MacBook Pro :: Superdrive Start Up Noise CAME BACK
Feb 2, 2010
After seeing another thread it reminded me of a similar problem. If you'll recall, the unibody MBs got an update that stopped the superdrive from doing the normal start up "check-to-see-if-there-is-a-disc" noise at start up. I got that update [URl] when it came out in December and voila! my noise at start up was gone. Fast forward to last week when I partitioned by HDD with windows 7 through Boot camp. Now, every time when I start the computer (even when i don't go through a boot selector, just starting OS X by default) I get that superdrive check noise at start up. It doesnt bother me all THAT much, but Im curious as to why that might have returned.

I recently purchased a new MacBook pro 13" (2012 model) yesterday. I wanted to ask if it is normal that when I press the start button that the superdrive should make a noise (as if its loading or readjusting) prior to loading onto the log-in screen?

My first generation unibody Macbook hasn't had any problems to this date but now it's constantly making that mechanical loading-like noise which is usually heard when the Macbook is switched on (the noise before the start up sound) or when the lid is opened to wake up the computer. Is there a fix to this?

I've had my unibody MacBook 2.4ghz for a few days, and I've been hearing a strange clicking noise coming from the superdrive. At first I thought it was the hard drive, it almost sounds like a seeking head, but upon closer inspection, the sound is definitely coming from the optical drive.
This is happening without a disc in the drive, and seems to make the noise every 15-20 seconds. It's not that loud, but loud enough to drive me crazy in a quiet environment.
I have Win XP installed on bootcamp, so I logged into windows to see if the clicking was present in a different OS (to rule out a driver issue in OSX). The issue is exactly the same in windows.
The drive does work, but I'm worried there might be something wrong with it that will cause a premature death.

I check the firmware version and it's KA19.
I try to applicate the Superdrive Firmware Update 3.0 that i had from an old time machine bakcup (because i can't install it from this link : [URL] but it's annoucing that the Firmware is already applied (i did it 2 years ago with the old superdrive).

I have a 2009 15" Macbook Unibody and for as long as I can remember the superdrive has been making a loud noise when I boot up the machine. Its similar to the noise when you insert a disk. I just figured this was the lens aligning and that it was normal. My brother however works at an Apple store and has a Unibody and his is deadly silent, he also said the laptops he had used at work make no such sound. He said as long as the drive functions then its nothing to worry about.
It doesn't happen at any other time, and the drive does indeed function perfectly fine. It just bugs me when I turn my laptop on and hear a loud freaky noise. Just wondering if anyone here has this and what they think of it?

I just got my shiny new mac today. I'm ecstatic, as you can imagine. Except the optical drive is being weird. When I insert some types of burned media (Sony, TDK) it makes horrible scraping noises (I think I even smelled something bad too) and doesn't read the disc. TDK and Sony are good brands. They work on everything else I've ever tried. So, I'm guessing this isn't normal?
I tried calling AppleCare but what do you know, they're 6am to 6pm, which is great. So while I wait I wanted to ask - is this going to be an easy "they give me a new drive and I put it in" type of deal, or am I going to have to be cutting some red tape? And can I do this at the apple store?

I am not 100% sure what the offical name of the start up noise is when you turn on your Macbook, however that is all I am geeting when I turn it on. I push the power button, it makes that start up noise of the disc drive... sits... and makes the noise again... sits... makes the noise again and so on and so on. The screen doesnt change at all, just blackness. I was able to start it up once with the start up disc and I thought that was the fix, so before going to sleep I powered down. Woke up the next morning same old bs AND it will not start up off the disc again. Another time after letting it sit and try to boot up for awhile (30mins) it finally did! However after 20-30 mins the screen kind of flickered and then everything froze. Can't get it to turn on at all now. Just that noise over and over and over and over again.

