MacBook Pro :: Unibody MBP - Wireless Receptioin When Lid Is Closed?

Nov 10, 2008

I use my MBP a lot in clamshell mode (hooked up to external ACD along with external keyboard and mouse) but I noticed the wi-fi reception is absolutely terrible when the lid is closed ...

Anyone have any idea why this is the case? (I assume the antenna not being as exposed as it would be when the lid is open)Or can this be solved with a software fix?

MacBook :: Does Unibody Heat Up With Lid Closed?

Feb 11, 2009

I wanted to use a MB in desktop mode, with a wireless mouse, keyboard, and external monitor. With the lid closed, and the external monitor as the only screen (main screen), will the MB heat up? I know it might have been an issue in early Leopard stages, but there were glitches where doing this desktop mode will cause the notebook screen to go dark and you have to reboot if you want to use the notebook's screen instead or with the desktop screen. Does this happen with the MBs now?

MacBook :: Unibody Doesn't Stay Closed On It's Side?

Aug 6, 2009

So I got my situation with the faulty hinge worked out. This is how I did it.

Video demo of the problem: [URL]

I dropped my Unibody Macbook off at the authorized repair shop (no Apple stores around Canada). They felt that the issue should be fixed but they needed apples go ahead, so they phoned Apple about it and they denied the claim. Next, the head technician at the shop didn't agree with their verdict so he sent an email to Apple with a video of the problem attached. They replied with saying that it was normal and they would offer me a sleeve for free. I wanted it fixed so I took it a step further. I called 1-800-my-apple and spoke with their tech support. She felt it should be fixed to so she let me speak with her supervisor. He also felt that it wasn't within normal spec, so he spoke with his manager (Highest level of tech support). The manager said no, all they could do for me is offer a free sleeve for it. The supervisor eventually transferred me to customer relations, where I spoke to gentlemen. I explained the problem to him and then he asked for the number of the repair shop. He spoke with the Manager of the shop and the repair was authorized.

2008 Unibody MacBook Pro Shuts Down When Lid Closed While On Battery

Jun 12, 2012

I did some google searches, but could not find anything that was exactly my issue. I have a 2008 MBP unibody. If the MBP is on battery only and I close the lid, the notebook shuts down completely. This is even when the battery is fully charged. However if while plugged in and I do the same, the computer "sleeps" as advertised. I have reset both the SMC and PRAM to no avail. The main thing that bothers me is it seems like when this happens on battery, its almost as if the computer is getting a hard shut down. The machine acts as if the battery was pulled while the lid was closed and this is obviously not good for the hardware or sofware.

MacBook :: Using Wireless When MB Closed?

Sep 30, 2010

I have a late 2008 unibody macbook connected to a brand new Samsung monitor via a displayport to DVI cable and everything works great until I shut my macbook. The external monitor continues to work fine but my wireless seems to lose connection, my desk is approximately 15 feet from a wireless repeater and Airport appears to have a full signal but it will act as if there is a bad connection until I open my macbook back up and then the internet works fine.

I was talking to a friend and he mentioned that some displayport to DVI cables do not have sufficient shielding therefore interfering with the wireless signal but if that was the issue it should be effecting the wireless signal at all times, not just when the macbook is closed.

MacBook Pro :: Unibody Waking Up And Not Connecting To Wireless Automatically

Feb 10, 2009

I recently reinstalled MAC OS X on my unibody MBP. I've installed all the updates and it's been working fine until now. When it goes to sleep automatically I press a key and it wakes up then the Airport icon in the bar at the top of the desktop stays greyed out. I have to go in and manually connect to my router each time the machine wakes from sleep.

MacBook :: Wireless Reception Better With MacBook Open Rather Than Closed?

May 22, 2009

I don't know if anybody else is seeing this with their laptop, but when I use my Apple LED display and close my laptop to use only the display, my wireless reception drops 2-3 bars. However, within seconds of opening my laptop back on (regardless of detecting the laptop's display or not) my wireless reception goes back to full. Does removing that extra layer from any kind of wireless receiver really make that much of a difference?

