I'm looking at a MBP on CL and the seller has swapped out the HD and put in this WD Scorpio 320gb 7200 rpm HD. I'm wondering if any of you have this hard drive and can confirm it's quality or claim that it is of poor quality?
View 3 RepliesI installed the hard drive with no problem and have experienced greater performance, no clicking nor vibration, and no freezeup or rainbow wheel. I also did a clean install of Snow Leopard. I did a PRAM reset at the beginning and calibrated my battery. However, now I noticed my battery is draining FAST, only lasting 2 hours. I looked a little online and discovered I may still need to reset the SMC (shift-control-option + power key), which I will do shortly. The battery lasted 6-7 hours before with my old hdd and is at 96% capacity.

Vibration /noise issues on the scorpio black 7200rpm sway me towards the scorpio blue 500gb as well.

I have about 200 gigs of data, split between a pair of Seagate Baracuda 7200rpm drives I bought 3 years ago.
I am thinking on going with a single 500 gig drive for my data, and I can't decide between a Caviar Black, or a Baracuda 7200.12.
I have read that the Caviar Black have incredible performance, , but only for the 1TB since it has 3 platters.
How do the 500gig models compare between WD and Seagate? I just don't have the need for more. My OS and Apps are on the SSD at 23 gigs, and all the rest of my work/personal files take up about 200 gigs.
Which is going to be better, the Black, or the Baracuda? 500 gig models only.
Because of the re-introduction of the matte displays, I'm thinking about purchasing a 2.8ghz Macbook Pro. To make up for the 50$ of non-conformist-punishment-tax for the matte option I'd like to downgrade to the 320gb 7200 RPM drive. I've read about the issues with the 500gb drives - does the 320gb version also have the chirp / beep issue?

I don't really see myself needing 500Gb, but I have read that a higher density drive outperforms a lower density drive. Newegg currently has the 500 WD Scorpio Blue drive listed for $30 over the 320Gb edition. Will I see significant performance increase by going with the 500Gb model instead of the 320Gb one?
What about power consumption? Is one better than the other?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a White MacBook version 3,1 made in 2008 w/ the intel ICH8-M AHCI SATA controller. Unfortunately this controller is only 1.5gb/sec. I picked up a WD7500BPVT, WD Scorpio Blue 750gb, with a spec of 3gb/sec. Western Digital tech support assured me it would step down to 1.5gb/sec, no jumpers needed (as it isn't configurable by a hardware jumper). So I install it in my MacBook, boot up from the Snow Leopard install disc but it doesn't see my fancy, schmancy 750gb drive. Is the drive not seen because of a compatibility issue w/ the SATA controller? If so, what is the largest capacity 9.5mm drive someone has installed in a MacBook w/ the intel ICH8-M AHCI SATA controller?

View 15 Replies View RelatedMy external WD 320GB hard drive wont show up on Finder when I connect it up. Ive been having this problem ever since I pulled it out without ejecting it - I know thats bad but my macbook froze and I had no choice.
Now my external hard drive wont show up on Finder, I even tried disk utility and I was able to verify the disk & then repair it, but its like I cant use the hard drive anymore. Every time I try to add files to it or remove files my laptop freezes and I cant do anything.
Its got to the point where all I want to do now is get all my files off this external hard drive somewhow, Is there a way to get my files off this hard drive before its too late if isnt already so.

I'm purchasing the base model Mini and will be upgrading to a 7200 320 gb hardrive. I can purchase the 7200 Hitachi Travelstar today only for$69.00 Canadian. Since this is a one time thing, is this drive good enough or should I spend $30.00 to $50,00 more on a Seagate or WD. I've done a fair amount of research and read reviews but I would love to have some feedback from experienced Mini users.

I checked the ram and it was all legit, checked the hd capacity and it was all correct as well. So I made a new login for myself and deleted the previous owner's. Now my hard drive shows up as 320gb. Even in disk utility and terminal.

