MacBook Pro :: Upgrading / Allocating Different Amount Of RAM To Win7

Mar 3, 2010

I have a 13" MacBook Pro Unibody with 2gb of ram in it. I am waiting on my 4gb to come in the mail and I am going to replace it tomorrow. Currently I am dual booting into Windows 7 with VMWare and it only has 512mb allocated to it. Is there anyway I can reallocate a different amount of RAM to Win 7 without doing a full reformat?

Windows On Mac :: Running Win7 (BootCamp) For Significant Amount Of Time

Jun 14, 2010

I'm a potential switcher and I'm still going back and forth between a top of the line Thinkpad T410 and MBP 15. A big reason I'm heavily considering the MBP is that I'm interested in using Mac OS, if for nothing better than it being different and new. I'm a long-time Windows guy, and I'm actually pretty impressed with Windows 7, but I have admired Mac OS from a distance. A recent line of thinking has been: I might as well get the MBP because it can run both Windows 7 and Mac OS, whereas the Thinkpad T410 can only run Windows 7. Since I've never really used Mac OS, my fear is that in a month, i'll miss Windows 7 (unlikely, but still a possibility...). In the event that I used MBP as primarily a Windows machine, I've heard that it runs hot and the power management support is poor at the moment. I plan on leaving the MBP plugged in as a desktop about 90% of the time.

So several questions:
1) Do any of you run Windows 7 through bootcamp for a significant amount of time on your Macbook Pro's?
2) Apart from poor battery management, how is Windows 7?
3) Just for reference, is there eventually going to be improved power management support and driver updates? (From what i googled, it seems like they missed their 2009 deadline, but I can't seem to find any word that they intend to eventually release updated drivers)

Windows On Mac :: Upgrading To Win7 From Vista Ultimate?

Jun 7, 2009

Right now I'm running Vista Ultimate 32bit in bootcamp and am ready for a change. What I would ideally like to do is to switch over to Win7 64bit (in order to utilize my 4gb of ram) without having to reinstall all of my windows applications and games. Right now I'm really looking for the easiest and most efficient way of doing this (assuming it's possible to transfer between a 32 and 64bit operating system).

What I had planned was to do things in this order:

1) Clone my bootcamp partition to my external hard drive using winclone.

2) Erase my bootcamp partition

3) Install Win7 to the bootcamp parition

4) Use the Windows Easy Transfer tool to migrate all of my vista files from the external hard drive over to Win7

5) Hopefully enjoy a much improved OS with all my programs fully functional

Please tell me if I have neglected something or if there are any potential problems along the way. If it maters I have an early 2008 Macbook Pro, 2.5ghz, 4gb ram, 8600m 512mb.

Jun 24, 2012

MacBook :: How To Amount LaCie External HDD?

Apr 22, 2010

A few months ago I bought a new LaCie "Little Disk" external 500 GB HDD. Has Firewire and USB power.

Formatted for both Windows and Mac (Fat32). Everything was going fine. One day the disk would not eject. That is when the problems started. I had to manually remove the disk without ejecting.

Having done this with my other LaCie external HDD without any future problems (it would always remount) I didn't think anything of it.

Since then, the disk will not mount on either the Mac or the PC. The disk will not mount using the Firewire or the USB power connectivity even though the blue power light is on.

When I open Disk Utility with the LaCie plugged in, Disk Utility crashes. When I open Disk Utility before the LaCie is plugged in and then plug the LaCie in afterwards, it crashes.

I tried plugging the LaCie in before booting my MacBook to see if that worked, but that method prevented the MB from booting at all!

Contacted LaCie about this but have yet to hear back. I'm convinced that this can be solved cleanly without any data loss. Suggestions?

MacBook :: Limited To Amount Of Memory Resources

Mar 18, 2009

I have the 2.2 blacbook, 4gb ram, 320gb hdd. Now when I first bought my macbook, I did not use Illustrator or Photoshop CS3 (for both). Now 1.5 years in, I am using Illustrator and I noticed that when I am working on both (either at the same time, or with one program closed) I sometime get the message in Illustrator "Not enough memory" or "Not enough ram" or when I am saving an image for web and devices "an unknown error has occurred"

BUT if I use Illustrator and Photoshop CS3 (for both) on Vista via bootcamp none of these errors occur. I just don't want to imaging what will happen when I use CS4. Is this due to the way Leopard is setup? I am also looking to upgrade...So do you guys think the new macbook or macbook pros would be better? I mean, my current macbook is holding up well...but I just hate these errors. I prefer to work in Leopard than Vista.

