MacBook Pro :: WD Scorpio Black Really Slow - Broken?

Sep 5, 2009

I was trying to upgrade my hard drive on my 2009 15" MBP 2.53GHz to a 7200RPM WD Scorpio Black 320GB BEKT I had. The WD HD had Leopard on it, but when I swap the HD into the machine and boot it up, the machine just hangs and the Apple sign won't even show up. Then I plug in the original HD to the machine as a external device, and boot up the machine with OPTION key to select OS. It properly show up the partition I had in the WD HD and the external HD. When I click boot from the WD HD, it hangs again. I then switch back the HD and use my original HD to reformat the OS partition I had in the WD HD, then swap the drive back again. I boot it up and enters the Snow Leopard installation disk and begin installation process. It took forever to finish the installation. On my original HD, it only took 21 min. to do a clean install. Now with the WD HD, it took 33 min. to get 10% of the installation process done. I then took out the WD HD and did a surface scan on it, but no bad sectors were found.

MacBook Pro :: 500gb 5400rpm Scorpio Blue Or 7200rpm 320gb Scorpio Black?

Jun 18, 2009

The thing is I dont really need 500gb of space. But from reviews Ive read that the 500gb is faster in some cases because of its higher platter density.
Vibration /noise issues on the scorpio black 7200rpm sway me towards the scorpio blue 500gb as well.

Anyone had experience of either hard drive or both? (this will be for a 2.2Ghz MBP)

MacBook Pro :: I / O Errors On WD Scorpio Black

Jan 8, 2011

Three days ago a noisy fan brought me to the Genius Bar at my Apple store and when i got there the boot screen stayed gray and had a folder with a question mark in it. I have a late 2006 15" MPB running Snow Leopard 10.6.6. The guy told me i need a new hard drive so i went out and bought a Western Digital Scorpio Black 320g 7200 rpm SATA drive with a 16 mb cache. I replaced the old one with it, formated and installed OSX 10.6. I then used my time capsule to recover my last back up. I completely restored it. TWO DAYS OF PERFECT USE Now, i have the annoying fan noise again and my console is telling me that my HDD is having disk0-02 i/o errors. A LOT OF THEM. I've had at least 30 before noon today. Currently i am writing zeros to my drive and going to reinstall 10.6 WITHOUT using my time capsule restore (incase that has bad blocks written to it) Has any one heard of issues like this before with the particular HDD i bought? Two HDD failures two days apart seems fishy to me, what other issues should I be looking at? Is it possible i'm getting the i/o errors from a bad HDD ribbon cable to the logic board?

MacBook Pro :: Seagate Momentus XT Vs WD Scorpio Black?

Jun 14, 2012

I want to upgrade the HDD in my Macbook Pro 2010 that currently has the stock 5400 250Gb drive in it. I am torn between the Momentus XT 500GB version, which is on sale at newegg right now for like 69, or going with the Scorpio Black. The differences that have me stuck is the 32 vs 16 cache, as well has the added speed of the seagate compared to the laundry list of problems people have reported with the XT. This will be my first HDD upgrade, and was looking for a little direction.

MacBook Pro :: Scorpio Black 7.2k Faster Than Apple Seagate?

Dec 27, 2010

I just upgraded my friends Macbook Core 2 Duo to a 500GB Scorpio Black 7200 RPM. I used both XBench and AJA System Test to test hard drive performance and the Scorpio Black is definitely a faster drive. Using AJA system test, my Apple upgrade 7.2k Seagate drive is about 90 MB/s, while the Scorpio Black is around 105 MB/s Do these numbers justify an upgrade on my machine?

MacBook Pro :: Draining Battery Due To WD5000BEKT 500GB Scorpio Black 7200 RPM Hard Drive?

Nov 26, 2010

I installed the hard drive with no problem and have experienced greater performance, no clicking nor vibration, and no freezeup or rainbow wheel. I also did a clean install of Snow Leopard. I did a PRAM reset at the beginning and calibrated my battery. However, now I noticed my battery is draining FAST, only lasting 2 hours. I looked a little online and discovered I may still need to reset the SMC (shift-control-option + power key), which I will do shortly. The battery lasted 6-7 hours before with my old hdd and is at 96% capacity.

MacBook Pro :: Black Line Under Screen - Broken Pixel?

Jun 17, 2010

I have had my MacBook Pro since November so it's still new. I take great care of it. This morning, I opened it up and noticed a small black line present under the screen. It has not been dropped, moved, beaten up, etc. It doesn't look like a broken pixel and all of the dead pixel fixers I have tried have not worked. Not sure what to do now. I live two hours away from the closest apple store and I cannot afford to send it out for fixing because I am an online student and need the computer daily.

MacBook :: Black MacBook Slow After StartUp Disk Got Full

Dec 26, 2010

I'm writing this thread on my dad's netbook bc my MacBook is so slow it took about 3 minutes opening Chrome, 2 minutes to get to MacRumors, forgot my password had to open Word, which I gave up on opening after about 5 minutes of spinning beach ball.

Booting takes about 10 minutes. Finder takes forever. Even moving the mouse over the dock to bring it up makes the computer freeze for at least 30 seconds, if not indefinitely.

The problem started two days ago. I was installing a new Windows XP program via Parallels, and somehow ran out of Startup Disk space. (I've been ripping my DVDs onto an external HD and sometimes I have up to 50+ gb before I get around to transferring to the external.)

When the "Startup Disk Almost Full" warning came up, I immediately erased 20 gb of space and emptied the trash. But everything was still stuck. So I closed out Parallels, rebooted (had to do a hard reboot), waited for the fifteen minute startup, and everything's been painfully slow since.

