I want to replace the Combo drive that's in my 1.83GHz Core2Duo Mini with a Superdrive - has anyone got any suggestions for a UK store that sells one for less than ?40? All I can find are SATA ones, and I think I need a (P)ATA one?
View 1 RepliesI purchased a Refurb 17" iMac 1.83Ghz Core 2. It would have been the Education Model for what I gather. No Bluetooth, Combo Drive, no 802.11n wifi, and Intel GMA950 graphics. Apple Specs state max RAM = 2Gb (2x1Gb). Has anyone been successful with trying 4Gb (2x2Gb)? I ask because we also have a Black MacBook (MA701LL/A) and Apple Specs state max RAM is also 2Gb, and we have had 4Gb in it, and runs beautifully!
View 1 Replies View RelatedThis is a Mac Mini operating on OS 10.58. I have a CD in the combo drive, and it apparently has something recorded on it. I think this CD had started to be burned and I stopped it. The computer indicates that this CD is not blank. The result is that it will not eject, even after several attempts using the small eject arrow at the top of the desktop, the use of apple-E, and after repeated efforts with a complete shutdown -- still the disk is stuck in the drive. I suspect that it's in a loop situation, where it tries to run the CD with not effect, but it also cannot eject it.
I notice a small black square, appearing to be black plastic, at the far right end of the CD/DVD player slot at the top of the Mac Mini. In the old days there was such a hole into which one could stick a straight wire, like a heavy duty straightened paper clip, and it would physically eject a stuck disk. Is there such a thing on this Mac Mini?

One of the drives in our 2009 mac mini server 2009 has died. I have taken apart many minis so have no problem taking it apart to replace, but does anyone know which drive is the primary, "Server HD" drive? Would it be the top drive (first drive you come across during disassembly) or the bottom drive closer to the logic board with the two pads stuck on? Just wondering if anyone knows for sure so I can avoid removing the drive that's still working fine.
Also, to keep the server running in the mean time, I am booting to the second drive which is working fine. Just curious, once the dead primary drive is replaced , can I simply use carbon copy clone to copy back from the 2nd drive, or will I need to install snow leopard server back onto the new drive?
I have the above combo. Trying to play blu-ray dvd but powerdvd won't play. Mac Mini is not built for blu-ray?

Some specs state that the 2GBs of DDR2 PC5300 I currently have installed is the maximum memory that the system can handle. View 3 Replies View RelatedMy faithful and trusted Intel Mac mini 1.83 C2D that I bought new in December 2007 suddenly died during a major 10.6.3 update install. It almost completed the update and the screen went black and the light went off instantly. The power button doesn't respond at all. I had major work projects going on Sunday night when I took a break, quit all applications and did the software update and it died. I took it to the Apple Store Monday morning thinking it was the power supply. I was informed that the logic board is dead and my HD has to be wiped and OS X reinstalled. The repair would cost well over $300 and have a 90 day warranty with the same logic board installed that could fail again. Ironically enough, I had been thinking about buying another new Mac mini and a new Mac mini Server for work. That's not going to happen now. I left the Apple store with my new $600 paper weight for my desk. What would you do? This was a sad day in my faith in Apple products. Apple Mac mini lemon? Does anyone have a link to a UK based reseller where I can buy a replacement DVD drive from. I tried eBuyer and Amazon but couldn't find anything that I though was suitable.
I am going to remove the Superdrive from my 2009 mini and replace it with a second HD as detailed by ifixit [URL] I will then run OS X from the X-25M SSD and the second drive will be a 320Gb Scorpio Black which I will run XP in boot camp from ( have to use additional internal drive to boot XP from since the X25-M currently will not work with XP and I cant get XP to boot from an external drive...). This leaves my setup without a way to work with optical media so I was looking to get an external usb drive and plug it in whenever I would need to install something from a dvd, or burn a cd etcetera.
Instead of throwing away the removed superdrive though and buy another drive, how about recycling it as an external usb superdrive? I would connect it via usb with a Deltaco sata to usb adapter I have. Anyone see a reason why this would not work? Has this been done before?

I have a iMac 2GHZ PowerPC G5 and the SuperDrive has gone out for the second time and it is now out of the 90-day warranty. The original equipment is the MATSHITADVD-R UJ-845, but it seems to have been made in China by slave labor and gives more problems than any other single component of the iMac. Do you have any suggestions or insights about how to deal with this and/or replace it? Do you have any inside knowledge about updates to the current replacement hardware or anything like that? It's not that I don't want to take the iMac down to the Apple Store for the fix, it is more an issue of dependability and component longevity. My PC gaming rig is three years old and the CD/DVD-ROM has given no problems whatsoever while the iMac is less than a year old and has had the same component go out twice. I have a late 2009 27" iMac.I am very capable of repairing my own machine. I replaced the HD over the holiday break without a glitch. My struggle is my SuperDrive needs replacing.It will no longer burn dual layer disks. So, I thought it would be simple to find a replacement and get one ordered.The names of drives don't really help shoppers shop by brand, etc. Mine is a "HL-DT-ST DVDRW GA11N". Nice. Try googling that...Some say that name relates to an LG brand drive, while others clearly don't agree. How is an end user supposed to replace such a part if trying to find an exact match it is so difficult? Also, there have been so many others with failed drives that I really don't want to buy a used one, as I'm sure it too would fail; however, general internet serches don't give me many options for new. Perhaps that is because I still don't know the true brand of the existing "turd" that is in my Mac.I'm tired of looking and not seeing much out there. You would think there would be clear options or ways to shop for an "upgraded and compatable" drive.

