MacBook Pro :: Superdrive Noise After Genius Bar Replacement?
Apr 13, 2012
after a superdrive replacement at Genius Bar, this one is doing noise at start and when Macbook Pro 5,1 exits from sleep.
I check the firmware version and it's KA19.
I try to applicate the Superdrive Firmware Update 3.0 that i had from an old time machine bakcup (because i can't install it from this link : [URL] but it's annoucing that the Firmware is already applied (i did it 2 years ago with the old superdrive).
My system version is 10.7.3 What can i do and how i can apply this update to suppress this noise ?

I've had my unibody MacBook 2.4ghz for a few days, and I've been hearing a strange clicking noise coming from the superdrive. At first I thought it was the hard drive, it almost sounds like a seeking head, but upon closer inspection, the sound is definitely coming from the optical drive.
This is happening without a disc in the drive, and seems to make the noise every 15-20 seconds. It's not that loud, but loud enough to drive me crazy in a quiet environment.
I have Win XP installed on bootcamp, so I logged into windows to see if the clicking was present in a different OS (to rule out a driver issue in OSX). The issue is exactly the same in windows.
The drive does work, but I'm worried there might be something wrong with it that will cause a premature death.

After seeing another thread it reminded me of a similar problem. If you'll recall, the unibody MBs got an update that stopped the superdrive from doing the normal start up "check-to-see-if-there-is-a-disc" noise at start up. I got that update [URl] when it came out in December and voila! my noise at start up was gone. Fast forward to last week when I partitioned by HDD with windows 7 through Boot camp. Now, every time when I start the computer (even when i don't go through a boot selector, just starting OS X by default) I get that superdrive check noise at start up. It doesnt bother me all THAT much, but Im curious as to why that might have returned.

I have a 2009 15" Macbook Unibody and for as long as I can remember the superdrive has been making a loud noise when I boot up the machine. Its similar to the noise when you insert a disk. I just figured this was the lens aligning and that it was normal. My brother however works at an Apple store and has a Unibody and his is deadly silent, he also said the laptops he had used at work make no such sound. He said as long as the drive functions then its nothing to worry about.
It doesn't happen at any other time, and the drive does indeed function perfectly fine. It just bugs me when I turn my laptop on and hear a loud freaky noise. Just wondering if anyone here has this and what they think of it?

I recently purchased a new MacBook pro 13" (2012 model) yesterday. I wanted to ask if it is normal that when I press the start button that the superdrive should make a noise (as if its loading or readjusting) prior to loading onto the log-in screen?

I have a iMac 2GHZ PowerPC G5 and the SuperDrive has gone out for the second time and it is now out of the 90-day warranty. The original equipment is the MATSHITADVD-R UJ-845, but it seems to have been made in China by slave labor and gives more problems than any other single component of the iMac. Do you have any suggestions or insights about how to deal with this and/or replace it? Do you have any inside knowledge about updates to the current replacement hardware or anything like that? It's not that I don't want to take the iMac down to the Apple Store for the fix, it is more an issue of dependability and component longevity. My PC gaming rig is three years old and the CD/DVD-ROM has given no problems whatsoever while the iMac is less than a year old and has had the same component go out twice. (Background on the machine -- Machine Name: iMac G5, Machine Model: PowerMac8,2, CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (3.0), Number Of CPUs:1, CPU Speed: 2 GHz, L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB, Memory: 1 GB, Bus Speed:667 MHz, ATA Bus: MATSHITADVD-R UJ-845, Model: MATSHITADVD-R UJ-845, Revision: DBN9, Detachable Drive: No)

I have a late 2009 27" iMac.I am very capable of repairing my own machine. I replaced the HD over the holiday break without a glitch. My struggle is my SuperDrive needs replacing. It will no longer burn dual layer disks. So, I thought it would be simple to find a replacement and get one ordered. The names of drives don't really help shoppers shop by brand, etc. Mine is a "HL-DT-ST DVDRW GA11N". Nice. Try googling that...Some say that name relates to an LG brand drive, while others clearly don't agree. How is an end user supposed to replace such a part if trying to find an exact match it is so difficult? Also, there have been so many others with failed drives that I really don't want to buy a used one, as I'm sure it too would fail; however, general internet serches don't give me many options for new. Perhaps that is because I still don't know the true brand of the existing "turd" that is in my Mac.I'm tired of looking and not seeing much out there. You would think there would be clear options or ways to shop for an "upgraded and compatable" drive.

I keep reading about this new ability to do "Genius Mixes".
On my iPhone I click the Genius icon (which is too large IMHO) and it makes a playlist. Are Genius Mixes any different?