Activity Monitor says I'm using 1.82 gb RAM of a total 3.0, CPU is 79% idle, when I open Chrome, or anything really, I get the "Not Responding" beach ball, but no % of CPU working on the task, no increase in RAM, nada.

I have the black macbook, 2.16 GHz, 3 GB RAM, latest version of OSX

MacBook Pro :: WD Scorpio Blue Or Seagate Momentus?

Jan 16, 2009

I'm aware that there are probably a dozen of these threads around in the forums, but if you have the time to tell me to search it up, then you have the time to answer my question. I am fully aware that this may void my MBP's warranty. I've decided to go with either the 500gb 5400rpm WD or Seagate. I'm just wondering which drive is more reliable and faster. Also, when installing the hard drive, is it ok to use a magnetic screw driver. Someone told me that there's an application called Superduper. It clones the original hard drive to make the upgrade easier. Is this a good application, or are there better options?

MacBook Pro :: Scorpio Blue 320Gb Or 500Gb Upgrade

Jul 2, 2009

I am planning to purchase a 13" Macbook Pro base model (first Mac by the way), and I want to upgrade from the stock 160Gb HDD.

I don't really see myself needing 500Gb, but I have read that a higher density drive outperforms a lower density drive. Newegg currently has the 500 WD Scorpio Blue drive listed for $30 over the 320Gb edition. Will I see significant performance increase by going with the 500Gb model instead of the 320Gb one?

What about power consumption? Is one better than the other?

MacBook :: WD Scorpio Blue 750gb Hard Drive

Jul 19, 2010

I have a White MacBook version 3,1 made in 2008 w/ the intel ICH8-M AHCI SATA controller. Unfortunately this controller is only 1.5gb/sec. I picked up a WD7500BPVT, WD Scorpio Blue 750gb, with a spec of 3gb/sec. Western Digital tech support assured me it would step down to 1.5gb/sec, no jumpers needed (as it isn't configurable by a hardware jumper). So I install it in my MacBook, boot up from the Snow Leopard install disc but it doesn't see my fancy, schmancy 750gb drive. Is the drive not seen because of a compatibility issue w/ the SATA controller? If so, what is the largest capacity 9.5mm drive someone has installed in a MacBook w/ the intel ICH8-M AHCI SATA controller?

MacBook Pro :: WD Scorpio Blue WD5000BEVT 500GB 2.5" Internal SATA HD Spindown?

Mar 22, 2010

I've recently bought a WD Scorpio Blue WD5000BEVT 500GB 2.5" SATA hard drive to put in my PS3. I decided instead to put this in my MacBook Pro and put the 320GB drive from my MBP in the PS3 - which I have done and works perfectly.

Now the problem is the WD HDD in the MBP. I can physically hear the HDD spin down and then almost immediately spin up again. Whilst in this state of "spin down" OSX is a little unresponsive. Does anyone know how to stop the drive from shutting down so often. It literally happens every few seconds. I haven't noticed the problem when booted in Windows 7 though I could be wrong.

MacBook Pro :: Slow Startup / Extra Slow To Load Dock / Interface

Mar 28, 2012

I have a Macbook Pro core 2 duo era 2007, OS 10.6.8, with an interesting problem I've not encountered in reading other issues. Here's the system profile, to get that out of the way: [code] Enabled Other than the faulty video card that seems standard for this run of the Pro, I have never had an issue. I have just replaced the battery from the original battery that came with the computer. It was useless to the extent of the word, but my budget did not allow me to purchase a new battery until recently. The battery info only stated "Replace Now" and the LED meter no longer functioned. The battery held no charge, and the computer only ran off of wall power. Up until a few days before I replaced the battery, this provided no trouble. However, it began one day to startup extremely slowly (5 minutes or more on the Apple logo startup screen, and then more time to load dock/top screen toolbar/etc. It also failed to recognize the external HD I frequently use with this computer. My theory was that it was simply underpowered on account of the failed battery, and the internal HD or the CPU was just not able to run properly. I finally put a new battery in hoping that it would fix the issue, but no avail. My startup time seems slightly less, but it seems as if the computer has not loaded interface protocols, as the computer is unresponsive to attempts to open the dock or a finder window, or even hover over battery or volume icons. After 5-10 minutes it finally kicks in and I can use my computer without problem, with the exception of the external HD, which will still not load.I have run disk utility, verified my HD, no errors reported. I have the activity monitor up which shows a pretty minimal load on the CPU and disk usage. Nothing I can think of would explain the problem my computer has suddenly adopted.

MBP then now it running so slow on start-up and apps are very slow to open like around 5 minutes. Every action that I try to do like clicking on the apple in the upper left it freezes showing a spinning wheel and it will take time to show the drop down options. I checked disk utility and it said that HD is ok, done verify/permission verify and repair.

I checked the activity monitor noting the ram/CPU usage and its normal it even tells that 2GB of ram is not use.It shows not responding in the activity monitor if you open an app for around 5mins then it opens or it will crash.I already done the 2 kinds of reset and did not work.BUT it opens normally in Safe mode.

MacBook Air :: Slow Opening Apps - Slow Read Speed?

Apr 17, 2009

I'm finding my MBA rev b to be quite slow opening apps, I bought the 1.6 ghz 120gb model.

It seems like everything's rather slow to open. I have 30gb free on the hard drive, iTunes, Safari (5 tabs) TextWrangler and mail open all day.

If I ever need to go into Firefox it takes a fair while to get up and running. I ran some xbench scores and it seems very slow on the random reads, oddly it was much quicker writing to the disk than reading.

Is their anyone in the know who can confirm that this is normal? Or if not, is there anything I can do to give it a boost?