I wanted to use Onyx to check the status of my new macbook pro and it told me that the startup volume needed to be repaired. I tried first of all a safeboot as I understood that this would do a disc check but I wasnt told anything from that.
So I then inserted the disc OS X install dvd (10.6) and restarted the MB. After the chimes, i pressed the 'c' button. I have tried two times, once just pressing the button, once pressing & holding (no-where does it say which to do). I have found on searching alo that I may need to press the 'option' key but I have no idea where this is!
Anyway, the disc makes a repetative noise and then ejects, and then the MB starts up.. but not from the disc.
What am I doing wrong please??!

Well first off let me say I was pretty intoxicated and not thinking straight. I took out my sd card out of my camera, and while looking dead on at my screen i reached over to the side and pushed my sd card all the way though.
After realizing what I did i proceded to panic, yell, curse, and punch myself in the forhead. I called my buddy who works at an Apple retail store and told me that if I brought it in and they had to open it up I would be charged for the part and labor (around$200+).
I again proceded to cuss and punch myself till he suggested I hold the 27'' beheameth sideways and jump up and down. Once I heard it drop i knew I had a solid chance of geting it out. Since there's the dust flaps in the superdrive slot it wouldn't just come out by shaking. I literally had to hold it sideways on my knee and take a hairclip in order to get it out.

My iMac was in the middle of burning a CD on Sunday and spat it out halfway through. Next it was spitting every disc out, including the OS disk at firmware. Anyway, Applecare confirmed the superdrive needed replaced. The machine is only just over a month old (but it is the old top end 3.06GHz model)! So, it went off for repair in perfect order, all packaged up in the original packaging. Based on the advice on others, I also took many photographs before I dropped it off at the repair place. When I picked up the machine today the back of it has been scratched in a number of places. The screen also has loads of dust/debris underneath the glass display.

My Mac is not starting and is asking me to reboot from the time machine however it is showing me that the latest complete backup is form September. Should I reboot from there and once I am in I will be able to rescue latest backups or should I re-install the OS? If I re-install the OS will I loose everything or will things still be there, including folders that were loose in the desktop as opposed to being inside the hard drive?

My G5 has been making more noise at start up. It sounds like one of the fans is making a grinding "rrrrrrhhhh" noise. My living space if very cold and quite dusty (warehouse). I notice it more on colder mornings ( inside temp 45° - 65°F ). Should I refrain from using my machine on cold mornings/nights until the heat is running?

So I'm seriously enjoying my "new" BlackBook, but I'm having a bit of an issue. Sometimes after shutting it down, it doesn't want to start back up. I know that it's going to happen if I plug in the MagSafe connector and the light immediately turns bright green. The only way I've found to fix this is to take out the (non-functional) battery, let it sit for a minute or two, and then plug the connector back in. This always makes it work.
If the LED on the connector turns a very dark (or dim) green, and then turns bright green, I know it's going to work fine. I believe I've tried an SMC reset and it doesn't seem to work. Any ideas on what the issue could be? Since my battery doesn't work (and I'm suspecting that the faulty battery is part of the issue) I am often turning on and off the computer to move from one place to another. I'm getting a new battery soon, but I just don't have the funds for it right now.

Macbook screen went black even though the mac booted up properly - from the startup sounds. I took the back cover off and checked the power connector - it looked just slightly angled out so it probably was getting intermittent power [over last 2 weeks it would come on and but sometimes not until it died completely today]. Anyway, once I took the back cover off from the back [above the battery] and made sure the connector was secure it worked fine now. Might be a good tip for someone vs the time to go to the apple store.

My Mum has just turned on our family computer- an iMac G5, 1.9ghz 17" (first model with built in iSight).
It gets to the grey screen with the apple, with the loading icon below it, then after about a minute the fans turn out pretty loudly, and it goes no further, just stays on the grey screen.

I have an iBook 500Mhtz PPC G3, 384 RAM, 10GB HD, Dual USB. Several months ago, I opened it up and it simply would not start up. No start up sound, no noise from the fans/HD/anything, motionless. Completely dead. I've held (many times) the PMU, and tried almost anything. Is there anything else I can do to get it to AT LEAST turn on? The battery is dead, and the charger is fine, but the battery won't charge. I tested the charger on a PB G4. I'd rather sell the whole computer as a working computer. I figured I'd get more money that way. do I need to sell it for parts?