I just got my shiny new mac today. I'm ecstatic, as you can imagine. Except the optical drive is being weird. When I insert some types of burned media (Sony, TDK) it makes horrible scraping noises (I think I even smelled something bad too) and doesn't read the disc. TDK and Sony are good brands. They work on everything else I've ever tried. So, I'm guessing this isn't normal?
I tried calling AppleCare but what do you know, they're 6am to 6pm, which is great. So while I wait I wanted to ask - is this going to be an easy "they give me a new drive and I put it in" type of deal, or am I going to have to be cutting some red tape? And can I do this at the apple store?

I just got my 2.0ghz Alu Macbook a few days ago and everything works perfectly well, the thing is that after day one the magsafe started to emit a low pitched electrical whistling noise. It tends to be there a few minutes after booting into the OS and then it turns down to almost unhearable, but I experienced it returning after a few hours of use and then disappearing again. If I move close to the escape key I can hear a crackling noise emitting from the magsafe.I'm not trying to be overly nitpicky or anything but I read somewhere that if it's doing that it would be a faulty Mag-Safe board or something.
Does any one you guys know anything about this? I have the 14 days to return it as I bought it online from the Apple Store so if it's a faulty part that might die/break/ cause problems later I might have to.

Sometimes I lift and carefully move my 17-inch MBP a short distance to another flat surface without putting it to sleep mode, it starts making really loud mechanical noise when I put it down, so loud that people in the same room can hear the noise and I can feel vibrations too! What causes this? Where does this noise come from? Is my MBP defective?

My first generation unibody Macbook hasn't had any problems to this date but now it's constantly making that mechanical loading-like noise which is usually heard when the Macbook is switched on (the noise before the start up sound) or when the lid is opened to wake up the computer. Is there a fix to this?

On my 13" MacBook Pro, the hinge makes a cracking noise on the right side of the computer (near the power button) when the screen is positioned all the way back. The entire hinge also makes a loud popping noise when I adjust the screen position. The screen seems very tight, and it takes a little bit of effort to move the screen, and when the screen is moved it makes the loud popping noise.
This is probably going to make some of you guys cringe, but sometimes putting pressure down on the top of the case close to where the black hinge meets to unibody enclosure seems to stop the popping noises. Putting downwards pressure on the hinge, or flipping the computer over and putting pressure on it that way, also seems to alter how much popping noise there is.
If I mess around a bit with applying pressure on different parts of the computer around the hinge, I can usually eliminate the noise. But, the cracking noise when I put the screen all the way back is still there.Any ideas what to do? It's not interfering with the operation of the computer, it's just incredibly annoying and this is only a four month old machine which shouldn't be creaking and cracking already.

Has anyone else had problems with an old G3 Pismo making an annoying squealing noise when plugged into a charger? There's a lot of noises mentioned in mac/apple forums but none of them relate to this one. Here's what it is not:
It's not coming from the screen or the fan or the speakers (it's under the keyboard). It's not low or slightly annoying (it is a loud squeal). It happens only when the power adaptor is plugged into the laptop.(it used to cease after I unplugged the power adaptor and plugged it back in three times; now that solution doesn't stop the noise anymore). It charges ok, and runs ok, scream or no-scream. It's quiet right now, but if I move the adaptor to another plug it will start again.
I was going to live with this, but today after an hour of operating quietly it just started again, and I hate to leave the house with this going.(it will scream whether the laptop is on or off. I have a really old battery and cannot replace it (I am currently staying in Mexico for the summer). Battery life is 45 min. I haven't tried pulling the battery out. That would be too easy.
This all started when I bought a replacement power adaptor (generic),after the original one melted down, but I could stop the screaming by unplugging/plugging it in again once or twice. Then I bought an expensive iGo adaptor, and it does the same thing.
I Did the PRAM and PMU reset.I can hear it over music or the tv. It grew lower in pitch today after squealing for a half hour. I'd normally not let it go on that long, but i was
in the other room.Is my PISMO dying?

My HDD had been clicking at me for awhile on my rev a macbook air but I never bothered to take it in. Recently disk utility reported my drive as failing, so I decided to make an appointment with a genius. I've used my MBA air pretty heavily, including international travel quite a bit so it has some wear and tear.
I get there and he takes it to the back, comes back and says because of of a dent on the back of the casing (knocked it against a wall on accident), the fact the button on my touchpad was clicking and I had a screw missing in the bottom of my air that they could replace to dive but I would not like the price. It would be $900.00 and that's because they had to get the air in it's original condition appearance wise before they could send it to apple for repair

I was thinking, for the next generation MacBook Air, would you want a slightly thicker (thickest part is 0.9in, tinnest is ~0.35in) laptop with a built in Superdrive, more ports, etc, or would you perfer that Apple moves away from this with a thinner computer (0.1in thinnest, 0.6in thickest), but with same limited ports.
I would actually perfer thicker with a superdrive, since I want an air but I want it to be like a MacBook but thinner. What do you think? Btw, this is assuming the regular MacBook does not change in size, since that would sway peoples opinions.

