MacBook Pro :: Slight Vibrations When Media Played On Loud Volume
Aug 14, 2010
I'm starting to feel vibrations and some kind of "staticky" sound when I play any videos or music near or at loudest volume. Could it be possibly due to a loose screw? I noticed that on the bottom of my notebook, one screw seems to be slightly looser than the others.

Anyways, at the moment my mac is around 6 months old and just recently I am noticing that the fan is starting to vibrate- like when I type on the mac with my palms rested on the computer I can feel the vibrations. Now it is subtle but was not there before. As I am typing this the fan is at 2000 rpm. Also, when I am not out with the computer. I hook it up to my 23 inch monitor and a portable keyboard. Now when I do this I can hear a very loud noise coming form the computer while using it as a desktop. Almost as it its straining to use it. Its not so much a violent noise as it is that the fan seems to be over working.
I dont know if I am getting paranoid or if this is a serious problem- I have a 3 year warranty from bestbuy. The small vibrations I can feel form the computer seem to be like a small issue- however my friend beside me with the same model- her mac is silent and doesn't vibrate subtly. However, I am more worried about the louder noise it makes when I hook it up at work. Like when i put the computer to sleep I can tell a substantial noise different in terms of it going silent after I put it to sleep.

Sometimes I lift and carefully move my 17-inch MBP a short distance to another flat surface without putting it to sleep mode, it starts making really loud mechanical noise when I put it down, so loud that people in the same room can hear the noise and I can feel vibrations too! What causes this? Where does this noise come from? Is my MBP defective?

Whenever I startup my macbook pro recently, the small startup tune has suddenly become really loud and there doesn't seem to be any way of making it quieter. Anybody with any idea what caused it and how to solve it?

I boot the iMac, the volume of the single note that it makes when starting up is very loud. I've turned the volume down but when it reboots, it goes back to the original loud setting.

I have spent a lot of time over the last two years trying to get my itunes library organized as well as getting good digitized versions from my vinyl records as well as CDs. I was pleased with my results and then I added the songs to itunes. I could not believe how inconsistent the sound quality was. Invariably the volume is always lower. [Do not post a reply such as: Check the volume controls in itunes proper as well as in itunes preferences (i.e., Sound Check, Sound Enhancer) & the Volume Adjustment in the Information pane under Options for particular songs.] I tried all of those means of adjusting volume. They do NOT work.
There is something more insidious at work in itunes which prevent good sound reproduction. I will give an example. I have played Frankie Valle and the Four Season's song "C'Mon Marianne" on the OS X system sound (i.e. clicking the play button to the song file when selected on the desktop or wherever it resides) as well as in Amadeus Pro. The song sounds great. When I play it when it's in the itunes' library the first part of the song is too lound and then when Frankie Valle starts singing his voice is at a significantly reduced volume.
I have edited the foregoing song in Amadeus Pro to a very high volume (i.e., Effects>Amplify), reloaded it into itunes and it still does not inprove the volume of Frankie's voice in the song, even though the rest of the song is somewhat louder. I have played with the Equalizer in itunes to no effect. It just does not work.
Now, I would glading move away from itunes and use another media player. However, I have other Apple devices through which I listen to music. And the only way I know of to listen,e.g., on the iphone is through itunes.
The other related problem with itune, or should I say iCloud, is icloud match. The icloud Match has taken great sounding music and given me back music of an inferior quality, even though it is a Matched AAC format.

I was having problems with the external drive where I store my Time Machine backups, so I tried plugging and unplugging the drive but could not mount the drive. I ran Disk Utility and tried to verify the disk, which told me the disk needed to be repaired. I tried to repair the disk only to get an error message that Disk Utility could not repair the disk and it needed to be reformatted. So I tried to erase the disk with Disk Utility only to get the error message "Volume erase failed: Media kit reports not enough space on this device for requested operation". I am not sure what else to try at this point and could not find any similar questions here.
The drive in question is a 3TB USB Seagate Backup + Desk Media, formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). It's divided into two partitions, one of which (2.2 TB) holds only Time Machine backups of my desktop and laptop and the other of which (800GB) is formatted similarly with some files stored on it. I was able to verify and repair this other partition. I'm running Disk Utility 13 on an iMac (2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) running OSX 10.8.5 ...