I just got my 2.0ghz Alu Macbook a few days ago and everything works perfectly well, the thing is that after day one the magsafe started to emit a low pitched electrical whistling noise. It tends to be there a few minutes after booting into the OS and then it turns down to almost unhearable, but I experienced it returning after a few hours of use and then disappearing again. If I move close to the escape key I can hear a crackling noise emitting from the magsafe.I'm not trying to be overly nitpicky or anything but I read somewhere that if it's doing that it would be a faulty Mag-Safe board or something.
Does any one you guys know anything about this? I have the 14 days to return it as I bought it online from the Apple Store so if it's a faulty part that might die/break/ cause problems later I might have to.

Sometimes I lift and carefully move my 17-inch MBP a short distance to another flat surface without putting it to sleep mode, it starts making really loud mechanical noise when I put it down, so loud that people in the same room can hear the noise and I can feel vibrations too! What causes this? Where does this noise come from? Is my MBP defective?

On my 13" MacBook Pro, the hinge makes a cracking noise on the right side of the computer (near the power button) when the screen is positioned all the way back. The entire hinge also makes a loud popping noise when I adjust the screen position. The screen seems very tight, and it takes a little bit of effort to move the screen, and when the screen is moved it makes the loud popping noise.
This is probably going to make some of you guys cringe, but sometimes putting pressure down on the top of the case close to where the black hinge meets to unibody enclosure seems to stop the popping noises. Putting downwards pressure on the hinge, or flipping the computer over and putting pressure on it that way, also seems to alter how much popping noise there is.
If I mess around a bit with applying pressure on different parts of the computer around the hinge, I can usually eliminate the noise. But, the cracking noise when I put the screen all the way back is still there.Any ideas what to do? It's not interfering with the operation of the computer, it's just incredibly annoying and this is only a four month old machine which shouldn't be creaking and cracking already.

Has anyone else had problems with an old G3 Pismo making an annoying squealing noise when plugged into a charger? There's a lot of noises mentioned in mac/apple forums but none of them relate to this one. Here's what it is not:
It's not coming from the screen or the fan or the speakers (it's under the keyboard). It's not low or slightly annoying (it is a loud squeal). It happens only when the power adaptor is plugged into the laptop.(it used to cease after I unplugged the power adaptor and plugged it back in three times; now that solution doesn't stop the noise anymore). It charges ok, and runs ok, scream or no-scream. It's quiet right now, but if I move the adaptor to another plug it will start again.
I was going to live with this, but today after an hour of operating quietly it just started again, and I hate to leave the house with this going.(it will scream whether the laptop is on or off. I have a really old battery and cannot replace it (I am currently staying in Mexico for the summer). Battery life is 45 min. I haven't tried pulling the battery out. That would be too easy.
This all started when I bought a replacement power adaptor (generic),after the original one melted down, but I could stop the screaming by unplugging/plugging it in again once or twice. Then I bought an expensive iGo adaptor, and it does the same thing.
I Did the PRAM and PMU reset.I can hear it over music or the tv. It grew lower in pitch today after squealing for a half hour. I'd normally not let it go on that long, but i was
in the other room.Is my PISMO dying?

I was thinking, for the next generation MacBook Air, would you want a slightly thicker (thickest part is 0.9in, tinnest is ~0.35in) laptop with a built in Superdrive, more ports, etc, or would you perfer that Apple moves away from this with a thinner computer (0.1in thinnest, 0.6in thickest), but with same limited ports.
I would actually perfer thicker with a superdrive, since I want an air but I want it to be like a MacBook but thinner. What do you think? Btw, this is assuming the regular MacBook does not change in size, since that would sway peoples opinions.

I just got my macbook pro yesterday and ran it all yesterday not hearing anything. Today when I woke it from sleep I could clearly hear the fan or hard drive going. I was in a quiet room and it's quite annoying.
istat says its at 2000 rpm so thats when I started thinking it may be the hard disk. It does pulse every now and then but thats even while it's just sitting idle.
I guess I could live with it but its just annoying. Anyone else having this?