Three days ago a noisy fan brought me to the Genius Bar at my Apple store and when i got there the boot screen stayed gray and had a folder with a question mark in it. I have a late 2006 15" MPB running Snow Leopard 10.6.6. The guy told me i need a new hard drive so i went out and bought a Western Digital Scorpio Black 320g 7200 rpm SATA drive with a 16 mb cache. I replaced the old one with it, formated and installed OSX 10.6. I then used my time capsule to recover my last back up. I completely restored it. TWO DAYS OF PERFECT USE Now, i have the annoying fan noise again and my console is telling me that my HDD is having disk0-02 i/o errors. A LOT OF THEM. I've had at least 30 before noon today. Currently i am writing zeros to my drive and going to reinstall 10.6 WITHOUT using my time capsule restore (incase that has bad blocks written to it) Has any one heard of issues like this before with the particular HDD i bought? Two HDD failures two days apart seems fishy to me, what other issues should I be looking at? Is it possible i'm getting the i/o errors from a bad HDD ribbon cable to the logic board?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI picked up an ibook g4 14", and everything was working fine. Today, the hard drive failed, so I picked up a 320gb western digital PATA hard drive and installed it. Disk utility recognizes it, but when I go to install panther (the original restore disk), it says it can't install on that volume... no matter what size the partition is. I also have a tiger (legit), but only have access to a copy of it. I can't seem to get the ibook to boot from the tiger disk, it just goes into open firmware. I only have access to the ibook as far as macs go, but i have two pc's... any ideas? I'm trying to get this going for my daughter tomorrow morning.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was trying to upgrade my hard drive on my 2009 15" MBP 2.53GHz to a 7200RPM WD Scorpio Black 320GB BEKT I had. The WD HD had Leopard on it, but when I swap the HD into the machine and boot it up, the machine just hangs and the Apple sign won't even show up. Then I plug in the original HD to the machine as a external device, and boot up the machine with OPTION key to select OS. It properly show up the partition I had in the WD HD and the external HD. When I click boot from the WD HD, it hangs again. I then switch back the HD and use my original HD to reformat the OS partition I had in the WD HD, then swap the drive back again. I boot it up and enters the Snow Leopard installation disk and begin installation process. It took forever to finish the installation. On my original HD, it only took 21 min. to do a clean install. Now with the WD HD, it took 33 min. to get 10% of the installation process done. I then took out the WD HD and did a surface scan on it, but no bad sectors were found.

I am torn between the Momentus XT 500GB version, which is on sale at newegg right now for like 69, or going with the Scorpio Black. The differences that have me stuck is the 32 vs 16 cache, as well has the added speed of the seagate compared to the laundry list of problems people have reported with the XT. This will be my first HDD upgrade, and was looking for a little direction.

I just upgraded my friends Macbook Core 2 Duo to a 500GB Scorpio Black 7200 RPM. I used both XBench and AJA System Test to test hard drive performance and the Scorpio Black is definitely a faster drive. Using AJA system test, my Apple upgrade 7.2k Seagate drive is about 90 MB/s, while the Scorpio Black is around 105 MB/s Do these numbers justify an upgrade on my machine?

I sold the MBP and got a white nvidia MB, but I kept the 7200 RPM drive and used it in the white MB (I did not reinstall the OS). Everything works fine, but I've noticed that it takes a very long time to boot. From the time I turn the MB on, to the time the spinning disk appears, it takes approx. 60 seconds. Other than that, the MB works fine. Should I do a clean install of Leopard. Would this help the slow boot time?

been looking for a hard drive to store my photos and work from University, the things I never want to lose basically, so don't want to buy the wrong product and don't know good brands when it comes to Macs. Does thunderbolt make a huge difference also?

I just installed the 4G Ram easily but my next step is to install a bigger hard drive. I have the 120GB one. My question is when I install the new hard drive, do i start up the mac mini and load up the OSX restore disc that came in the box with the mini? I also installed iWork09, will I be able to install iWork09 in the new hard drive (i know the iWork09 only comes with 1 license key).
View 4 Replies View RelatedThis is in regards to the 2010 mini. I have been reading up on SSD, Hybrids and FW800 with a 7200. What is the easiest AND most effective/cost effective solution? If I went he FW800 route, can I use the same drive as my data storage drive? Will there be enough headroom to run the OS over FW and use the drive to stream movies playing in another room on Apple TV2 simultaneously? Will this give me a performance increase over the internal 5400 if I use the external 7200 for everything over FW800?
That is where my thoughts about the hybrid come into play. I know I can stream the iTunes content over USB2, which I have at the moment for the big drive. I would need to go buy an enclosure with FW800 to run it as a boot drive. I could use that same money and go get a 500GB Hybrid drive and install myself and leave the USB2 as data only. If the install is painless but tedious, I might just do that. If the FW800 route would be robust enough to run the OS and stream data to other devices simultaneously (ie use it as I would the regular internal drive), I might just do that and wait for SSD prices to come tumbling down and do a bigger internal SSD in the future.