So to avoid buying new hard drives one after another I decided to do something about it. I had this annoying vibrations in the palm rest area that spread to the left side also. Of course I did not want to part with the speed of 7200rpm HDD so I decided to take a step forward. I have Unibody MBP 2010. What you will need: Phillips screwdriver, elastic eraser, some paper napkin or something like that. Also a small hex screwdriver, however I could never find such a small hex screwdriver to twist those HDD mounting screws.
1. Unscrew the back panel of your MBP (Make sure you switch it Off and unplug power cord before you proceed)!
2. Remove the back cover.
3. Locate the HDD in the lower left corner ( i suppose you have you MBP flipped).
4. If you want you can take our ur HDD and make sure that your mounting screws are well screwed on the sides of the HDD.
5. Put ur HDD back in place make sure it is secured with that special black piece of wood with 2 screws.
6. Now look closely on the gaps between HDD and MBP Case from UP bottom and RIGHT (close to the battery) this is where you need to stuff something into those gaps to makes sure that HDD is well secured in it's position.
Note: Do not put anything from side of SATA Jack
7. I found that eraser is the most suitable material to absorb vibrations. So I had to cut it in pieces in fit it around the HDD.
8. Now you will most likely notice that the gap on the right is very narrow so here you would need something like paper napkin or a tissue, this place in particular was causing vibrations on my MBP 13 2010. I used a small screwdriver to stuff that place with soft material as it is too narrow to be done with hands. Obviously the eraser has to be slightly wider than gaps otherwise ur HDD will keep vibrating.
9. Make sure you screw everything back.
10. Put the back panel in place and screw it firmly in place.

I just got my new 15" i7 MBP yesterday. It has the 7200 RPM option. I've noticed a steady vibration under my right hand/wrist just to the right of the trackpad. This is constant. Its not limited to just those times when the hard drive is spinning. I won't say its enough to be annoying, but it is different. I never noticed this on my older non-unibody MBP but then again that area contained the Superdrive in the past. This feels like either a hard disk spinning or a fan turning, can't tell which.

I just bought my MacBook Pro last week. When I power it up, it makes a loud noise for about a second and a half. I think it's the hard drive starting up or the disc drive. I'm not sure which one, but it's pretty loud, so I was just wondering if anyone else noticed this and if it is normal.

I think this question is a bit ridiculous but that quiet nagging voice in the back of my head won't go away so I'm going to ask anyway. Due to the location of the subwoofer speaker in the 2010 15" MacBook Pro, is it possible that high levels of bass could transfer their vibrations to the hard drive and affect the health of it in any way? Here's what I'm talking about at step 11 on ifixit: [URL]

I recently put an upgraded hard drive in my new aluminum unibody MBP. I replaced the stock 5400rpm drive with a 7200 RPM 320 GB drive - a Western Digital Scorpio Black. I can feel a lot more vibration and I'm just wondering if this is normal. The drive upgrade and subsequent install went fine. It's mounted correctly and tight in the case. Has anyone else done this? Can you feel the vibration on your wrists more when typing? It's not annoying really, but a lot more noticeable. I took it in to the Apple Store recently and a genius commented that it was noticeable, but they don't have much experience with the new MB's and MBP's with 7200rpm drives yet, so he couldn't tell me if it was normal or not.
On another note - I get two ACL errors every time I run disk permissions. They say ACL not expected but found in "Applications" and "Library". They never go away not matter how many times I repair disk permissions. The genius said to ignore it, it's not a problem, and the web says the same thing pretty much. It's still annoying, and repairing permissions can take 5-10 minutes with this new drive.

