Hardware :: What Is Best Data Recovery Option?

Sep 21, 2010

DATA RECOVERY SOFTWARE - OR - DATA RECOVERY COMPANIES?

I shot a film this summer on RED ONE digital camera, and now BOTH of my Lacie 2TB drives in which we deposited the footage aren't working. I NEED to recover data.

In researching here and online, I've looked into software options such as Data Rescue 3 and Disk Warrior.

I've also investigated companies in which you mail the drive into them. Lacie themselves recommended a CA outfit called Drive Savers Data Recovery; I've also investigated On Track Data Recovery (the world's largest), and ESS Data Recovery. There's also Tekserve here in Manhattan.

Does anyone have any experience with any of these options/companies specifically? Huge differences in price; everyone seems confident, ESS the most realistic.

What is the best route to recover my film?

The drives have about 800 GB of film footage - in the form of RED's proprietary software - R3D file extensions, plus Quicktime proxies.

Here are the drive issues:

DRIVE #1 - My Master copy of film: my iMac had OS 10.4.11; the drive mounted no problem; I upgraded a few days ago to Snow Leopard 10.6.4. Now it doesn't mount. It's in Disk Utility but the volume line is greyed out. The Apple Store folks tested my iMac and my drive and said it's the drive. They said it was just a coincidence that the drive developed an issue at the same time I upgraded my OS.

DRIVE #2 - was initialized in a Dell laptop, but NOT formatted.

MacBook Pro :: WiFi Not Detected In Internet Recovery Mode

Aug 30, 2014

I am trying to reinstall the OS, and got into Internet Recovery mode, and got a list of Wifi networks to select, but my own was not one of them.  I even clicked "Other" (or something like that) to enter the SSID and passphrase, but that was rejected.  I am now piggy-backing on a nearby wifi, with all the risks that entails.  Why won't my Mac see my own Wifi?  (Everything else in the house sees "five bars", including my wife's Macbook Air and my iPhone.)

IMac (Intel) :: Stuck In Recovery Mode

So I recently erased my 2007 iMac through recovery mode. That process went fine. But when I went to go install the latest version of the mac OS (still through recovery mode) it comes back with a window reading basically that process I just did failed. I did this process many times, it doesn't work, and now at the moment I have iMac sitting in recovery mode and I can't do anything on it. Should I bring it into a store?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Stuck In Recovery Mode - Cannot Erase Hard Drive

Mar 28, 2012

I tried reformatting while running Snow Leopard, but the option was grayed out and the install disc made the computer hang at the white bootup screen. I figured I'd just upgrade to Lion and do a clean install (not an option).

After upgrading to Lion, I booted into recovery to erase the hard drive. I did it and it took less than ten seconds (bad sign).

Now I can't get past recovery and the hard drive is still full.

MacBook :: WiFi Antenna Cables Stuck Suffered From Excessive Pressure

Oct 18, 2009

Does your first gen MacBook have WiFi problems? Here's why mine has. I opened it for the first time, and here's what I found. These are the WiFi antennas cables: They've been cut by the simply opening and closing the display, for more than three years. The cables are stuck in a bad place and suffer from excessive pressure and contortion. Of course my Apple care is finished... but all these wifi problems in the apple support forum make me think every first gen macbook is concerned [URL] This is a MacBook Core Duo 2.0 ghz (Early 2006).

OS X :: Broken Option Keys And Stuck In Boot Camp?

May 22, 2010

Recently I was unfortunate enough to witness the spilling of gin and tonic on my precious macbook pro. Luckily, having had spillage issues before, I reduced the damage and now have merely a few keys not working (including both option keys) and some dodgey letters.

After turning off my mac it restarted automatically in boot camp mode and with both option keys broken I can't get back into OS :/ What's more, my boot camp has no sound and the internet doesn't work so it's pretty much turned into an iphone charger.

I was wondering if anybody knew what I could do to rescue my files and what I should do about the broken key situation?

Intel Mac :: Why Is WiFi Option Grayed Out

Jun 26, 2012

I bought my late 2011 iMac used from a good friend that barely used it. From day 1, the WiFi hasn't worked and I could never figure out why. It hasn't been a big deal until recently because I prefer a wired connection anyway.. The problem is that I moved into a house and the owner's wireless router is located in the living room.. So now I need to get it working again. After troubleshooting multiple times, here is some information that you will probably need to help me:

-When I open Network Diagnostics, the only two options available are Ethernet and Other. The External Modem and Wi-Fi options are grayed out and un-clickable.