OS X :: Closed Wireless Network And Vista?

May 22, 2010

How do you get a Windows machine running Vista to recognize a closed/hidden network? I have a hidden network that only works with certain MAC addy's, and I added the MAC addy of the Vista machine, but it can't see it / join up. I found something online that said you had to go into some old DOS interface to do it, tried that but it still didn't work. Any advice or experience with this?

OS X :: Medicore Wireless Reception In Lid Closed Mode?

Feb 25, 2010

2.4GHz mid-2007 Macbook Pro on Leopard. Ever since getting my new monitor and running my laptop in lid closed mode, I've been getting frequent (3-8 times per day) disconnections from my wireless network. One moment the Airport menu bar icon shows full strength, next moment it's disconnected. I never had any trouble in lid open mode. Is this a known issue when running a MBP in with the lid closed?

MacBook Pro :: Use Computer In Closed Clam-shell (display Closed) Mode With An External Display?

Jun 4, 2012

I have an 13" MBP that I ordered new in April, 2012. It is running Lion. I have an external monitor that is capable of 1440x900 resolution. I have an external keyboard and trackpad hooked up, and I like to close my MBP up and stick it in a BookArc. I want to be able to have the internal display disabled and to have the MBP only allow me to put windows on the external display, so long as the lid is closed. I also want to be sure that I am taking advantage of the resolutions available on my external monitor, which are higher than those supported by the internal display (specifically 1440x900).

This doesn't seem to work because I either have to allow the MBP to continue to draw my desktop across both screens (internal and external), OR use the "mirror displays" mode, which restricts my resolution of my external monitor. This means I either forgoe the additional resolution benefits of my external monitor, or I end up with windows that fall off-the-cliff, so to speak, because they are drawn in the portion of the desktop that would be shown on my internal display (which is closed).

I've read the community support pages on using the MBP with an external monitor, most relevantly, this page. It simply recommends using the "mirror displays" option. However, this option, as I mentioned above, doesn't allow me to make use of the additional resolution, and my external display looks bad. how to keep the 13" MBP in closed clamshell position, with the internal display disabled, and use my external monitor at resolutions higher than those allowed by the 13" MBP but which are available to my external monitor when not in "mirror displays" mode?

MacBook Pro :: Front Row With Lid Closed On MB

Nov 15, 2007

On every MB I've used since they first came out, you could hook the audio and video up, close the lid, and if it went into sleep mode, the Apple Remote would trigger a "wake up" for mediacenter purposes on a TV/stereo. My SR MB w/ 10.5 doesn't do it. As soon as the lid closes, it's asleep no matter how I toggle the view between screen and external port. Front Row doesn't wake it anymore. Anyone else having this problem? I wanted to find out before calling and asking.

I could get Portal for steam using the schools internet while taking my tests.

MacBook Air :: Turned On By Itself While Closed In Bag

Jun 8, 2012

My MacBook Air was closed (which I assume means asleep) and in my bag. Today I suddenly heard a weird hum from the bag and realized that the Airport was incredibly hot and blowing all fans full speed. Of course it was inside a padded bag so there was no air to move around and things got very hot. I have no idea how long it was in there but it could have been days (it was attached to charger cable).

1) is it likely to be damaged? any way to know?

2) any way to figure out why it woke up while closed? is there a log anywhere of that kind of thing?  yesterday we had a power outage; could the Airport being cycled off/on somehow woken it up via wifi??

3) how do I prevent it from  happening again - how do I shut off any possible options that might lead it to ever wake up while the lid is closed? I heard there's something called Wake on Demand and there is also some mode where people use them (with an external monitor) with the lid closed. I'd like to disable both

I don't think it has anything to do with my wireless router, but more to do with some MBP setting.
