My MacBook Pro is not allowing me to shut it down because it says "The Finder can’t quit because some operations are still in progress", how can I find out which operations are still in progress?

I can't restart or shut down the mini, due to "operations still in progress." How do I workaround this problem? It seems to occur after I've done a Software Update. The only way I can shut down is with the power switch.

Time machine failed in progress as my hard drive failed. I have an "in progress" file on my external harddrive that is about 160 GB. I would like to try and load this back onto a new harddrive. Migration assistant is not responsive nor does Time Machine recognize the external drive when connected.

My 2008 2.4ghz Intel MacBook is getting slower and slower at running basic operations. I have tried to free up my hard drive as it was very full. I free up 40 GB+ of space, but something is still filling it back up? Here is what my profile looks like:
How do I figure out what all this "other" material is? I thought it was due to a lack of memory after upgrading to Lion, but it has been getting dramatically worse, which doesn't seem like a memory issue to me.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently made a program go off the dock so that it doesn't bother me, and I also played with some SSH settings in /etc/sshd_config and /etc/services (specifically, the ones mentioned in Rule #4 of Mac Geekery's Basic Mac OS X Security article) and now my computer won't shut down, saying that Finder won't quit.
However, the little white arrow is not below the Finder icon in the Dock. Also my desktop items and top menu disappear. Once the "Logout timed out because Finder failed to quit" window pops up, I reopen finder from the Dock and everything comes back. I have tried manually quitting the hidden server application before shutdown, so I don't think it is that. By the way it is a Mac Book running OS X 10.5.4 which i bought new last august.
I was just messing around with Speech Commands and accidentally discovered that if, in Finder, you say "Quit this application", Finder will quit!EDIT: I should also add that if you don't have any other applications open, it will reopen right away

If I go to the Finder from another application, the Finder quits and windows disappear. If I select "new finder window" finder repeatedly quits. After 10 or fifteen times (usually I just restart) I can get the finder window to stay open.
Using Safari and selecting a file to upload causes Safari to quit. Firefox works fine.
I have done a clean install. Problems persist intermittently.
Any advice on how I can fix this?
I accidentally quit finder instead of Safari this morning and now Finder will not open. I still have it in the dock but nothing will work. I also do not have the toolbar at the top either. I can still open the other icons on the dock and use them so I can get on Safari, Ical, etc. I thought I did this once before but I can't remember what I did to rectify the situation.

I've assigned the tags I want to a file, I'll get the beach ball. If I go into the Force Quit window it will say that Finder is not responding. But if I wait about 20-30 seconds it stops and I can go about my business w/o re-starting the Finder. I only noticed this after installing Yosemite. I use tags A LOT.

Q. I stopped an update installer of some Apple software and the Finder, now crashes without showing the desktop. Only the Apple logo and a spinning Beachball which never disappears. I can start up in the Unix mode and also in the Windows mode. I have an Imac with Osx 10.4. I could reinstall the system but probably I will loose a lot of unique files and poto's. In the Unix mode I have removed the Installer file from the desktop but it didn't change the startup. I have little experience with Unix.

I tried every option to empty trash... Clicking alt when I select empty trash in finder... Using terminal / see locked files...
I tried to empty trash by removing files from trash it ended copying files to my desktop instead of removing them from trash...

My itunes lags with most operations. The most annoying is when I click a track in my library, it lags for like 3 seconds, I get a pinwheel, then the track plays. Sometimes the seek bar lags a lot. Opening the "info" for a track is very slow and invokes the pinwheel to peek its head out. Editing the info and having to write it to the tag is even worse. Adding new music is very slow, as the gapless, and album art, and other info that itunes collects each are very slow, and make the rest of iTunes almost impossible to use. Tracks don't skip or anything once they start playing, and theres no lag if I just let the tracks play through. I've disabled last.fm because I know that causes lag problems with the "fingerprinting" it does. When I added 3500 songs it took hours for all the scans to complete.

I am trying to install my time machine backup. But as I open the backup it says
:The folder “Documents” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.
I did get the info on the file to unlock it but still it gives me a no entry sine. How do I install my backup to my new mac when this backup can't be opened?

My Macbook pro wouldn't turn on. I booted to the installation DVD and installed OS X to the external drive. Once the installation was done, I was able to access my laptop without any problem and I retrieved all my files from the USERS Folder. I tried to copy my old files to the external disk, before formatting the system’s internal drive and reinstalling OS X.
However, at every attempt, I’d get “some data can’t bet read or written (Error Code -36)”. I ran a Verify/Repair Disk Permissions and this is what I got:
