MacBook Pro :: Plugging In External Firewire Audio Interface Raises Temp?

May 12, 2010

Today I connected my Mackie Onyx Satellite Firewire audio interface to my 2.4 Ghz 13" Macbook Pro for the first time. After it had been running for a while, I looked at iStat Pro, and it reported a CPU temperature of 67C, which is about 15 to 25 degrees hotter than this machine usually idles. Now I've looked around a little bit and found that it's a known issue and associated with the Agere Firewire chipsets. Is there any solution for this? Does it make a difference if you use a daisy chain setup with an external hard drive in between the computer and the audio interface, or a repeater cable, or anything of that nature?

IMac :: High-pitched Frequency With External Speakers / Connected Via Firewire Audio Interface

Apr 14, 2004

I hope I'm not double posting. Have any of the other new iMac owners experienced weird frequencies coming from external speakers that are connected to their iMacs?

For example: I have a set of studio monitors that are hooked up to my iMac using a firewire audio interface. Whenever I'm copying data I get an extremely high-pitched frequency coming from my speakers that sounds like my hard drive spinning. Also, whenever I'm scrolling or moving the magic mouse I get a loud buzzing coming from the speakers (especially when scrolling). None of this stuff happened with my previous 20" iMac C2D. I have experienced this issue with all three of the 27" iMacs that I have gone through thus far (due to the yellow tint issue). Does this sound like something I'm just going to have to live with. All of these high pitched frequencies are driving me batty!

MacBook Pro :: FireWire Port Not Able To Work With Audio Interface

Dec 28, 2010

I'm wondering if I somehow have a bad firewire chip in my MBP. It hasn't been able to work with firewire audio interfaces.

- I tried a Metric Halo ULN 2 which loses sync with it's audio. It will be fine for a few minutes with itunes but then becomes distorted and ringy as if it's lost it's audio sync.
- Random kernel panics while using Logic 9, Garageband 11 with an Apogee Duet - all software fully updated. One time it froze while not doing anything - logic was simply open and sitting there. Using iTunes through the Duet seems fine.
- Pops and crackles using Presonus Firestudio.

I've tried wiping my software and reinstalling everything. I'm using a MBP 5,3 2.8Ghz Core 2 Duo 4GB RAM, Snow Leopard (10.6.5) with the latest updates. I'm going to try an Apogee One which is USB, but I'd really like to use a firewire interface. If there's something wrong with my firewire port, I'd like it taken care of. My machine is under applecare 3 year warranty. I don't think this is an easy thing to prove though.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Firewire Audio Interface + Kanex XD?

Jun 7, 2012

I have, since a couple of years ago, used a nice little gadget called Kanex XD. It is simply an HDMI to Mini Display port, which allows me to play Xbox 360 on my iMac 27 ". It has always been clear as a bell!

When I decided to buy the thing, I was not sure if it would work with my current sound system. But it did! I run all the audio from my mac through a firewire audio interface called Focusrite LS 56 (from the audio interface I have Yamaha HS80M, info for geeks like me).

The audio has functioned really well through my Focusrite. But when I updated to the latest OSX (10.7.4), the audio from my Xbox only plays through my internal speakers. Otherwise, the sound works as usual. It's only when I play my Xbox through my Kanex XD, the audio goes through the internal speakers.

I guess it's something that happened in the new update that makes it impossible to play the sound from my Xbox through my audio interface. I contacted the Kanex XD support. They said that there's nothing they can do and that it probably have something to do with the update.

Windows :: Firewire Audio Interface Motu Has Options Under XP

Dec 13, 2006

I successfully installed XP via Bootcamp and my XP audio software Sampitude. I did also install the MOTU traveler using newest drivers. However, it does not comply perfectly. I was installed alright, but when using it, it doesn't work properly. MME seems to work, but doesn't. ASIO doesn't work at all.
Basically it crashes the program, but if you just unplug it, everything works fine again, using the internal audio.

OS X :: Use Keyboard Volume Button And External Audio Interface?

Aug 19, 2010

I have an Audiobox USB audiointerface with KRKROKIT5 speakers and must turn up or down the volume on the interface. the Keyboard button wont work.

But my father uses Bose speakers but can do both! However, he does not use an audio interface.

Can I get my imac to do both? And if so, is this a good idea with such good speakers? Is the keyboard just turning it up digitally?

I only ask because it can be annoying reaching up over the speaker to turn the nob instead of just hitting a button on the keyboard.

Mac Pro :: Pitched Noise Coming From System / Connected To External Audio Interface?

Jan 6, 2011

just got happy about the fix for the audio / performance problem of the 09 mac pro's. Why should it be different, the next problem knocks at my door, hallelujah...

When I connect my external audio interface (apogee ensemble) to my mac pro, the mac begins to whistle...

As soon as I turn off my interface again, the whistle is away immediately . The sound is definitively coming from my mac pro and I couldn't locate the problem to a fan. I think it's maybe the firewire controller chip? When I connect my external lacie HD I have no problems at all. I have tried it on both ports on the back side with no success.