Figured I would share my recent apple genius bar apt. I went in due to a annoying line on my late 2009 15" macbook pro. Noticed it anytime that the screen was dark or dimmed. So I took in the MacBook pro and the genius look at the issue examined claimed he could not see a thing and made me feel rather stupid. Also pointed out that my mbp was making a crack sound ever since I installed my incase hard case. He sad that is too bad its the case nothing else. Funny thing is when it made the sound another genius look at the computer and said hey that's not normal. So he felt rather dumb, but continued on with his genius opinion that it was fine. He hand it back and says everything looks and works perfect sorry you wasted a trip. So I get the mbp back open it up in the apple store and go over and tell him the mark is right on the screen and he comes ever and says nope, so he calls over two more genius and they look at the screen and say yep write him up a repair order.
I smiled exactly when the guy said that from 30 seconds of observation. The other genius just walked away and ignored me after that happened. Today I went and picked up the MBP and they replaced the screen and found out they also replaced my super drive. I was not aware there was any issues with the drive at all, but they fixed it. Also my computer is under applecare if anyone was wondering. Trying this up has made me notice I need to work in sentence structure and I cant help to think how many people don't nag the genius after they get a deny from them. Its almost like a god complex they say no its a no. Repair bill came to just under 700 dollars and I was wondering if there is anymore issues with this MBP can I request a replacement system? My apple car expires in Nov.

I tried to update my OS to 10.5.6 but failed. the update stacked at 10% percent. I went to Genius bar yesterday evening. The guy tried to install combo update for me and the nightmare started. The combo didn't work too and it came out with fail updated, file damage. He verified the disk and it said " key length invalid" and he restart my computer. Then my computer never come back anymore. It can't start up and shows some words in black background and with 4 countries languages to let me restart my computer. I tried to use safe mode restart, try to select start disk(it shows my disk and network option) but the result is the same.

After bringing them both into the genius bar and setting them side by side, the genius agreed that there were faint lines visible on light backgrounds, and is having it sent off to have the whole top housing replaced. Here's to hoping that it works out..UPDATE: so despite the fact that I have some authorization from the genius bar to have my clamshell assembly replaced, I just checked the status of my order and it says "no issues detected." I'm assuming that apple is within their right to do this, but the paperwork clearly states that the lines are visible in store to multiple geniuses.

A few weeks ago I noticed my internet running incredibly slow on one side of my room. This side being the farthest from the router. To my knowledge nothing new had happened enviromently to cause this problem. I went through the motions of reseting my router and still the problem persits. I decided to take in my Macbook Pro into the Genius Bar and they replaced the Airport and Bluetooth components. Today I finally got it back and quickly my enthusiasim was dashed to find out that I'm still haivng the same problem. I'm only having this problem on my Macbook Pro since I have both a Nexus S android phone and an Asus Transformer tablet that runs perfectly fine on that side, well all sides, of my room.

I just got my macbook pro yesterday and ran it all yesterday not hearing anything. Today when I woke it from sleep I could clearly hear the fan or hard drive going. I was in a quiet room and it's quite annoying.
istat says its at 2000 rpm so thats when I started thinking it may be the hard disk. It does pulse every now and then but thats even while it's just sitting idle.
I guess I could live with it but its just annoying. Anyone else having this?

My macbook pro 15 inch (i believe its a unibody) 2.66 ghz has been through **** and back. I traveled through 4 continents with it since I got it, dropped it numerous times, keyboard light doesnt work, upgraded to lion from Lepoard, screws missing on the bottom, macbook heats up like crazy and its starting to wear down. Im wondering if anyone has any kind of link or some kind of guide as to how much it would cost to fix my Mac. I know it wont be like new but it will be close. The genius bar and Apple may be crazy with pricing sometimes but they do the best job.

I need to send my MBP in. Rather than giving them my user account password, I've created a new account that has admin privileges. Is that all I need to do? Or can admin accounts access all the info on the computer? I've heard horror stories here of peoples' photos being looked at, FB profiles accessed, etc.

So, a couple weeks ago, I was biting my nails with the PB on my lap (yeah, I know...), and one fell underneath the Enter key on the right side. Now, I'm very OCD about all things relating to the PB, which is why that kinda pissed me off. I couldn't stop thinking about it, so I went and bought some compressed air.
This was my first time using compressed air, and it didn't really help with the fingernail (if anything, it pushed it farther down and closer to the mini fan vents right by the keys). It did, however, bring a LOT of other crap up to the surface, and now I'm determined to get this sucker cleaned.
