View 2 RepliesWhen I reboot, the audio is muted. The slider audio from the top finder window is totally greyed out and when I goto system preferences it seems to lag and stall out. After many attempts I am able to get into the sound prefences and see that everything else is muted and I am unable to change anything.
I am assuming it is trying to use the optical audio or something like that. I try to open the audio Midi app in utilities but I do not see much options to change. I am not sure what to change.
I had the similar problem with a laptop that went to mute due to the optical audio jack getting messed up so it would default to optical audio. However, pluging headphones in I could still hear audio. On my mac pro the headphone jack does not work either.
After trying to reset the PRAM and SMC settings, disk permissions I am still having the problem.
I'm about to do a fresh install of Lion on a spare Hard drive and see if them problem is there present. I have added a Blu-ray burner to the lower bay in my mac pro. Could this cause a problem with audio?

My audio button is stuck in mute and I have tried to PRAM reset and nothing has worked. Is there anything else to try.
View 2 Replies View Related I have a mac mini (solo intel) 10.4 OSX. I have no audio output when attaching an external input source like a CD player or ipod to the input jack on my Mac Mini. Audio output from ITunes or movies clips in IPhoto works fine. I have checked the cables and connections. I have checked the "sound" location in System Preferences to make sure the "built in output" source is selected. The input volume display shows that the audio input is being registered. I have checked "system profiler" in the Utilities folder in Applications to make sure the "built in output" AKA headphone outlet is recognized.
I have the "Soundflower" App. installed but turned off.
why the audio output from the internal sources like ITunes and IPhoto music clips work but the audio output from an external input source does not? Is there some software or a driver required for audio output from an external source that is not required for audio output from an internal source?
This is probably a silly question, but I was wandering if it was possible to pass audio from the line-in on a MacBook Pro directly to an audio output? I was thinking of buying a PS3 and connecting it to my external monitor, and thought I may be able to play sound through my soundsticks rather than buying more speakers (budget is an issue!).
I know this used to be possible in the "Audio MIDI Setup" application bundled with the system, but I can't seem to find the option in the new version (maybe something to do with aggregate devices?)
I recently had a cracked panel on an old Macbook Pro 15 inch (A1260) and just replaced it with a new one. Ever since i replaced it i have had no sound. Now i consider myself an experienced mac user so i have checked under my sound prefences and it doesnt list anything under sound input or output and things are grayed out. I also had the guy who replaced my panel, who is also my friend, check everything out and he hasn't been able to figure out why there is no sound. he gave me a usb midi device that shows up and works but when unplugged theres nothing.
Another thing that has started is, video online will stop every 11 seconds, and thats with me clicking on the bar when it stops playing after the first 11 seconds.

I am about to buy a 15 in. MBP and I'll be going on a trip soon. I was wondering if there was anything I could get that would let me both use my mac as a tv for my xbox and use a tv as an additional monitor.
Something that would have RCA input/output (the red, white, yellow cords) and would connect to my mac with USB or hopefully firewire 800 (express card 32 would work as well).
i want to change my audio out put in to input device for record my not stop mix

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a (little) problem with my new MacBook Air 2014 (13 inch.) running on 10.9.4 : when I connect it to any HDMI device (Philips monitor or Sony TV through Marantz amplifier) through a mini DP-HDMI adapter, I can't set audio output to HDMI because this option does not exist... However, I have video signal.
I've tried lots of "solutions", but nothing is working :
- Shutting down, restarting, sleeping with and without the cable connected
- Change HDMI cable
- Reset PRAM
Finally, I think the problem come from the Macbook because I have an other laptop (a Thinkpad with a mini displayport, with Ubuntu 14.04) and the video and sound are working normally.

The speakers on my Macbook have suddenly stopped working. If you plug headphones in, fine. In the system preferences, 'built in speakers' are no longer an option for audio output. Just 'digital out'. When I try and change the volume of the speakers, the symbol is greyed out, and there's a little "you can't do this" symbol.
I have a Macbook black 2.0ghz with 10.5.8
So while at a gig last night with my band, we ran a video from my computer to screens on stage. The chain looked like so:
MBP -> Mini-DisplayPort -> MDP/HDMI converter -> 4-way HDMI Splitter -> LCD Monitors
Now sometime during takedown, someone just decided to unplug something from my computer without consulting me or taking any proper precautions. Now my audio is stuck on Digital Output (type digital optical out). Here's what I know, and what I've tried.I have reset the PRAM/NVRAM?I have killed coreaudio a few times with no luck?I have deleted without progress:
1) com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist
2) com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist
3) com.apple.systemsound.plist
I have restarted my computer?I have attempted to use Audio MIDI Setup?I have googled:
1) com.apple.systemsound
2) macbook pro stuck on digital out audio no red light
3) force resetting to internal audio osx
4) force reset coreaudio osx

I have a macbook pro and the audio on it the other day was perfect. Now i cant get it to work. It wont let me un mute it and under system preferences it says that no output devices are available.