-When I go to System Preferences>Network, the only things shown in the left sidebar are Ethernet, FireWire, and Bluetooth PAN. When I click the "+" button to add a network, under the "interface" dropdown, the options available are: FireWire, Ethernet, Bluetooth DUN, VPN, PPPoE, and 6 to 4 (no wi-fi obviously).

-Under System Report>Wi-Fi, everything appears to be installed and running correctly. I'm not an expert on Wireless settings, but it seems right. If a screenshot is needed of that, just ask.

MacBook Pro :: Auto-recovery Microsoft Word 2008 - No Auto-recovery Files?

Apr 4, 2012

I am trying to recovery a file created in Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac. The file was lost after a power outage. In an attempt to recover the file, my first thought was to check for the file in the Microsoft AutoRecovery 2008 folder within my hardrive. However, the folder only contains a total of four files! Why? If my Microsoft Word is set up to auto save a document every 10 minutes...then how is it possible the folder could only contain 4 files? I am at a loss of how else to recover this file. I am currently attempting to do so with a free trial of Data Recovery Software to see if the file I lost even still exists, with no success so far.

Mac Pro :: No Recovery Partition - How To Make USB Recovery Boot Drive

Sep 12, 2014

Alternatively, can I make one with my 10.8.5 MacbookPro at home and run it here on my Lion system?

MacBook Pro :: Wifi Reception Is Terrible / Constant Wifi Dropouts?

Apr 27, 2010

My 2010 15" MBP has constant Wifi dropouts, sometimes minutes at a time. Sometimes I have to reconnect. Yet it gets 4 bars. My MacBook never had these problems. It's generally slower, too. It's now useless for online video like Hulu. Anyone else seeing this? I wonder whether it's hardware (e.g. they moved the antenna, and/or because of the metal case) or software/drivers? I'm going to submit feedback after input from ya'll.

MacBook :: Will Old Titanium Running 10.3 Be Able To Connect To Wifi With A Usb Wifi Antenna?

Mar 7, 2012

I have a pretty old Titanium Mac Book that runs OS 10.3.9.  It's a moderately slow machine, but still works-  and although I realize that it won't be able to stream video or anything, I figure it would work for email, and basic web browsing-  But I'm wondering if it's going to be compatible with any new products such as a USB wifi antenna - because the room where I want to use it won't alow for an ethernet connection-   Also, will the old 10.3.9 OS allow me to connect wifi to the newer airport extreme base stations?

MacBook :: Won't Work With Wifi Network / Drops Wifi

Jan 10, 2011

MacBook. 2Ghz Intel Core Duo. OS Snow Leopard 10.6.6. I'm running a 2006 MacBook with Snow Leopard. A few months back it started dropping wifi connection. Airport would show no connection but would list my network along with others in my building. If I tried to connect with my WPA password it would just time out. At this time I was running Leopard.

Since then I've done a few things.Tried running the Netgear router with no encryption at all (same thing happens). Will lose connection and then time out trying to connect
I've tried the MacBook in a coffee shop with wifi access and at my parents (same NetGear router) and at my new apartment with a horrible Orange Livebox.
Taken the MacBook in to see the genius bar at Glasgow Apple store. Worked fine for them, but I explained it was intermittent but we could not force it to fail. I'm sure if it ran for an hour it would.
At present if I have the MacBook in the living room (where the Livebox router is situated) its fine and wont drop connection. If I walk some 5m to my bedroom it will work for approximately half and hour and then lose it. A few days ago I bought the Snow Leopard upgrade and installed it last night. MacBook runs a hell of a lot faster (yay!) but moving it away from the router and its dead as disco in half an hour.

So to clarify, the MacBook has been tested on 4 wifi networks/ locus with same issue. iPhone, Xbox 360 and PS3 all have no issues with dropping connection no matter where they are in the apartment.

Apartment is a new build and its walls are not made out of lead or kryptonite. Is this a hardware issue rather than software? When updating to Snow Leopard it was an update to the existing OS of Leopard not a clean install.

MacBook :: Restore OS Without Recovery HD?

Sep 9, 2014

I'm running OSX 10.6.8 on an old 2007 Macbook. I replaced the HD on the computer a year or two ago (I rarely ever use the computer) and I must have reformatted the drive to exclude the Recovery HD. Now I want to restore my Macbook to factory defaults (delete and wipe everything) and I can't because there is no Recovery Mode to boot into.

Nothing happens when I hold Command+r on reboot, and when I hold Option on reboot I only see my Mac HD, which confirms that the Recovery HD does not exist. What else can I do to restore my Macbook? I tried to download and install the Recovery drive that boots off of a flash drive, but it requires OSX 10.7. Do I need to upgrade my OS and then boot from a flash drive? Is there really no other way to just DELETE everything?