With a sharp fingernail I seem to have damages the internal ribbon cable that connects the audio card in my 2009 Mac Mini, and am looking to source a replacement, preferably in the EU. I'm currently in the UK.The part number is 922-8809.
A Google search reveals a few parts suppliers in Europeland, but they are all charging silly prices for the cable, and US suppliers impose ridiculously high postage charges.
I have Mac Mini 1.66 Intel 2006 OS X 10.4.11 with CD-R and DVD Player that won't boot properly into single user mode using a IBM PC keyboard. I have tried the alt-s, windows key-s and control-s key combinations. from the mac keyboard hints sheet located on this web site.
I have also tried to boot with key combinations from the mac mini manual with no success. I have also tried to simply insert the install CD/DVD for MAC OS X 10.4 that came with the computer and start the computer with various key combinations and the cd/dvd drive will not boot.
What do I need to do to be able to accomplish these tasks with the PC/ Windows keyboard.
The MacBook Air USB SuperDrive never worked with any other Macs without heavy hacking. What so different about the new Mini with Server OS X?

I was looking photos on ifixit on how to do it and get an idea that if I dissassemble mini I can also replace thermal grease too (I have AC's MX3). Usually default thermal greases are silicon based and are not so efficient than MX3.
My basic question is if anyone replace thermal grease on mini already? Is it difficult to remove heatsinks from CPU and GPU? What was the temperature drop? Does mini have "push-pull" based pins for mounting heat spreaders?
what's the difference between client combo and server combo? Also, what would happen if I install both?

had a mac mini hd fail - 3 months from new, light use - and so have just fitted a new sata drive and am trying to install the os from the dvd. It always fails on a random package midway through - failed to verify package, or some such.
I bought another mini, anticipating trouble fixing the first - but i note that it won't let me install from the os dvd's from the new machine! I also have a time-machine external connected to the new mini. I could also link the new and the old via firewire, i believe.
So my question is - how do I get an OS onto the new HD, given the flakyness of the old mini's os dvd's?
the superdrive in my mini has been malfunctioning. Won't read a DVD or CD on the first try, and when it finally reads it, it's after a long time of spinning.

Is this because of hardware, firmware, software or marketing? Is there an actual hardware difference regarding the power rating of the USB interfaces on the server version of the Mini Server compared with the standard Minis? Is there something special in the boot ROM of the Mini Server that allows it to use this drive? The boot ROM version on my server is MM31.00AD.B00, is this the same on the other Mini models? I'm guessing I'd still be able to continue using the drive if I loaded the Mini Server with Snow Leopard Client.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI bought a 1.5GHz G4 Mini with Combo Drive. Ordered a Superdrive via eBay and fitted it (2 minute job - done it many times previously). Panasonic Model UJ-846-B march 2008. On this occasion, the drive fails to work. I can insert a disc and eject it (using the button on the front of the drive) but the drive isn't "seen" by the Mini. [URL] I received a second drive from the seller and it has the same problem. I assume that it doesn't have the correct "driver" firmware installed.

View 3 Replies View RelatedThis is a re-formulated post about using a SSD for boot and apps and a HDD in the optical bay for storage of files. I still want to post it here due to the MacBook Pro specifics surrounding the drives. I am putting in a 160 for the SSD / boot, as it stands right now the drive will have not more than 60GB on it with my music, 13+ GB of mail archive and other files. The rest, movies, websites, photos and any other media will reside on the storage drive in the optical bay. Applications such as iView Media Pro and Mail Steward have safe mount / unmount behavior in terms of operations so those should be fine when the disk is unmounted. I expect to have both drives running most of the time unless is gets rough or I need juice for longer spans. What I am wondering is what strategies for keeping a smooth running combo of twin drives have people been using in terms of keeping as many files off the SDD but not corrupting the OS when reading a disk and then having it unmounted?
I know the "other" thread is a good source but it is 23 pages long at this point but enough people are doing this now that it will be a common question as some point and it is really only touched upon a few times in the other thread. I have used CCC to dupe my current data in 2 locations, so I am safe to muck around with this now. I would expect it to be fine to boot off of any one of the three drives to move the 60GB working set and OS onto the SSD. Should I use one of my external backups to do the initial boot and then re-boot out of the optical to set up the clone to the SSD? It kind of makes sense to me given the fact that the HDD with the native OS will have moved from one SATA location to the other. This just seems different to me than my desktop because this is a mobile device and the way power / drives and other little details interact is worth looking into.
