I have a bunch of ICONS on my desktop, just recently when I plug external monitor in, they no longer how up on external monitor, however if I open up MBP they show on both monitors. I have a Dell 2407 external monitor. Also every so often I get a lot of squiggle lines showing up on my external monitor.
View 2 RepliesMy external HD won't show up anymore on my desktop nor does it get listed in disc utilities. I tried to cennect it to another mac but it doesn't show there either nor in that mac's disc utility. I happened to re-start the computer while the hd was connected and now it doesn't show up anymore. I use it for back-up via Time machine. I could re-format and do the back up all over again but then I need to find it first.

I have virtual dj on my system and I am trying to set up a karaoke system. The one problem I am having is when I hook up the vga to the mini dvi converter and the other end to my TV monitor. What is showing on my TV monitor is an echo of what is showing on my computer screen and not what is showing in the video window (which are the words to the song that is playing). I was told that I need to have the desktop extended and that would separate what is showing on the computer screen and the small window with the words.

I recently RE-Imaged my MacBook Air because of other software issues. Well that fixed those problems, now I am having other problems! When I plug a Pendrive, or my External HD into the MBA it doesn't appear on the desktop but it does show up in the Finder Window.

I've just brought a new external Hard drive for my mac book pro and when I put the usb cable into the laptop nothing showed up on the desktop. I waited a few minutes but nothing happen and then I turned off the computer and did it again.

I know this is an elementary question, but I do not want to delete all of my pictures, music, etc after I put them on my external hard drive and come to find out that I can never get them back.

I have a broken screen on my MacBook air and have an external screen attached via thundbolt and hdmi connection when I boot up the unit it only shows second screen on external no dock or desktop so can not see system preferences or anything, need to find a way so then when I boot up system the external automatically comes the default screen

Sometimes my external HD doesn't appear on my desktop (connected with Firewire).It spins up, and all I generally have to do is turn it off and turn it back on again for it to appear.But obviously I wish it would just work the first time.Using 10.6.1 on a Mac Pro, external drive is OWC Mercury.

The drive appears on the Finder Sidebar but how do I get the icon to appear on the desktop, same principle as an alias I guess.

When I boot up, my external drives are not on the desktop. I discovered that if the Finder is relaunched, they show up and all is well. Another issue that may be related: When powering down, the computer needs a force-quit most of the time. It hangs on the spinning gear

It's not an issue as such, more of an annoyance (when trying to keep things tidy and organised) but on all 3 of my external HDD's a folder 'Desktop' keeps appearing. It's empty on all drives.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy external drive has been used once. It was formatted, partitioned and files were saved on a mac. It showed up on a friends computer running Linux, and it showed up on my PC at home, but it hasn't been turned on since (about two weeks). This is where the problems begin. A few days ago I purchased a new enclosure for my HD (Nexstar 3.5). I took the HD out of it's old enclosure and put it in the new one (I needed the new enclosure for school purposes). I got to school today and plugged it in to the mac, but the drive didn't show up on the desktop. I tried to connect with Firewire 400, 800 and USB 2.0 but no luck with any of them (a USB key worked fine). Just to make sure it was working, I got home plugged it in to my PC and it showed up instantly.
From looking at other threads regarding this issue they all say I have to access the Utility menu. The only problem is since the mac I need to use is a school computer I can't access the Utility menu. It says I don't have authorization to use that menu, and won't allow me to go any further.
I don't know what to do from here. I can't reformat the drive because there is rather important info on there that hasn't been backed up yet. What can I do?
Can anyone recommend a good Mac friendly external HDD.. I am thinking around 1TB. I want to hook it up to my Mini and store my itunes library on it.. also use it as backup for photos etc..
View 1 Replies View RelatedRunning OSX 10.4.1 on an eMac; suddenly my external drive (firewire) doesn't appear on the desktop or in the finder--but it IS in Disk Utility, which says it is mounted and does not need repair. Whenever I power it off, I get an error message about having to eject it first (which I can't do because I can't see/access it). But I need it to back up/move files, esp. w/a main HD of only 80G. Found an article that said I should run following AppleScript; did so twice, got below error twice.

This may a well beaten subject, but I must get an answer.
I have used an Iomega External HD (black series/800/firewire) for about 6 months, using it to load up with important files.
Now all of a sudden, it does get recognized by either my Mac G5 (OS X 10.4) or my MacBook Pro. In fact, I get the Disk Insertion (initialize/ignore/eject) window.
Why initialize, that will only wipe out all of my files on the HD.
i woke up this morning and my western digital external HDD icon is not showing up on the desktop. I currently use this as a time machine and it has been working for about a year. This has happened before and just a simple re-plug of the usb does the trick, but i have been working on this for hours and for some reason it is not showing up. I have unplugged everything and re plugged them back in and nothing is working. i have checked the disk utility and the disk utility recognizes it. but i still dont know why it doesn't have an icon. i am running a repair disk on the external HDD now and it and it has been "repairing" for about 30 min now. i have tried to backup but it is not working either.
I got my mac pro in england and right now I am in denmark sitting here with my macbook pro trying to control it. I setup Logmein client before I left which is working fine but the lag is annoying me, and I was wondering if there was a better solution so, I enabled "remote desktop" on my macpro and sitting here with apples Remote desktop trying to connect to the IP of my place in england (not the internal, the proper external) and as usual I can see I can connect to it, as its a public "student" residential area, I know I cant access the router but I also know they have not blocked any ports including the 5900 port which is required.
So is it my "DNS" which is blundering? Coz I can see when I make the remote desktop under the sharing tab, does it not create a dns "submask" - and if thats true. When I put that in to DNS I still cant connect any fancy or fantastic solutions? I don't mind a browser based client such has logmein, but one with a more "fluent" use would be wonderful, as i wanted to work on it live.

I did a powerpoint presentation using my MBP (late 2008, OSX 10.6.2 updated yesterday) and a Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter. Afterwards, I unplugged the projector, then the adapter and closed the screen without looking.
When I opened the screen, surprise!:
- desktop is empty: background image is visible, but all files & folders are gone
- all running applications are still functioning properly
- clicking on the desktop or dragging a file to the desktop does nothing
- content of desktop is accessible through Finder
- there are no other usernames in the HD>Users folder
I have not tried a reboot, because I heard of similar symptoms (without the mini DisplayPort) being related to username issues and people loosing all their data as a result.
How do I stop my external HD from mirroring my iMac. I copy items to my external HD, then delete them from my desktop, then it disappears from my external HD.

Cos the thing is that my Mac's hard drive got corrupted for whatever reason I don't know so I had to re-install my OS (Lion). Now the thing is that unlike before if I connected my phone, flash drive or wanted to install a new applicatiion it would appear on my desktop as an icon, now it doesn't.Â

I had a black screen of death moment and since then, I've had a few weird anomalies with my iMac. I ran disk repair while logged in, and it told me there was a problem. I restarted in restore mode, and when I repaired the drive, it found no problems. I don't believe it.Â
1. My external hard drives do not appear on the desktop. They are mounted, and I can see them when I open the finder and the disk utility, but they won't show up on the desktop like they used to. I have played with finder preferences shutting the option to see them off and on, but this doesn't change anything. Very strnage.Â
2. iTunes completely whacked out. It "restored" itself by magic. Now all the Date Added dates are March 23rd. All of my podcasts disappeared, and all my settings were reset. I have no idea what else I lost. I want to restore from a back up, but I don't know how to do just my iTunes.