My sound output preference is set to mute and is highlighted in light gray so that the preference can't be changed. Also, simultaneously, the sound control in the toolbar is gone and is replaced with an eject symbol that responds "SuperDrive F12" when clicked on.

I have a late 2006 Mac Pro 3Ghz dual. Recently the volume dropped down to nothing and when I access the control panel, I see the mute button checked on all outputs except the digital (the one I have never used). All inputs are also muted and I cannot uncheck any of them. The little volume indicator is sitting in the lower middle of my screen and won't go away.
I have tried:
Zapping PRAM
repairing permissions
trashing the sound pref
using a different account
multiple restarts and shut downs
unplugged and re-plugged both the headphones and line out
And none of it has worked. The sound indicator shows up with the startup screen and never goes away and I have no sound. If I drag the volume slider up, it just goes back down. I am guessing this is a failing motherboard, being that I have lost my "A" RAM slot, but I really hope not. This is going to be unbearable to live with.
Recently I was watching Netflix on my air when static started coming out of the speakers. I paused the movie, shut down anything I had running and it was still static just not as loud. I turned off my Macbook, turned it on and nothing. It has been stuck on mute for a few days now.
Note: I've was not using headphones when this occurred. I had tried plugging in headphone and still no sound, I unplugged them, no sound.

For some reason, I can't get Logic Express 8 to output audio to my Mac's attached speakers. It outputs fine through my M-Audio interface, though, but I'd just like to listen without headphones.
my headphones will only go about halfway into the headphone jack and the volume is stuck on mute. it looks like there is something sticking out inside of the headphone jack.

Apart from soundflower, which no longer works, is there any way to mute the audio stream while it is still being recorded with, for example. audacity?

Is there anyway to mute incoming audio when using iChat video?
I'd rather not mute the entire system as I would just like to mute incoming audio when I'm on webcam with my girlfriend. When I was on my PC and used AIM for webcam, there was that option.
I am trying to format a hard drive that I put in an enclosure, I have two of these drives and the other one works, but when I tried to format the other one, I get an input/output error, I have tried to format it on a windows, and linux box, the windows says it formats it but it just well doesnt, and the linux box would display an error message, dont remember it though. This is really getting on my nerves, It will just freeze the mac, and I get the spinning beach ball.
View 2 Replies View RelatedThe hard drive in my Mac crashed recently so I have installed new hardware and need to format the internal drive to re-install Leopard. But when I try to either erase or partition the drive from Disk Utility, I get the Partition Failure : Input/Output Error message. Can anyone provide any advice on a fix for this or is it a OS error that I can't get around?
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo I have an IDE DVD burner that I have inserted into my powermac G4. It has been taken out of a windows computer. The drive seems to work well other than when I burn a disc it tells me that it failed... However the disk works just fine. Thats not the issue the issue is the input output error that I am getting when trying to back up my OS X disc. I found instructions that have worked but it was a pain in the @$$ to do and I wasn't able to do it from my computer due to the input output error 0 that I received... The only thing that I can think of is that this is due to the DVD burner that I have used to read the disc?? Would that be correct? I was able to complete the back up from a friends powerbook G4 no problem.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI would like to find a way or an app that would allow me to change the input AND output sound device with one click. I realize you can to ALT-Sound icon, but you have to individually choose the input and output.
The idea is this: when I switch to a USB headphone with mic, and would always want both the input and output to be the headset.

I can feed sounds into my iMac with line input but no sound comes out vis internal speakers. I can record the input sound using Amadeus and play through gives me sound output. When not using Amadeus although input is set to line in and output to internal speakers no sound comes out. There appears to be some internal disconnection between input and output.

I have audio that is being sent to my MBP through an audio in line that I would like to monitor for audio quality. The only way I know how to listen in real time to the audio is by way of Audio Recorder, but it seems a little unnecessary to have a recording application open simply to listen to my media that is being sent in. Is there a feature already part of OS X that allows me to turn this on? I looked in system prefs, but couldn't find anything to enable this. I will resort to audio recorder if I have to, but would be very happy if this was already a feature.

I have this question about the MBA: on my MBP, the headphone jack allows me to use my iPhone headphones when skyping, i.e. it has input as well as output functionality. Does the MBA have the same feature?