I just got a new 13" MBP. I noticed that there is slight vibration on the right palm rest. I know that the hard disk is located under there but is this normal? Do any of you 13" MBP owners with stock 5400rpm drive feel the subtle vibration in your MBPs?

I am a proud owner of an Apple Macbook Pro 15 inch since Feb 2009. I am a converted user from PC to MAC and preach the benefits of Apple OS X et al to colleagues, friends and family. This morning I noticed some slight peeling on the bottom right side (near trackpad) of my Macbook Pro. At first I did not realise what it was, I thought it might be some surface marking / dust. I wiped the area with a dry cloth at which point a small part of the surface came away. Here is a link showing images that I have just taken. Need some constructive advice from the forum on what to do?

I bought this computer (Macbook Aluminum 2.4 GHz - currently running Snow Leopard) last October - my warranty ends Oct. 16th. Anyways, I put a disc in the drive earlier today, and the computer took it right away. That was unusual because half the time it doesn't wanna take the disc (someone at the genius bar assured me all of these Aluminum Macbooks are this way). So continuing with my story, I took the disc out when I was done and I heard slight clicking noises coming from the side where you put discs in. I closed the computer because I thought it would stop it, reopened it, and it was still doing it. So then I restarted it, and I didn't hear it. Now I'm hearing it every so often.

I just got my first mac and its a MacBook Pro 15" i7 HR-AG and wanted to protect it and so I purchased a Zagg Invisishield for it. I also paid $20 for the installation ontop of the purchase to get it professionally installed...as I was looking into the details I noticed that the pieces are not properly cut out for the MBP 15" and are off leaving the edges unprotected from scratches. Disappointing because the edges will be most prone to scratches. Here are some pictures of my New MBP and Zagg Invisishield installed....
Also Zagg Invisishield owners is your cut out a little off too or did I end up with a bad one?

I have a 28" inch display attached to newest version of Air. Works ok except when I have a full screen on plain dark grey background, then I see a waviness or flickering effect. Like the dark grey in Iphoto background. Other than this, the other colors seems ok. Pictures are fine, even when dark. Maybe there's a slight flickering with dark blue. Any explanations for this.
using mini display port to dvi. Tried with a friends dual link display, was a little different, but still unstable looking in dark grey when it fills the screen.
Could it be just what it takes to make this color, or the Hertz, which is 60. Other than this, no problem with the screen.

I just bought a refurbished Macbook Pro and after less than a week, I've just started detecting a sort of soft clicking noise when my palms make soft contact with the area near the trackpad. It's not the trackpad clicking, which is a distinct noise.

My machine is Macbook Pro 15" Hi-res glossy core i7 which I just purchased from the apple online store about 2 months. Now my problem is everytime I open a DVD with DVD player, the frame rate is very low (when people move, it's not that clear but when the background moves, it's very obvious) (To see the picture, you can imagine that it's like watching VDOs on youtube, but it's not that bad.) However, the resolution of the DVD is the same. I've tried to open the same DVD with VLC player and it's perfect, so I don't think it's something to do with hardware.

Mine is bulging out at the bottom of the screen, right by that area that gets burning hot when you are plugged in or are on the 9600m gt--right where is says "Macbook Pro".
I noticed that the hinge started to develop a creaking sound when I opened and closed the lid. So I investigated to see if there were any cracks in the hinge. What I found was that if you look at the space between the bezel and the screen, there is a slight (very slight) bulge right by the wording "Macbook pro". If you press down on it, it moves--unlike the rest of the bezel.
Anyone else notice this? I am pretty sure it is caused by the heat in that area. That is a really poor design.

I recently changed the iTunes Media Folder default location to a different area on my drive. I waited a couple minutes and the files did not move. I was unaware you had to go into your settings and also select to consolodate files. Since the files didn't move I reselected my default location and kept trying to go back and forth a couple times. After letting it sit for a couple more minutes I noticed over 200 GB's of files were missing. I looked in each folder I tried to change the default Media Folder location to but they were not in either of them. I have also ran multiple system file recover programs and been unable to find them.