The whistle is not constantly on the same noise level. Sometimes it's away for a few seconds, it's high pitched and really annoying though. It does not matter if I playback audio or not. Nothing worked though. I experienced the whistle in the past few months sometimes but it was mostly just for a few minutes or so. But in the past few days it was constantly and it never really stopped. This drives me crazy when I have no audio playing and my room is silent !!

I have no other firewire cable (400 to 800) around to test it. Could this be the culprit also?

MacBook Pro :: Audio Latency When Plugging In Headphones?

Jan 2, 2010

I have an issue that happens with my Macbook Pro. In certain applications, if I plug in my headphones - or unplug them, switching to speaker - from that point on the rest of the audio that the application outputs is delayed by about half-a-second. Now I could be talking-out-of-my-ass here, but this seems to *only* happen with applications that would be accessing the audio hardware through a more basic layer than the standard CoreAudio methods. For instance, it occurs in REAPER and Parallels, but not in Quicktime or iTunes. I find that if it does happen, if I can get the application to close the hardware and reopen it this fixes it. For instance, in Parallels I switch to a dummy output and then back, and it's fixed.

Hardware :: Won't Work With External Firewire Audio Device

Jun 25, 2009

Yesterday I took delivery of the following kit- http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/produc...firewire-.html

As you can see, it comes with the FCA202 Audio interface - http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/produc...io-fca202.html

I opted for the FireWire package as it has the most better quality mics. I got it all hooked up, but for some reason, my Mac is not recognising my new sound device at all. I was looking under the Sound part of the Control Panel, but nothing new would register. I checked the FireWire part of the Device Manager (appologies I forget the actual name of the application). The Firewire device was listed as "Unknown", if I was to remove the device and refresh, it would show nothing. So i've got the feeling that its been seen, just not recognised correctly.

I tried a few things to try and help my situation.

1) Disconnecting any other attached device
2) Rebooting several times
3) Leaving system off and unplugged for 10-15 mins
4) Updating all software
5) Resetting my xxxx (I forget the term, but it involved rebooting holding CMD, Option, R and P) - can someone confirm how I know if this was actually reset?
6) Going into Activity Manager and confirming the Audio driver is loaded

From what I've read, Firewire config issues can be common with Macs. I am running an 18 month olf iMac 20" with 4 gig ram. I've not used my FireWire port for a while, about 6 months ago I used a FW external HD which didn't have any problems with. Alas I don't have any other FW devices to plug in and test the port. The final thing I'm going for is to leave the system unplugged for 10 hours, which will be ready to check after work.

One thing I was thinking about though - would getting a powered FW hub be of use at all?

OS X :: 10.6 Not Working Well With USB Audio Interface

Oct 2, 2009

When I'm at home, I usually use an E-MU 0404 USB audio interface to channel sounds from my MBP. The problem is that every time I turn on the interface, the sound is distorted and corrupt. It is not a problem with the hardware; my monitors and interface work properly. The only workaround is to restart the computer with the interface connected and on, which clears up the sound. However, this is very inconvenient to do every time and I think that it's most likely due to a sound driver issue.

There seems to be a headphone level control on the left which sort of works (its continuous so you never know where you are in its range) and a "Level Controller" on the right which doesn't do anything to the sound yet it controls the sound bar in Sys Prefs/Sound. I downloaded the 10.4.11 driver from M-Audio.

Intel Mac :: Audio Interface Just Stops Showing Up

May 23, 2012

I've own an apogee duet for that last year, and have had zero problems. I just got the ensemble the other day for recording drums. I followed the install instruction carefully, updated all software, and firmware. And the interface wont show up in my system preferrences (the ensemble and the duet).

I swapped the firewire cables and still nothing shows up. I plugged the ensemble into my friends lab top, and it see's it right away.

So I thought maybe my firewire port isn't working...But when I go to the apple menu, and then "About this Mac" and hit "more info", "system report" under the Hardware tab at firewire... it says the ensemble is plugged in?

OS X Yosemite :: Mac Not Recognizing Mixer / Audio Interface

Nov 30, 2014

I can’t record an audio (vocal) track.  Here is my gear, DAW: Reason 8, Mac running Yosemite (version 10.10), mixer: Behringer 1204 USB (with built audio interface).  I’ve also tried the following stand alone audio interfaces, TASCAM US 100 and M-Audio Fast track Pro.  Key board Axiom 25.  I gone into preferences and selected USB Audio CODEC for both output and input on the MAC, did the same under reason preference audio tab.  when I create a audio track in Reason, in the audio input section I see “No audio input”.

When I select the drop down menu there is a section for Mono input and Stereo for me to check this is followed by a grayed out section that states “No audio input available, please check your sound card settings. The other funny thing is when I use Garage Band, I have no issues recording.  I just recorded in garage band using the Behringer 1204.  Am I missing some simple setting somewhere, missing a channel routing.
