn't near as bad as the hype. So off to ebay to find a deal. It took 1.5 hours to do a 15GB time machine migration over wifi. Here is my review.