MacBook :: Start Becoming Unstable With Amount Of Ram And Processor?

Jul 29, 2009

Okay, I think this is the right thread to discuss this in, if it's not I apologize. So I got a 13" unibody MacBook back in February. I've got a 2 ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, and 2 gb 1067 MHz DDR3. I'm starting to run out of hard drive space, plus I want to dual-boot Windows 7 when it comes out, unfortunately we still live in a PC dominated world.

My questions are, if I replace it myself this will void my warranty won't it? I didn't buy any sort of AppleCare with my MacBook so I just have whatever the standard warranty is.

Second, is there a limit to the size of hard drive I can put in there? Does it have to be made by a certain manufacturer? And at any size does it start becoming unstable with my amount of ram and processor?

MacBook Pro :: Small Amount Of Coffee Spilled

Jan 1, 2010

Yesterday at around 3 PM i spilled a small amount of slightly sweetened coffee onto the upper left corner of my new 15 " Macbook Pro. The coffee barely got onto the keys and the speaker, but pretty much drenched all of the ports on the left side. The notebook immediately turned off, and in panic mode i tried switching it back on to see if any serious damage had been done. The notebook turned on, but the screen was blank. While i was wiping off the excess on the outer case, i realized this was a dumb move to make (because it probably shorted something) so i turned it off after a minute or so. I took it home and unscrewed the back case, there was very little coffee on what i think is the upper right hand side (when overturned) of the logic board, so i soaked it up as best i could, blew on it for around an hour, and set it on its side with a pretty hot lamp shining on it overnight. I put it back together this morning more than half expecting for it to just not work, but to my surprise it seems to be working fine. No keys are sticking, the battery is charging well, and on the internet with it right now.

The problem is that there was a what looked to be a little bit of a singe on one of the black rectangular transistor prongs. The melted metal easily blew away and most of the prongs are still attached. also, i haven't taken out the logic board to see what kind of damage (if any) has been done to the hidden side (not the side that shows when you take off the back case). I'm planning on doing this as soon as i can get a torx driver. I guess what I want to know is if i should take my chances with bringing it in to the apple store to see what the real damage is even though it still works, or if i should just hold out and use it till it breaks.

MacBook Pro :: Lost Very Large Amount Of Disc Space For No Apparent Reason?

May 11, 2012

I have 750GB MacBook Pro and up until the other day I showed 250GB used and 500GB unused. I discovered this because the past two days my computer would just freeze and I couldn't do anything. So I ran the Disc Utility and it found some errors and fixed them. So I'm wondering if the 400GB of lost disc space now has something to do with the computer locking up? I've searched all the folders and added up their size and still come back to 250GB that I can see. So I'm assuming there's something hidden somewhere that's eating up over half my hard disc space?

Mac Pro :: Confusion On Amount Of RAM ?

Apr 6, 2008

I've got a quad core mac pro and I'm looking to put more RAM in than the originally shipped 1 gig (2 x 512). I've seen all the helpful links for what chips to put in which riser, however I've also seen people mention keeping things in multiples of 4 or 2.

I'm looking to put in 2 x 2 for 4 additional gigs, and keeping the original 1 gig. This would bring me up to 5 gigs total, but is it a bad idea to have 5 since that is an odd number? Or is it ok because it uses up 4 slots? 6 gigs might be a little more than I can presently afford/truly need.

Mac Pro :: Amount Of Additional RAM And Distribution Of It?

May 31, 2009

I wanted to dedicate a separate thread to this question, since I think it's a big enough topic of its own.

1. How much RAM is enough? Obviously the more the merrier, but after a point it gets too costly, and I'm sure there are diminishing returns.

What do you think about 12 (6x2GB)?

I will be doing HD video editing, Audio recording in Pro Tools and Logic, and Photoshop processing.

2. Distribution - does distribution of RAM affect performance in any way? For example, is having 6 slots filled in with 1 GB ram sticks, and the other 2 filled with 3 GB sticks a good idea? Or is it better to distribute them evenly? Do certain slots get preference?
